A Personal Tribute in memory of
September 11, 2001 Welcome to San antonio! It's a great place to call home! Forget everything you've seen in the movies. We don't live on ranches and we don't ride around on horses chasing cows. Some of us do wear cowboy boots, though. You're more likely to see a few baseball hats and tee-shirts. If you drive a truck you'll fit right in! San Antonio is a beautiful, romantic, fairly modern city with a strong Spanish influence. It's a large city but has a small town feel that's delightfully laid back. We just aren't in a big hurry unless we're driving. Speaking of which, we have an excellent highway system that makes it easy to find your way around town. (You may have to dodge a lot of pot holes and put up with endless road construction but it's worth it.) You'll have a hard time running out of places to shop or eat in our great city so bring your credit cards and your appetite! The food is delicious! If you're a hopeless romantic, you'll love the River Walk. We have a very nice zoo that's fun for people of all ages and of course everyone must see the Alamo and the Quadrangle at Fort Sam Houston (you can feed the deer and rabbits). Don't forget our San Antonio Spurs - a real class act! Real estate in San Antonio is very affordable! The

Recruiters are salespeople with a quota to meet. If students are learning about the military from recruiters alone, they're getting only part of the story. Their education is being shortchanged. Read this expose from an ex-Marine! CCCO's Military Out of Our Schools Campaign works with people like you, local members of communities nationwide, to restrict recruiter's access to schools and gain equal access to talk about the realities of military life and present alternatives to military service . 129. About St. John's Military School
We are members of the National Association of Episcopal schools and the Association of military Colleges and schools of the United States.
http://www.sjms.org/school.html
The Right Reverend Elisha Smith Thomas may be called the founder of St. John's. Soon after taking up residence in Salina as Episcopal Bishop Coadjutor of Kansas, he interested a number of prominent citizens in the idea of a military school and soon the school was incorporated. Late in 1887, the Rt. Rev. Thomas H. Vail, Bishop of the Diocese of Kansas, laid the cornerstone of the first building known as Vail Hall which stood until 1978 when it was destroyed by fire. St. John's Before 1948 fire St. John's After 1948 As we begin the new millennium, St. John's continues to train young men to harbor the cherished qualities of honesty, loyalty and duty. Our goal is to bring out the best in each cadet, which is evident in our commitment to one-on-one instruction and guidance. The school also continues its close and mutually beneficial relationship with the community of Salina. Home to three colleges and other post-secondary institutions, Salina is a progressive city that provides the benefits of a larger city with a small-town atmosphere. St. John's Military School is debt free and has an operating budget of $3 million. We are accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Kansas Department of Education. We are members of the National Association of Episcopal Schools and the Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States.

High School cadets in Mariette, Georgia Should the military be given the names of every high school student in America? By David Goodman November/December 2002 Issue

Sharon Shea-Keneally, principal of Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vermont, was shocked when she received a letter in May from military recruiters demanding a list of all her students, including names, addresses, and phone numbers. The school invites recruiters to participate in career days and job fairs, but like most school districts, it keeps student information strictly confidential. "We don't give out a list of names of our kids to anybody," says Shea-Keneally, "not to colleges, churches, employers nobody." But when Shea-Keneally insisted on an explanation, she was in for an even bigger surprise: The recruiters cited the No Child Left Behind Act, President Bush's sweeping new education law passed earlier this year. There, buried deep within the law's 670 pages, is a provision requiring public secondary schools to provide military recruiters not only with access to facilities, but also with contact information for every student or face a cutoff of all federal aid.

Executive VP, SchoolMatch ... with daycare and post-graduate options. Recently, we were helping a fast-growing corporation relocate its headquarters from Chicago to Denver. To provide local expertise, we engaged Dr. Richard Koeppe, former Superintendent of Schools in Denver and Cherry Creek (CO), as a consultant. Parents were waiting in line to talk with Dick or one of us. A "fast-tracked" vice president walked up and said, "Just tell me what the best school is in greater Denver. I need to get over to check on a mortgage in a few minutes." Dick tried to explain that it would be helpful if we knew something about the executive's children, their schooling history and their interests. The guy just simply didn't seem to get it. He just wanted us to tell him what the best school was in Denver. Thankfully, his wife shooed him away, and worked very reasonably through the selection process with us. In our previous lives as a school system superintendent and college dean, we thought we had some idea of the level of parents' knowledge of what goes on in their children's schools. Oh yes, we knew there were some parents whose own lack of education made what we now call

137. Contractors On The Battlefield

October 2003 Vol. 32, no. 2 Contractors on the Battlefield Since the end of the Cold War there has been a disproportionate growth in the tail to tooth ratio on the battlefield; that is, a marked escalation in the number of support functions relative to actual combat power. As weapons and equipment become more complex and challenging to maintain and operate, there is a greater willingness to rely on civilian contractors who can provide services ranging from monitoring advanced weapon systems to rendering technical assistance and logistical support. No longer restricted solely to acquisition and logistical functions, contractors often accompany the military into war zones and even into battle. Is the battlefield contractor, in a sense, a corporate soldier and is the U.S. military becoming increasingly commercialized, privatized, and outsourced? The presence of civilians accompanying the force on the battlefield has legal and ethical ramifications and raises troubling questions relating to issues of chain of command, authority, accountability, force protection, and, ultimately, mission effectiveness. That presence, too, provokes discussion about the growth of the privatized military industry and the reliance on civilians in the realm of military training, international security missions, and peacekeeping operations. Books, documents, and periodical articles cited below are available in the Naval War College Library or may be accessed electronically via the Internet or the various online databases.

Overview of Military School-Age Care Program School-age care (SAC) programs are offered for children (ages 6-12 years) before and after school, during holidays, and summer vacations. The SAC programs complement, rather than duplicate, the school day. Emphasis is placed on SAC programs which meet community needs, reinforce family values, and promote the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development of children. Currently, about 41,300 (25%) of the total number of spaces are provided for SAC. This area of care is currently expanding with new initiatives being implemented at the Service level to more fully meet this need. Not all SAC is provided in CDCs, much of it is provided in youth centers or other suitable facilities. In addition, new initiatives that include partnering with local schools and other off-base organizations have begun.

"Military School Memories"
by Chef Troy I went to military school from seventh grade until I graduated from high school. My wife and I were talking one night about how schools were prone to spank first and ask questions later when we were kids, and it reminded me of this story. When I was a freshman or sophomore in high school, I hadn't completely learned that I needed to keep my mouth on a short leash. That year we got a new Commandant in Charge of Discipline, a retired military man named Sergeant-Major Hunt. (you can imagine the behind-his-back nickname he acquired within nanoseconds of arriving on campus.) He had one of those killer paddles with the holes drilled in it to reduce wind drag. It whistled when he swung it. And I, you may be astonished to learn, was frequently one of the hapless cadets waiting outside his office before class to receive the Whupping of the Day. We were all convinced that there was no spark of humanity in the man. No soft side to appeal to, no sense of humor, nothing. He was just a yelling, paddling automaton. (He looked EXACTLY like G. Gordon Liddy - make of that what you will.) And I did a wickedly accurate impression of him.
