Rocks and Minerals
(Adapted from: Geology and Geological Features: A Photographic Slide Collection compiled by B.F. Kean, 1993) Minerals are naturally formed crystals that are composed of one or more chemical elements. They are distinguished from other natural solid materials by their crystalline structure. Some natural solid materials formed in rocks are not minerals because they lack a crystalline structure, i.e., they are amorphous, eg., obsidian or volcanic glass. Most minerals are formed by inorganic processes; however, a few are formed by organic processes (living organisms), eg., calcite in coral. Single-element minerals include diamond (from carbon) and the native (i.e., elemental) metals gold, copper and silver. Other minerals, such as chalcopyrite, sphalerite and mica, are chemical compounds consisting of several elements. Rocks are made up of minerals, the exception being glassy rocks (eg., some rhyolites). Most rocks are polymineralic (i.e., contain more than one mineral); however, a few are monomineralic, eg., limestone and marble. Rock-forming processes, some rapid and others requiring millions of years, are as active today as in the geological past.

Gwyn's Lecture Notes for LAB #1 (Minerals) - Geology 101, Winter 2000 What is a mineral = naturally occurring (so, human-made materials are not minerals) = inorganic , almost always (so coal is not a mineral) = solid / crystallized (so gases and liquids are not minerals) = definite chemical formula (it's made up of chemical elements in specific proportions [range]; polymorphs are 2 minerals with same chemical composition, but different crystal structureseg, diamond and graphite [pencil lead].) = orderly internal crystal structure (its atoms are arranged in a systematic, repeating pattern so obsidian [volcanic glass], which is amorphous, is a mineraloid, not a mineral) An example of a mineral: Table salt! = mineral name is halite, chemical name is sodium chloride, chemical formula is NaCl = an evaporite = not organic = solid = NaCl = isometric crystal system (and forms cubes-look with magnifier) What is a rock = Naturally occurring combination (aggregate) of one or more minerals * Each mineral retains certain characteristics (eg, the rock granite = quartz + feldspars + certain other minerals) It's really, really important to remember the differences between MINERALS and ROCKS!!!

http://geology.csupomona.edu/drjessey/class/GSC425/Ig-Met1.html
Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology - Lecture 1 Texture - Shape and appearance of constituent mineral grains Phaneritic - Igneous rock texture in which the mineral grains are sufficiently large to be identifiable with a hand lens or binocular microscope. Generally expected texture of plutonic rock body that has undergone a protracted period of cooling. Further subdivide texture based on the relative size of the mineral grains:
  • Medium (1-5mm) Coarse (5mm-3cm)
Aphanitic - Mineral grains too small to be identified with a hand lens. Results from rapid cooling at or near the earth's surface. Glassy - Consists of glass matrix. May contain phenocrysts of actual minerals. Results from very rapid cooling, so rapid that atoms do not have the opportunity to assume an ordered arrangement. Metastable and with time glasses will crystallize (devitrify). Clastic (volcaniclastic) - Consists of broken or abraded fragments cemented by later material. Commonly associated with explosive volcanic eruptions. Epiclastic - Produced by subaerial weathering, erosion and deposition of rock debris. Equigranular - Consisting of grains of more or less equal size Inequigranular - Conspicuous difference in grain sizes
  • Porphyritic - Essentially the same as inequigranular Phenocrysts - larger grains Groundmass (matrix) - finer grained material
Other Terms Holocrystalline - Composed entirely of crystals Holohyaline - Composed entirely of glass Hypocrystalline - Mixture of each Grain Shape - Fabric
  • Euhedral - Grains bounded by well defined crystal faces

PAGE 7 OF 7 THE WORLD OF DIAMONDS – The Inside Story of the Miners, Cutters, Smugglers, Lovers, and Investors, by Timothy Green, 9 1/2 X 6 1/4, 300 pages, hard cover. A double page size map is included, showing the main Diamond mining areas, cutting centers, and markets on a worldwide basis. This book is the first inside story of the international Diamond business. Timothy Green’s approach is very much as a journalist, not as a gemologist, as he traces the intricate network of this fraternity to discover who mines, who markets, who smuggles, and who buys Diamonds today. The author traveled over 50,000 miles in researching this book, from London to Tokyo, from Kimberley, South Africa to Rio de Janeiro, from Antwerp to Tel Aviv and Bombay. Chapters include the Diamond in history, mining in different countries from Australia to Zaire and everywhere in between (as illustrated on the map included in the book).

PAGE 5 OF 7 MINERALOGY FOR AMATEURS , By John Sinkankas, 10 1/4 X 7 3/4, 585 pages, cloth bound. This is the original hard cover edition of Sinkankas’ classic on mineralogy. After a few printings, the original name was shortened to Mineralogy. Over 250 minerals are covered in this authoritative volume, long considered to be the most popular reference for anyone who wishes to gain a basic knowledge of minerals. A description of each species includes its distinctive features, and the simplest and most direct methods one can employ to identify unknowns. Instructions for home-made testing devices are included, and devices used in optical mineralogy are described. The appendices include tables to expedite the identification of specimens, and a bibliography is included for further reading and study. Over 136 photographs, and 191 line drawings of crystal forms closely supplement the text.
