Michael P. Anderson (1959-2003) lived in Omaha. Military officer, pilot, astronaut, flew on NASA space shuttle Endeavour during 10-day mission in 1998, docking with the Russian Mir, and on NASA space shuttle Columbia during 16-day mission in 2003, conducting experiments on International Space Station; achieved rank of lieutenant colonel during 22-year career in U.S. Air Force; died on February 1, 2003 during accident returning to earth. Through a curriculum offered by the Temple Department of Military Science, qualified full-time students can earn a commission as an Active Duty, Reserve, or National Guard Officer, while con-currently satisfying academic requirements for a baccalaureate or graduate degree. Military Science courses are open to all Temple students. There is no requirement for students taking Military Science courses to enroll in the commissioning program. Students taking Military Science courses are under no military service obligation of any kind. Students enrolled in the commissioning program incur either an active duty or reserve forces duty commitment commencing upon successful completion of the ROTC Advanced Course Program and graduation from college. Temple's Department of Military Science offers both two-year and four-year curricula leading to a commission in the United States Army. Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (AROTC) Four-Year Commissioning Program The Four-Year Program consists of two phases: the Basic Course and the Advanced Course.

    Brigadier General James H. Banville
    General Banville's military career began as a private in the 32nd Division, Wisconsin National Guard in 1919. He received his commission and his bachelor's degree from Ripon College in 1923 and his master's degree in administration from the University of Wisconsin in 1934. He is a graduate of the National War College
    Prior to entering active military service, General Banville was a science teacher at Ripon High School and served in various teaching and administrative positions.
    General Banville, a native of Ripon, Wisconsin, entered active duty in October 1940 and his military service was spent primarily in the personnel and administration specialties. Some of his assignments were at Fort Sheridan; Fort Custer; Headquarters, Army Ground Force, Washington D.C.; Office of Assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel, Department of the Army; Joint U.S. Advisory Group to the Republic of China; The Adjutant General's Office on various assignments; and as Adjutant General, U.S. Army Forces Far East. He was Chief, Personnel Division, The Adjutant General's Office when he retired in June 1957.

    Army Reserve Officers Training Corps
    Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) is offered by the University and is available to all students. Physically qualified American citizens who complete the entire four-year program are eligible to be commissioned in the U.S. Army. Delayed entry into active service for the purpose of graduate study is available. Military science course work is designed to complement other instruction offered at the University. Emphasis throughout is on the development of individual leadership ability and preparation of the student for future leadership roles in the Army. Professional military education skills in written communications, human behavior, history, mathematical reasoning, and computer literacy are fulfilled through required University Core Curriculum requirements and the military science curriculum. There are three variations of ROTC available:
    • The Four-Year Program: During the four-year program, students participate in required military science courses and activities. Attendance at a six-week advanced training camp is required between the third and fourth years. The eight courses required in this program are listed below.
    • The Two-Year Program: The two-year ROTC program begins with a six-week Camp Challenge summer training session (with pay). After successful completion of Camp Challenge, the student enters the third year of ROTC and attends advanced cam during the next summer. Enlisted members of the Army National Guard or Army Reserves who have completed basic training can qualify for the two-year ROTC Simultaneous Membership Program.
