Staff Sgt. Kenneth Carlson of the 649th Military Police Company shows Iraqi police officers how to subdue an offender using a nightstick at Diyala police headquarters in Baqouba, Iraq, on Thursday.

The Iraqi lawmen smiled as they unpacked dozens of boxes containing 300 bulletproof vests, 125 two-way radios with chargers and batteries, 250 helmets and various other items. Soon, they were trying on vests and helmets and getting on-the-spot lessons on using riot sticks from their American counterparts. Detective Michael Harris of the Fresno Police Department, who helped collect the gear, said the 5-year-old bulletproof vests are past their use-by date but work perfectly. If they had not been donated to Iraq, the Californian police departments would have to pay for their destruction, he said.

(FORT CAMPBELL, Ky., May 12th, 2004, 12:30 p.m.) A military police battalion was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation on Wednesday for extraordinary heroism in Iraq, receiving it for the second time in unit history. The award Wednesday for the 716th Military Police Company was especially gratifying to the soldiers because it contrasts news out of Iraq about the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. military police officers at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. "I think you should take this story and put it right over top of the other one," said Terri Dorn, commander of the 194th Military Police Company within the battalion. "There are so many good things that the military police do, so many good things that these soldiers have done and it's kind of sad to have an individual incident happen and it just kind of clouds over all the good things that we've been doing," said Dorn, 32, of Green Bay, Wis. The 716th Military Police Battalion is the only one in Army military police corps history to receive the award, which honors actions that set it apart from others in the same war, said battalion commander Lt. Col. Aston Hayes.

The Theater of Our Operations
Historians of ideas usually attribute the dream of a perfect society to the philosophers and jurists of the eighteenth century; but there was also a military dream of society; its fundamental reference was not to the state of nature, but to the meticulously subordinated cogs of a machine, not to the primal social contract, but to permanent coercions, not to fundamental rights, but to indefinitely progressive forms of training, not to the general will but to automatic docility. Michel Foucault, Discipline and Punish A small, informal group that engages in a completely legal and non-violent form of protest, the Surveillance Camera Players (SCP) shouldn't be spied upon by anyone. What point is there in spying upon a group that displays itself in front of surveillance devices? And yet no one would be surprised if the Intelligence Division of the New York Police Department (NYPD) was keeping tabs on the SCP. Used for decades to spy (legally and illegally) upon all kinds of political dissidents, the NYPD's infamous "Red Squad" telephoned the SCP the day before one of its performances.

(AP/England family) WASHINGTON (AP) - An American general recommended that U.S. army prison guards in Iraq become more involved in "softening up" prisoners for interrogations shortly before abuses occurred at the Abu Ghraib prison last fall, according to an internal report at the heart of the controversy. It is a role that military police are not trained to perform and are prohibited from doing, the army says; that led members of Congress to press Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Friday, largely unsuccessfully, for details on what role military police played at the troubled prison.

Alien in Custody of U.S. Military Police This photo allegedly depicts an alien survivor of a UFO crash in the custody of two U.S. Military Policemen. This picture was originally obtained from a U.S. soldier that was stationed in Weisbaden, Germany in the late 1940s. It remains unclear exactly how the GI came into possession of this photo. Also unknown are the identities of the two MPs, the location of the base where the picture is purportedly taken, and the exact nature of the breathing apparatus worn by the alien. On May 22, 1950, an anonymous individual gave the original photograph to Agent John Quinn of the New Orleans FBI Field Office. The informant claimed to have purchased the photo for $1.00 from another individual and was turning it over to the U.S. government because it showed that a "Man from Mars" was in the United States. Training officers say they always have stressed the humane treatment of prisoners There are new allegations that military intelligence may have played a role in the prisoner abuse scandal in Iraq.
But so far the only soldiers to face criminal charges are reservists from a military police unit. Against the background, the US Army Military Police has let a few journalists into its training base in Missouri. It was a controlled visit, clearly designed to counter the negative impact of the images from Abu Ghraib. Military police in training At Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, the US Army trains soldiers how to be military police. Time and again, I heard the instructors drumming into these soldiers that they must treat their captives humanely and protect them from abuse. The commanders here insist that the training has not changed in any way because of what has happened recently.
