VOLUME:
11.88 cubic ft. and 34.00 microfilm reels
ARRANGEMENT: Series arranged alphabetically, first by county, then by last name of applicant with pension lists and miscellaneous correspondence filed at the end of each county. In some counties applications from African Americans are also filed at the end of the county. Index access is by arbitrary sequentially assigned number. Act No. 63, 1923 S.C. Acts 107 allowed African Americans who had served at least six months as cooks, servants, or attendants to apply for a pension. Then in 1924, apparently because there were too many applications, the act was amended to eliminate all laborers, teamsters, and non-South Carolinians by extending eligibility only to South Carolina residents who had served the state for at least six months as "body servants or male camp cooks."

US Army In the early days of the University, circa 1820, while Thomas Jefferson was still Rector, a voluntary military company existed. However, it was disbanded some years later on its unwillingness to submit to certain regulations of the faculty, who held a firm grasp over University policy at the time. The dispute was over the issue of weapon keeping. The student-cadets wished to keep arms in their Lawn rooms on the Academical Village . Faculty members refused this request, demanding that weapons be kept in a separate armory. Without a compromise, the company fell idle for some 30 years. Upon the secession of South Carolina on December 20, 1860, two military companies were again formed at the University, this during the second session of 1860-1861. Students from the Virginia Military Institute traveled to Charlottesville to form and train the companies. Though Virginia had not yet declared itself seceded from the Union, there was and air of trepidation among the primarily southern student body. These two companies consisted of about 100 students each and called themselves the "Southern Guard," and the "Sons of Liberty," an obvious reference to rebellious group led by Samuel Adams prior to the Revolutionary War.

Military Records The United States has always kept records of the people who have served in their military and it is amazing how much genealogical information these records contain. Because these records were created at the time the event happened, military records are considered primary records. Below is a list of wars that the United States has participated in since it became a country for which there are federal records: Revolutionary War, 1775-83 Indian Wars, 1780s-1800

I started looking for my Civil War ancestor about 3 years ago. I knew very little about him except that his name was probably James Williams, that he lived somewhere in Georgia, and probably died during the Civil War fighting for the South. After my search, I was able to find out the following information: Who: James Jerrard Williams, Pvt. CSA Enlisted: February 28, 1862 at Ellijay, GA Served with: Co. Military Records
As you research your ancestors back through time, consider their participation in wars. Remember, you are searching for circumstances and events that created records with genealogical value. Military service often creates two kinds of records: service and benefits from having served. The National Archives in Washington, DC, is the largest repository of military records in the United States. An entire microfilm catalog is devoted to military records. Copies of those microfilm publications have been distributed throughout the United States and are available at major libraries with genealogical collections.
A Starting Point
Read a basic United States history text to learn more about the wars in which our country has been involved. Our government began with a war, the American Revolution, 1776-1783. We fought Great Britain again in 1812 and lost many records in a fire in Washington DC, the nation's new capital. In the early 19th century, we fought a series of wars with various Indian tribes. In 1846-1848, we fought a war with Mexico over Texas' entry into the union. The bloodiest of all our wars was the War Between the States or Civil War, fought between 1861 and 1865. We participated in the Spanish-American War in 1898, a war for independence for Cuba and the Philippines. World War I, once called the Great War, involved the United States in 1917 and 1918. 'Modern' wars, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, are within living memory of many Americans.

INTRODUCTION
In 1890, the Tennessee Confederate Soldiers' Home opened on the grounds of the Hermitage Plantation, former residence of Andrew Jackson. The Soldiers' Home provided care and housing for aging confederate veterans who resided in Tennessee. Prior to admission into the facility, these veterans submitted applications to a review board. The applications contain questions designed to determine the applicants need and legitimacy for state funded care. These records are now indexed and available at the Tennessee State Library and Archives. The index is alphabetical by surname, and when available, the applicant's county of residence, military unit, and date of application are included. Most of the index data is taken directly from the applications. However, some forms are incomplete or illegible, and supplemental sources were used to create the index entry. These supplemental sources include the two volumes of Tennesseans in the Civil War and additional materials contained in the applicant’s file such as letters of recommendation and verification.

Nancy Justus Morebeck has just written a new book, called , Published by Heritage Quest. I had a chance to read this new one hundred and fifty-two-page book this week. Morebeck’s book describes the record holdings available at the National Archives, many of which are also available via microfilm rentals at a local Family History Center near you. (You can find the location of your nearest center at: www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp .) The author also lists some other locations of records, including state archives. She describes the types of documents available and tells why they can be valuable to genealogists. She also tells how to order microfilms and photocopies of these documents.
