Soviet invasion of Afghanistan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan The Soviet intervention in Afghanistan was a 10-year war which wreaked incredible havoc and destruction on Afghanistan . The 'shooting' war is generally held to have started December 24 . Soviet troops ultimately withdrew from the area between May 15 and February 2 . The Soviet Union officially announced that all of its troops had left Afghanistan on February 15 The war was regarded by many as an unprovoked invasion of a sovereign country by another. The United Nations General Assembly passed United Nations Resolution 37/37 on November 29 , which stated that the Soviet Union forces should withdraw from Afghanistan. However, others supported the Soviet Union , regarding it as coming to the rescue of an impoverished ally, or as a pre-emptive war against Islamist terrorists. The CIA invested US$2.1 billion over a 10-year period to create an anti-Soviet resistance. The ground forces are organized into six [previously eight] military districts, one independent army, and two groups of forces. Although the districts are ground forces commands, they may include forces from the other services, in which case they also serve as regional commands. In February 1996, four of Russia's eight independent airborne brigades were placed under ground forces command, with one each going to the North Caucasus, Siberian, Transbaikal, and Far Eastern districts. At the same time, two of five airborne divisions, stationed at Pskov and Novorossiysk, were assigned for special joint operations to the Northern and Siberian districts, respectively. These shifts, which outside observers interpreted as the end of plans to form a mobile force for rapid insertion in trouble areas, reflected a shortage of the airlift capacity needed to support independent operations by such troops, as well as a possible fear of coup activity in independent elite military units. As of 1996 the ground forces included sixty-nine divisions: seventeen armored, forty-seven motorized infantry, and five airborne. Many of these divisions were "cadre" units, equipped with all the heavy armament of a full-strength motor-rifle or tank division, while having only skeleton personnel strength. The officers and men of a cadre division focused primarily on maintaining the equipment in working condition. During wartime mobilization, such a division should be beefed up to full manpower strength; however, in peacetime a cadre division is unfit for any combat. In late 1996 Defense Minister Igor Rodionov order the disbanding of two of Russia's remaining five airborne divisions.

Finally! Truth about the Kansas Jayhawkers revealed! I have lived in Kansas for over 25 years and have always wondered why the Kansas historians neglect to write about Jennison's Jayhawkers. It is my opinion that the Kansas Historical Museum and the Lecompton Constitutional Hall have hidden the facts about the Jayhawkers for a reason. Their argument is simple: Missouri people were murderous, ruffians and the Kansas people were all innocent and pure. It is no wonder that this book is not sold in either of their museum books stores. This book is an interesting read, well documented and is used as a reference source in fourteen Missouri/Kansas Border War books that I have read. This is your chance to learn the truth about the Jayhawkers. If you are a Kansan it just might change your point of view.

Military Records The United States has always kept records of the people who have served in their military and it is amazing how much genealogical information these records contain. Because these records were created at the time the event happened, military records are considered primary records. Below is a list of wars that the United States has participated in since it became a country for which there are federal records: Revolutionary War, 1775-83 Indian Wars, 1780s-1800

    TSRIFIN MILITARY BASE, Israel
Nestled in a nondescript concrete building on this sprawling military base near Tel Aviv, soldiers have been working on a top-secret project the past few years: a cell phone. The "Mountain Rose" system is a bit more than that, of course: Developed with Motorola, it uses upgraded commercial technology to provide highly secure communications among combat forces, commanders and headquarters. "More secure. More reliable. Those are the key words," says Col. Avi Berger, head of the communications systems department at Lotem, one of a handful of shadowy units that have turned Israel's military into an electronics-warfare powerhouse. These units, whose size in most cases remains classified, have also quietly become incubators for Israel's high-tech industry, much the way that elite fighting units produced generations of political leaders.

    Where to Begin
The best way to begin your search is to play 20 questions with your elderly relatives about what they know of the last several generations. Search the house for images, documents, anything that might give you clues to the past. If you are not familiar with how to research Civil War regiments, I suggest that you find a copy of Tracing Your Civil War Ancestor by Bertram Hawthorne Groene, ISBN:0-345-36192-X. This book is readable and includes much useful information. The National Archive's Civil War Records Tutorial includes a thorough explanation of the kinds of information in their collections. These sources will give you an idea of what information is available and what types of clues to look for. At a minimum there are several pieces of information that you need to begin your search: a name, unit number, place of residence, dates, and date/place of death. You need not have all of these. But the more information you have the easier you search will be. Each of these items can help you locate clues to your ancestor's service. Research Plan
  • Gather as much information as you can from documents, photos, relics, and relatives.

Illinois responded to President Lincoln's first call for troops with the 7th-12th Infantry (as well as Artillery and Cavalry). Regiments were numbered in order of formation, beginning with 7. In respect for 6 Regiments that served from Illinois in the Mexican War, 1 through 6 were not used. Regiments 7-12 were enrolled twice, once for 3 months, then for 3 years. Most of the rest were enrolled for three years, except for 67-71 (for 3 months in mid-1862, primarily for guard duty in Illinois), 132-143 and 145 (in 1863-1864 for 100 day guard duty at forts within Union occupied Confederate territory) and 144 and 146-156 (1 year duty). By August of 1861, Illinois had enrolled men in the 7th through 55th Infantry Regiments. Some men had difficulting getting into Illinois Regiments and joined Regiments from other states. By the end of August 1862, Regiment Numbers through 116 had been or were forming. Just one month later, the number was up to the 129th. By late November 1862, after the harvest season, Illinois had 125 Infantry Regiments, 16 Cavalry, and 30 Artillery batteries. The total was 20,000 men in excess of the Union's requested quota for the State of Illinois
