Long Gray Lines
The Southern Military School Tradition, 1839-1915
by Rod Andrew Jr.
During the antebellum period, every southern state founded state-supported military schools. The South's preoccupation with military education was a reflection of southern culture, educational philosophy, and political ideology. Contrary to popular belief, these schools were not marked by belligerence to the North, constant perception of threats from the outside, and preparation for armed conflict. Rather, Rod Andrews Jr. demonstrates that these schools were more concerned with instilling in their students broad values of honor, patriotism, civic duty and virtue. As the first thorough study of southern military schools, their educational practices, and the values behind those practices, Andrew's findings have important implications for understanding the Lost Cause and its cultural significance, the history of education in the South, and Southern identity. He finds that the schools' teachers and students believed that raising good soldiers meant raising good citizens-not just of the South but of the nation. Andrew also examines military education at traditionally black colleges and universities in the South. He discovers that while these institutions faced struggles that white schools did not, the belief that citizenship was closely tied to soldiership motivated southern black educators and cadets to pursue military education just as it did whites.

Military Schools - Past vs. Present
Times have changed. Back in the 60's and 70's parents looked to military schools as the place to send a defiant teen that needed help to change his life. In the past decade, our country's military has become much more selective as to whom they will or will not accept. This trend has become even more apparent in private military schools. In most cases a defiant teen will have a very difficult time making it into and staying in any military school.
In a recent survey of 30 traditional military schools, we found that only one military school would take a student that was not willing to be there. Most military schools will expel students that break rules. If the school has a non-refundable tuition policy, that can be very expensive for you. The remaining 29 military schools had a series of questions and admission criteria similar to those listed below:
  • Prior academic history and curriculum is required for approval to attend.

    74. Boot Camps For Teens - Boot Camps And Military Schools
Explore your options we offer comprehensive information for parents about military schools, boot camps and juvenile boot camps for your troubled teen.
    http://www.bootcampsforteens.com/boot.html
    Boot Camps
There are several types of teenage boot camps. There are short term and long term boot camps, there are state funded jail boot camps, prison boot camps, and privately owned boot camps. There are boot camps that will take teens who don't want to be there and boot camps that will only take willing participants. There are even weekend long boot camps. We believe that most teens will generally do better in a long term setting. If the teen is young and just beginning down a negative path sometimes a weekend wake-up call will help. The majority of the calls we take however, will need a longer stay, usually about 1 year. In most cases parent's have tried everything before they decide to seek outside help.
Military Schools, or Military Boarding Schools
Traditional Military Schools are usually not the appropriate placement for a defiant, unruly, out of control teen. Most of them will require an interview with the potential student and his or her family. In a recent survey 99% of the military schools we contacted were not interested in accepting a defiant, unwilling teen. The most difficult fact for most parents to deal with is the discharge policy. If a cadet or military school student is asked to leave, the parents lose their tuition. When you consider the fact that the reason the teen is being placed there to begin with is because he is defiant, the choice seems to be quite inappropriate. This coupled with the fact that tuition for the semester is paid in advance, the loss can be quite devastating.

Mexico is Now the Country Which Sends the Greatest Number of Forces to United States Military Schools
    La Jornada
August 16, 1998 Between 1996 and 1999, 3200 members of Air Transportation groups of the Special Forces (GAFE) of the Mexican Army "will take two-week courses with the 7th Group of the Special Forces of the United States," in order to then return to Mexico to train "rapid response" units," noted Darrin Wood, European expert on Latin American military affairs. Citing information from the US newspaper, The Washington Post, he said Mexican officials will be accompanied in these courses by the same Green Berets who were in El Salvador in the 80's, during the confrontations with the insurgent guerrillas. Wood notes that the campaigns carried out by independent organizations - national and foreign - against this training in military centers in the United States, do not seem to have affected the image of President Ernesto Zedillo's government, to such a degree that, now, "with zedillismo (sic), Mexico has more members of their armed forces receiving training than any other country in the world." In his analysis he indicates the kind of influence US officials have on Mexican military personnel, and he notes that it has to do with United States interests in Latin America.

    Military schools beef up security
By KEVIN HOWE khowe@montereyherald.com It's called "force protection." Just two years ago, the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio of Monterey and the Naval Postgraduate School looked much like civilian college campuses. Immediately after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, huge orange, water-filled plastic traffic barriers and armed troops in camouflage appeared outside the gates of the Presidio, NPS and the Monterey Coast Guard Station.
