Colonel Heinl's exhausting research has produced an absorbing account of the Marines history from its inception at Tun Tavern in 1775 through 1962. He has concentrated on the leadership of this elite force, its traditions and battleground experiences. The development of amphibious warfare during WWII is especially interesting as the author tells of the mistakes as well as the successes. There is an on-going theme regarding the plain survival of the Corps for the past 200 years as many critics...

MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY ARMY ROTC:
"ON-LINE WITH THE BEAR BATTALION"
GENERAL INFORMATION
History of ROTC at Morgan State University [top] Reserve Officers' Training Corps was established at Morgan State College in 1948. It is one of four Senior Army ROTC programs in the State of Maryland. Originally designated as a branch oriented program (Infantry), the curriculum was redesigned General Military Science in 1954. Full academic credit is awarded for satisfactory completion of each phase of Military Science; MS I through MS IV. Departmental credit may be used to fulfill overall academic requirements for graduation in all disciplines. During the school year 1972-73, the US Army for the first time authorized enrollment of women in ROTC. Five institutions were selected for a pilot program. Morgan State was not among the five institutions selected, but in the 1973-74 school year the program was opened to women here and four young women enrolled in Military Science. Academic year 1979-80 witnessed the installation of the first female as the Cadet Corps Battalion Commander.

Military Thought
Nov-Dec, 2001 by V.D. Ryabchuk
The article presents its author's vision of the system of military sciences, the role and problems of military science based on his extensive experience. He shows that effective solutions to difficult problems of the nation's military security directly depend on the development level of methodology of scientific research. In recent years the journal's publications have been devoting increased attention to fundamental problems of military science. Suffice it to mention the articles by M.A. Gareev, S.A. Tyushkevich and V.A. Vinogradov (Military Thought, 2000, issues 1, 2, 3, 6; 2001, issues 1 and 2) who published the results of their studies of the fundamental things of military science and its methodology. These studies, the long debate on military science and conferences of the Academy of Military Sciences fit into what is a comparably new area-military science of science. Let us try to see what it is.

As a college elective, the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program provides preparation for leadership in any profession, military or civilian.
Army ROTC Scholarships
The ROTC program offers four-year, three-year and two-year scholarships to qualified students. An Army ROTC scholarship can provide all of the tuition and fees at The University of Toledo. Four-year and three-year advanced designee (A.D.) winners receive free room and board from the University. Three-year A.D. winners also receive free first-year tuition. All Scholarship awards include an allowance for textbooks and supplies and a monthly spending allowance for up to 10 months per year during the scholarship period. Additional locally funded scholarships are available for a limited number of non-scholarship cadets. Students may inquire about Army ROTC scholarships by contacting the Department of Military Science.
Army ROTC Basic Course
The Basic Course, normally completed in the freshman and sophomore years, provides the student with a general knowledge of the military’s role in our society and the missions of the Army. Subjects include leadership, land navigation, marksmanship, first aid and basic military skills. Students enroll in one Military Science course each semester. It is possible for a sophomore to complete the Basic Course in one year through prior arrangement with the Department. No military obligation is incurred for non-scholarship students participating in or completing the Basic Course. Successful completion of the Basic Course is a prerequisite for enrollment in the ROTC Advanced Course. Selected sophomores and juniors also can qualify for the Advanced Course by completing ROTC Basic Camp in the summer, or through prior military service, either active or reserve.

Supreme Allied Commander Europe
General Wesley K. Clark, US Army
General Wesley K. Clark became the Supreme Allied Commander Europe on 11 July 1997. He is also the Commander-in-Chief, United States European Command. General Clark's last assignment was as Commander-in-Chief, United States Southern Command, Panama, from June 1996 to July 1997, where he commanded all U.S. forces and was responsible for the direction of most U.S. military activities and interests in Latin America and the Caribbean. His previous assignment was as the Director, Strategic Plans and Policy, J5, the Joint Staff (April 1994-June 1996) where he was the staff officer responsible for world-wide politico-military affairs and U.S. military strategic planning. He also led the military negotiations for the Bosnian Peace Accords at Dayton. General Clark is an Armor Officer who has commanded at every level from Company to Division. As the Commander 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas (August 1992-April 1994), he transitioned the Division into a rapidly deployable force and conducted three emergency deployments to Kuwait. During the Cold War, he commanded the 3rd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division (April 1986-March 1988), and the 1st Battalion, 77th Armor, 4th Infantry Division (February 1980-June 1982) at Fort Carson, Colorado. General Clark has also commanded three companies, to include a mechanized infantry company in combat in Vietnam. General Clark spent 5 years training leaders and soldiers at the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, California, and with the Battle Command Training Program (BCTP). As the Commander of National Training Center (October 1989-October 1991), General Clark helped train many of the forces that subsequently saw combat operations in Desert Storm. During this time period, he developed new training methodologies for Division and Corps level training, helping to train 13 Divisions, and he conducted the first ever Corps level BCTP training exercise. In his first assignment at the National Training Center, as Commander Operations Group (August 1984-January 1986), he revised the overall training program by improving scenarios, enhancing After Action Reports, and developing the first Brigade-level training exercise and the first heavy-light rotations.
