Preppies Take Note: Military Schools Outperform You.
Psychologist says schools’ similarity to parents of first-borns is reason why. Santa Ana, California (PRWEB) September 4, 2003 - Military schools, long associated with strict rules, honor codes and juvenile delinquents, perform better than other schools. Behavioral psychologist Thomas K. Connellan, PhD., says he knows why. He says it’s because military schools mirror the parenting given to first-borns. Conellan’s studies show that while military schools have a greater percentage of black and Hispanic students, and that half of the students live below the poverty line, they still outperform traditional schools. Military school students score sixty percent higher than the national average in reading, second only to Connecticut public schools, and boast a ninety-seven percent graduation rate.

AGENDA 2000: MILITARY SCHOOLS
November 12, 1999
As our regular viewers know, we've asked a variety of individuals and groups what issues they want to hear the candidates in the 2000 presidential election address. Green Ifill handles this discussion with the heads and former heads of several military schools. GWEN IFILL: And tonight we are we hear the views of four retired military officers who ran the graduate colleges that turn out most of this country's generals and admirals. Rear Admiral Michael McDevitt was commandant of the National War College from 1995 to 1997. Air Force Major General Perry Smith was commandant of the National War College from 1983 to 1986. Lieutenant General Paul Cerjan was president of National Defense University from 1992 to 1994, and commandant of the army war college from 1989 to 1991. And Lieutenant General Paul Van Riper served as president of Marine Corps University from 1989 to 1990. Let's start here. What are the most important issues, do you believe, Admiral McDevitt, that the presidential candidates should be talking about this year? REAR ADM. MICHAEL McDEVITT (RET.), Former Commandant, National War College: Well, I think what we are you're going to hear are the... the issues you'll hear about are going to be national missile defense. You're going to be hearing are readiness, and you're going to be hearing about recruiting. I'm not sure that those are the most important issues. I think the most important issue is in terms of our broader security strategy, which has to reconcile the notion of our... of major wars or the two major theater wars that we have, humanitarian interventions and peacekeeping and other issues associated with presence as well as homeland defense. Those three major pieces are, to me, the issues that need to be addressed by the candidates. And I'm not sure that each and every one of them are addressing all three of those.

Long Gray Lines

The Southern Military School Tradition, 1839-1915
by Rod Andrew Jr.
Introduction.

Much of what little study there has been on southern military education has addressed the concept of a distinctive southern military tradition. The idea of a southern military tradition is a prominent but not universally accepted theme in the historiography of the South. Some historians claim that due to geography, frontier conditions, incessant warfare, slavery, and cultural notions of honor, the South developed into a remarkably militaristic society, fond of military display, preoccupied with war and notions of martial glory, and holding up military service and military training as honorable activities for males.[2] John Hope Franklin attributed the antebellum South's fascination with military schools to this military tradition and to the South's growing defensiveness and pugnacity as it perceived a growing threat to the institution of slavery. Other historians, such as Marcus Cunliffe and Don Higginbotham, have since denied that the antebellum South was a uniquely militaristic society, and they have pointed out that, at least initially, the military college was a northern innovation. They even deny Franklin's assertion that military schools were very popular in the South before 1861.[3] The debate over the distinctiveness of southern militarism often bogs down in statistical comparisons of how many southerners and northerners attended West Point, sectional representation within the officer corps, the actual effectiveness of local militias, and similar issues. Confusion over the definition of

School Uniform: Military School
Figure 1.This American boy pictured with his sister appears to an American miliyary school in the early 1900s. Note that he wears kneepants rather than knickers. Military schools have been operated in many European countries and America. We have relatively little information on them, especially before the 20th century. We do know that some were operating in the 17th century, but a few may have been founded earlier. The fact that many officers bought their commissions meant that military scools in the modern sence were not needed. The age of the boys and conditions varied substantially from to school.
Historical Background
Military schools are a relatively recent development. The earliest scools that we have noted so far are French schools operating in the 18th century. Presumably there were earlier schools, but probably not large numbers. There are two primary reasons that there were not very many earlier military schools. First, officers often purchased their commissions. This helped to ensure the king got officers from the nobility that would support the regime. It also meant that one did not need schooling or other qualifications. Secondly, until the French Revolution when the wole citizenry was mobilized, armies tended to be relatively small and did not need to train large numbers of officers.
Types
There are various types of military schools. HBC still has relatively little information on the different types of these schools.

The New Face of Military School
by Robin Hutchison

Michael Hart of Chapel Hill seems more like a young Renaissance man than a typical 19-year-old. An accomplished cellist with a passion for classical music, he speaks German fluently and has an insatiable lust for travel. He’s also a strong athlete, an impressive marksman and an articulate conversationalist. Even more surprising than finding these qualities in such a young man is learning that he honed these refined sensibilities at military school.
A graduate of Culver Academies in Culver, Indiana, Hart is an ideal poster child for any military school, except for one thing: Unlike the majority of military school graduates, he enlisted in the Army after finishing school. According to Hart, only 5 percent of Culver graduates enlist in the service, and, of the remaining 95 percent who attend college, only 15 percent enroll in a service academy such as West Point or the Air Force Academy.
As it turns out, Culver Academies is first and foremost a college preparatory school that places a priority on academics.

The 4 th Junior Military School Parade held ¡¡PLA Daily 2003-09-29 ¡¡¡¡On September 28, the General Political Department of the PLA, the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Youth League and National Committee on Youngster Work jointly held the 4 th National Junior Military Schools Parade in Beijing. Cao Gangchuan, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, state councilor and minister of the Ministry of National Defense was present at the parade and delivered a speech.
¡¡¡¡Cao said that establishing junior military school was an effective way for youngsters to receive education of "love the Party, love the motherland and love the army"and that on national defense. It was also an important channel through which to conduct quality education and enable youngsters to possess the Five Independents capabilities. We should earnestly carry through the demands of education on strengthening national defense put forward in the 16 th CPC National Congress and the National Defense Education Law of the PRC and continuously carry on the activity of opening junior military schools nationwide. We should carry through the Party's educational policy in an all-round way, stick to the correct orientation of junior military schools with the important thought of "Three Represents" as the guidance, stick to people oriented policy and educate the youngsters with patriotism, collectivism and socialism so as to help them to establish correct conviction and noble character.

Military schools' 'higher mission'
By BOB HARIG published September 22, 2001 Players around the country hit the field again today, trying to put world events out of their minds, at least for the few hours it takes to play the game. But for players at the military academies, that might be more difficult to do. For them, the threat of going to war is a very real possibility. "The darker side comes up," said Dustin Plumadore, a senior center for Army. "One of my teammates said, 'If something goes down, I wonder how many of us will be at our 10-year reunion?' I guess that sets us apart from a lot of other schools." Indeed, it does.
