Antarctic Waves Antarctic Waves is a new music making toolkit for key stage 3, GCSE, and A level students (and equivalent UK qualifications) which uses real science, images and sounds from the Antarctic to inspire musical composition. It has been developed by the British Antarctic Survey, and creative multimedia company Braunarts. Braunarts have developed unique software that enables students to hear and musically manipulate the data from the Antarctic. The Web Site contains three main areas: the Virtual tour of the 'sights and sounds' of the Antarctic; Making music, an interactive section using bespoke sounds and which includes detailed 'Composing Guides', and Connections, a history of the production. Antarctic Waves has been made possible by an Education award from Nesta, and it is also a Science Year supported project. Science - Study and teaching - Aids and devices Music and science Dramatic science: learning to love the grey and making astronauts Dramatic science, a BBC/Open University project, provides details on two contemporary, ground breaking dramas tackling two of the most controversial scientific topics of the day - cloning and genetic selection. "Learning to love the grey" is a love story that brings into "sharp focus the social, ethical and moral issues emerging from current developments in cloning technology"; whilst "Making astronauts" is a drama that delves into the lives of two prospective parents who consider using the latest scientific developments to genetically select their child. The web site explores the science behind the dramas with accompanying views of expert panels. There is also an online debate where views can be given on the moral and ethical dilemmas.

Contemporary Performing Arts in Norway
The Development of innovative scenic art in Norway
by Knut Ove Arntzen
Knut Ove Arntzen is associate professor at the Section for Theatre Research, University of Bergen There were a number of circumstances that laid the foundation for the artistically creative project theatre in Norway that aroused a certain amount of international interest. During the 1980s Norway established contact with the new international trends within the visually-oriented project theatre. Guest appearances at the Oslo International Theatre Festival, and later the Black Box Theatre, Bergen Internasjonale Teater and BIT Teatergarasjen, were very important in this area. During the 1980s the idea of project theatre became a driving force in Norwegian theatre, performance art and dance. The independent theatre groups had got off to a slow start in the 1970s, and had not managed to keep developing sufficiently. This naturally had consequences for those aspects of theatre policy that applied to non-institutional theatre. Two main points of view emerged in the debate on this subject: there were those who favoured an internationally-oriented project theatre linked with new forms of dramaturgy, and those who favoured promoting a locally-based regional theatre with extensive cooperation between amateurs and professionals.

Dance develops both form and grace.
Apple Tree Theatre Company is the newest activity of the Performing Arts Workshop. Our first production, 'Finian's Rainbow", was seen by over 2,000 people and was well received in the community. Apple Tree's open auditions offer our students and others performance opportunities in a broader, more professional setting. Apple Tree Theatre Company provides quality family theatre for the entire community! The Performing Arts Workshop staff serves as a resource personnel in the arts to local community groups, park districts, and school systems, presenting in-service consultation and workshop programs for teachers and students. We also serve as a consulting theatrical production team and can provide original scripts, music, choreography, musical arrangements or staging assistance for community theatre and school musical productions. Students come to us for a variety of reasons . . . Some wish to become the "triple threat" of the theatre: one who has mastered all the skills—acting, singing and dancing! Some want simply to gain the confidence to participate in various projects with their peers, while others want to be in a creative and spontaneous activity that is fun!

While some may view poetry and mime as art forms that ought never be combined, the Spelunkers disagree: If mime is the movement art that most deals with symbols and concrete images it is also most immediately open the metaphor and allegory of poetry. Slapstick my give way to Burroughsian “cut-ups” to dance to formal verse.
Cosmic Spelunker Theater has been presenting its fusion of spoken word and movement since 2002, appearing at Mobius (Boston, MA), Out of the Blue Gallery, and Zeitgeist Gallery (Cambridge, MA), Artists At Large (Hyde Park, MA), The Revolving Museum (Lowell, MA), Warwick Museum of Art (Warwick, RI), and Bowery Poetry Club (New York, NY.)
James Van Looy is not much of a self promoter due to his role as Minister of Silence for the Corporeal Liberation Movement. He has been a fixture in Boston’s poetry venues since the 1970s and performed with the Mirage Mime Theater (a troupe comprised mostly of Decroux’ students) from 1980 to 1987 during which time he was also taught classes offered by Mirage. From 1987 to 1988 he performed as part of the Collective Mime. He has run poetry workshops for Boston area homeless people at Pine Street Inn and St. Francis House since 1992 and regularly reads at Bay State Prison as part of their poetry program. He is a former board member of Stone Soup Poets. Currently, Van Looy leads the Labyrinth Creative Movement Workshop. He is very tall.

