Camp Nelson was a very large Union Army base which was in operation from 1863 to 1865. It was located about five miles south of the town of Nicholasville, Ky., and served several major functions.
  • It was a recruit training camp for newly mustered in regiments.
  • It was a major supply head, receiving stores by rail and then sending them to armies in the field by wagon train. It was the major supply depot for armies operating in central and southern Kentucky, eastern Tennessee, and western Virginia.
  • It was a major medical facility, receiving sick and wounded transported from the field.
  • It was a strongly armed fort, and served as both a defensive anchor against potential attack into Kentucky (it was, in fact, established as a response to Bragg's invasion of Kentucky in 1862) and as a base of military operations sending troops into the field on military actions.
  • It contained a large African-American "refugee" camp consisting mostly of families of black soldiers who came with them when the mustered into the army.

US Army In the early days of the University, circa 1820, while Thomas Jefferson was still Rector, a voluntary military company existed. However, it was disbanded some years later on its unwillingness to submit to certain regulations of the faculty, who held a firm grasp over University policy at the time. The dispute was over the issue of weapon keeping. The student-cadets wished to keep arms in their Lawn rooms on the Academical Village . Faculty members refused this request, demanding that weapons be kept in a separate armory. Without a compromise, the company fell idle for some 30 years. Upon the secession of South Carolina on December 20, 1860, two military companies were again formed at the University, this during the second session of 1860-1861. Students from the Virginia Military Institute traveled to Charlottesville to form and train the companies. Though Virginia had not yet declared itself seceded from the Union, there was and air of trepidation among the primarily southern student body. These two companies consisted of about 100 students each and called themselves the "Southern Guard," and the "Sons of Liberty," an obvious reference to rebellious group led by Samuel Adams prior to the Revolutionary War.

Representing the Union Army of the period are several units that are recreations of actual Civil War military organizations. These include representative units from the artillery, infantry and cavalry, as well as the support systems such as the U.S. Medical Department. The Infantry was the mainstay of the Army during the War, the "Queen of Battle." It represented the bulk of the troops that engaged in fighting. Most of the soldiers in the field during the Civil War belonged to infantry units organized under the auspices of the state volunteers. In the NCWA, the Union Brigade infantry is represented by several units:

MISSOURI VOLUNTEER FORCES IN THE CIVIL WAR with Federal Service (UNION) The total number of men who served from Missouri on the side of the Union was approxiamately 110,000 and 90,000 on the side of the Confederacy but the total number will never be known for sure. The following list of Union Forces from Missouri has been generated by the Missouri Commandery of MOLLUS from Frederick H. Dyer's "A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion, V.III" and includes 445 Union troops. This three volume set can be found in many libraries. The Missouri Commandery will be working to get the unit histories on-line as well but this may take some time. Currently there are only a very few number of either Union or Confederate unit histories from Missouri units. We plan on working with our Confederate counterparts to have a similar list developed for the Confederate Forces from Missouri. For further information please contact us at momollus@mail.usmo.com or write THE MISSOURI COMMANDERY OF MOLLUS, 302 W. Springfield Ave., Union, MO 63084. Light Horse Military Units
HISTORY OF 10TH LIGHT HORSE REGIMENT
The first of the mounted units in Western Australia to be officially formed was the Pinjarra Mounted Volunteers raised in October 1862. Other volunteer units followed between 1870 and 1897 under such titles as Union Troop of Western Australian Mounted Volunteers, The Wellington Mounted Volunteers and The Perth Mounted Rifle Volunteers. However these were short lived and by 1897 all had been disbanded.
On 7th June, 1900 orders were given to raise the Western Australian Mounted Infantry. By 1901 this was completed and it is in this Volunteer Cavalry Regiment that A Sqn 10th Light Horse Regiment has its origin.
During the South African War 1899-1902 the colony of Western Australia raised and sent nine contingents (six Western Australian Mounted Infantry and three Australian Commonwealth Horse).
With the establishing of Military Districts throughout the Commonwealth a new system of designation was introduced and in 1912 the 18th A.L.H. (W.A.M.I.) became the 25th Light Horse (W.A.M.I.).
At the outbreak of the Great War in 1914 the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) was raised. Initially a mounted unit was not required from Western Australia however approval was given for C Squadron of the 7th Light Horse Regiment to be formed in Western Australia (the balance from Qld and N.S.W.). Interest was so great that it was realised that a complete Regiment could be formed by West Australians and the 10th Light Horse Regiment was established.
