The United States Navy defeated a Japanese attack against Midway Atoll , marking a turning point in the war in the Pacific theatre. Fought just a month after the Battle of the Coral Sea , Midway was the turning point of the Pacific Campaign . Skill, daring, and luck all played a part. The attack on the island of Midway, which also included a feint to Alaska by a smaller fleet, was a ploy by the Japanese to draw the American carrier fleet into a trap. With the remaining American ships destroyed, the Japanese hoped to avenge the bombing of the Japanese home islands during Tokyo Air Raid , finish off the US Pacific Fleet, and perhaps even invade and take Hawaii In addition, considerable academic debate has centered on whether Japan could or would have threatened attack against the US West Coast. Had the Japanese achieved their objective at Midway of a quick knock-out of the US Pacific Fleet (part one of the Japanese plan having been successful just six months earlier at Pearl Harbor), the US West Coast would have been substantially defenseless against the Japanese Navy. The remaining US naval ships were fully deployed halfway around the world in the North Atlantic. One academic camp stresses that regional conquest, and not conquest of North America, was the Japanese objective; another argues that is irrelevant, and that threatened or actual attacks on the US West Coast would have caused the US either to sue for peace, or divert military assets away from Europe, thereby at best lengthening the war in the European theater, and at worst allowing Germany to prevail.

The United States of America is comprised of more than just her fifty states. The US also owns territories in trust, most of which are islands scattered about the Pacific Ocean. Although nearly all of the US owned islands have the white sandy beaches and turquoise waters of the more popular US territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, not all are truly tourist destinations. Some 2300 miles off the coast of Hawaii, deep within the Pacific Ocean, lies the American Samoa Islands. The territory consists of seven islands with a total population of approximately 56,000 people. The Islands are currently under the administration of the US Department of the Interior. They are considered unincorporated islands which means that most, but not all, of the US Constitution applies to the Samoans and their land. The natives of these islands are considered to be the last remaining true Polynesians. bodyOffer(30027) The National Park of American Samoa protects 8,000 acres of paleotropical rainforest and coral reef. It is also a refuge for the Flying Fruit bat. Despite the park, tourism to the Samoa Islands is low. According to the US Department of the Interior, the Islands have no international airline service, only one major hotel, and they are frequently battered by damaging typhoons. The islands remain, however, important in the tuna canning industry.

"Midway in Retrospect: The Still Under-Appreciated Victory"
The Battle of Midway, fought near the Central Pacific island of Midway, is considered the decisive battle of the war in the Pacific. Before this battle the Japanese were on the offensive, capturing territory throughout Asia and the Pacific. By their attack, the Japanese had planned to capture Midway to use as an advance base, as well as to entrap and destroy the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Because of communication intelligence successes, the U.S. Pacific Fleet surprised the Japanese forces, sinking the four Japanese carriers, that had attacked Pearl Harbor only six months before, while only losing of one carrier. After Midway, the Americans and their Allies took the offensive in the Pacific. Background to the Battle of Midway Following the outbreak of the Pacific War in December 1941, the Japanese armed forces conducted military operations against U.S., British Commonwealth, and Dutch possessions in the Pacific and Southeast Asia. The first phase of these operations, which was the seizure of Malaysia, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, the Philippines, and various island groups in the central and western Pacific, was virtually complete by March 1942. The second phase, initiated by Japanese Imperial Headquarters on 23 January, was designed to isolate and neutralize Australia and India. In the Pacific, this plan envisioned the seizure of bases in Papua/New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, which would be used to support future operations against New Caledonia, Fiji, and Samoa. By early March, with the seizure of Lae and Salamaua, the entire north coast of Papua/New Guinea had fallen to Japanese forces who were planning for an amphibious invasion of Port Moresby.

T he Lonely Island It's a very lonely island, about, well, about Midway between California and Asia, and about 5 degrees north of the Tropic of Cancer. Home of the 'gooney' bird, Midway is 1,304 miles (2086km) west of Honolulu, and 1,182 miles (1891km) east of Wake Island (where? Wake is another story!) which in turn is 1,500 miles (2400km) east of Guam. Yes, it's a very lonely place. The Commercial Cable Company established a small outpost there near 1900, as the first trans-Pacific submarine cable reached the island, which formed part of the very young Territory of Hawaii. The US had just taken possession of Guam and the Philippines after the US-Spanish War, and the northern Pacific was an area of growing US influence. On Midway, the small cable staff shared the island with hundreds of thousands of gooney birds (albatross) and other bird species, and the island was declared a bird sanctuary. In early 1935, a hotel, restaurant, power generator and the other makings of a tourist resort appeared from the east on a cargo ship and were quickly rebuilt on the island. The Pan Am China Clipper Arrives A tourist resort? The Pan American Airways Company, having succeeded in breaking the isolation of Latin America with its luxurious flying clippers, now turned its attention towards the Orient. During 1935, a series of test flights were made with giant China Clippers to pave the way for a new air service from San Francisco (Alameda Bay) to Manila via Honolulu, Midway, Wake, and Guam.
