Military Schools and Colleges
Military schools and colleges like Norwich University prepare students to become extraordinarily competent and responsible citizens. Military training, although important, is not the sole objective at Norwich. Our objective is to provide an environment of growth within which students learn how to become stronger and more determined leaders. Those who rise to the mental and physical challenges of life at a military college as a Cadet are rewarded with useful life skills, self-confidence and self-discipline. Theory can take a student only so far; some lessons require real life experience. The demands of life at military schools and colleges similar to Norwich University force Cadets to confront daily issues, which both challenge and define their characters as future leaders. The lifestyle of a Cadet leaves no room for apathy. Cadets learn to take responsibility for their actions, to support comrades in pursuit of a common goal, to step up, take charge and lead from the front. Graduates of Norwich University and other military schools and colleges make a difference in the world as leaders of our communities, businesses, government and military. They understand the values of initiative, integrity, honor and loyalty. They understand that a job well done is its own reward. Why? As Cadets, they gained the practical experience, knowledge and strength of character to try, no matter what obstacles they face in life.

The Corps of Cadets
The Norwich University Corps of Cadets is a military organization comprised of and led by students under the supervision of the Commandant of Cadets. It is within this organization that Cadets become part of a team, learn to follow, and then lead. The mission of the Corps is to motivate, encourage and develop leadership skills through a series of challenging situations which support academic excellence, enhance character, instill self-discipline and honor, and lead to lifelong success. In the end, the experience will have prepared you for the rigors of leadership, no matter where the future takes you.
Military College of Vermont
Captain Alden Partridge, a former superintendent and graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, founded Norwich University in 1819. Captain Partridge's idea of promoting military education in civilian institutions was new to American education. His belief was that, "education must prepare our youth to discharge, in the best possible manner, the duties they owe to themselves, to their fellow man and their country."

Versatile officer training is regulated by the Law about military schools and military scientific and research establishments.
In the process of reorganization of the Serbian and Montenegrin Armed Forces special attention has been given to optimal organizing in realization of complex educational functions, training, scientific work and publishing as mutually directly connected and coordinated administrative functions. By uniting these SMAF functions in peacetime, first phase of reorganization of the military educational system has been successfully completed. Further modernization of military educational system should provide, in modern conditions, versatile training of officers for one of the most creative human activities, commanding. Organizational changes in the SMAF school system are based on modern, scientifically established assumptions. Fishburne Military School
Fishburne Military School was founded in 1878 by James A. Fishburne, a student and protege of
Robert E. Lee. It was while attending Washington College that Fishburne was inspired by Lee to become an educator. The school flourished and, in 1916, Staunton architect T. J. Collins was commissioned to design a new barracks. Following the precedent of A. J. Davis's Virginia Military Institute , the barracks employed a castellated Gothic Revival style. The composition has since become downtown Waynesboro's chief architectural landmark. Collins's sons, Samuel and William, continued the tradition with their designs for the administration/gymnasium building and barracks additions. Fishburne has developed into one of the State's most distinguished military academies, continuously rated an honor military school under the U. S. Junior Army Reserve Officers Training Corps since 1924. It is one of the few military schools in Virginia to continue in operation. Fishburne Military School overlooks the city of Waynesboro. The main entrance to the school is via Church St., near the intersection of Main St. Visitor parking is provided in front of the Administration Building. For further information, visit the school's

Military Schools Exempted from "No Child Left Behind" Requirements
By Ken Anderson Jan 26, 2004, 09:53 Email this article Printer friendly page WASHINGTON, D.C. Fifty-eight military schools, operated by the Department of Defense at military bases in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, are exempted from the requirements of the 2002 federal education act, mandating strict standards for testing and teacher certification, with penalties for schools that fail to meet the goals. The Department of Defense schools don't fall under "No Child Left Behind" requirements because their funding comes from the DoD rather than the Department of Education. Doug Kelsey, the deputy director of the DoD's school system, said that the schools are trying to live up to the spirit of the legislation despite the fact that the DoE has no jurisdiction over DoD schools. "We actively comply with the intent of the law," he said.

Myths About Military Schools
THE MYTHS
Have you ever heard the expression “if you don’t straighten up, I am going to send you to military school”? Parents have used this expression (or threat) for many years to get the attention of their sons or daughters when they are misbehaving. Unfortunately, this expression misleads our young people to believe that military schools only accept “bad” kids. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The purpose of this paper is to dispel some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding military schools that we often hear from parents and students. Even though thousands of young men and women graduate from military schools every year, many people have an inaccurate image of military schools in general.
MYTH #1: MILITARY SCHOOLS ARE FOR STUDENTS WITH DISCIPLINE PROBLEMS
IN REALITY: Military schools offer a structured and disciplined environment for young people. Few, if any, military schools accept students with severe discipline problems (especially those discipline problems involving drugs or the law).