Mel Gibson patron of New York-based performing arts charity; Chair Anna Murdoch-Mann to host debut event New York, NY, April 20, 2004: On April 27, Friends of NIDA in America, with Patron Mel Gibson and Chair Anna Murdoch-Mann, pulls back the curtains to start its work in the US.
NIDA is the National Institute for Dramatic Arts in Sydney, Australia, with Oscar-winning graduates Mel Gibson, Cate Blanchett, Judy Davis; Director Baz Luhrmann; Producer Ben Gannon, and a host of other internationally acclaimed talent.
Friends of NIDA in America debuts with Stolen – a portrayal by Aboriginal Australian performing artists telling their stories, and those of their ancestors.
“I want talented artists from many cultures to be able to tell their stories,” explained Gibson. “Bringing Aboriginal artists to a New York City audience is just such a great way to start doing that.
“Australians have a powerful style of expression in drama,” he said. “A lot of it comes from what so many of us learned at NIDA. I think it can help bring different cultures closer together.”

Manuscript Collections - Performing Arts
Skip To Performing Arts Collection List
From 19th century American vaudeville to 20th century British experimental theatre, materials in the performing arts category form research collection emphasizing stage productions. The personal papers of theatrical personalities and the archives of theatre groups and agencies are collected, as well as ephemeral and promotional materials. Collections reflecting experimental theatre's challenges to convention range from the Ballantine papers, chronicling the development of the Provincetown Players in the early 20th century, to the archives of the Living Theatre, whose purpose was to advocate anarchy and radical social change beginning in the 1950's. Other theatre groups and collectives focus on alternative theatrical methods: the archives of the Bread and Puppet Theatre, for example, show their efforts at communicating through puppets and realia, rather than verbal dialog, and the Firehouse Theatre archives was interested in new staging techniques. The Joint Stock Theatre Group archives show the efforts made towards "new" writing, and in the powerful collaboration between playwright, director, and actors. Radical political commentary is reflected in the collections of the San Francisco Mime Troupe and the Squat Theatre, whose productions were powerful enough to force their exile from Hungary. Theatrical agents' archives provide a wealth of research potential. Arthur Bertram was a theatrical agent and business manager for theatres, touring companies, and individual actors. His clients included Mrs. Patrick Campbell, Marie Tempest, and Henry Irving. Toby Cole operated as a theatrical-literary agent in New York City, representing such notables as Saul Bellow, Zero Mostel, and Sam Shepard. The Universal Movement Theatre Repertory was the only booking agency for experimental theatre groups in the United States and Europe.

S. African band to perform in India after World Cup

After performing at the grand opening of cricket’s World Cup in Cape Town in February, the hugely popular South African music and dance group African Footprint will be performing in India. Famous for its unique brand of explosive blend of song and dance, the group, which takes the audience on a pulsating journey of inspiration as the artists stomp, jump, tap, jive and sing to the beats of Africa, will be one of the main attractions at the World Cup opening on Feb. 8. Widely considered symbolic of the resurgent South Africa, African Footprint combines haunting pennywhistle and fuses the rhythms of ancient Africa with high energy Afro-fusion and dance, melding contemporary jazz, tap, tribal traditional gumboot and the uniquely South African breed of hip hop- pantsula. Besides New Delhi (March 3 and 4), African Footprint will perform in Mumbai (March 5 and 6) and Hyderabad (March 7 and 8).
