Quizid "Ideal" Authentication Solution for Middle East?
At the launch of the Quizid card at the British House of Commons on Wednesday both Dr Simon Moores and Mr Richard Barrington of the UK Government's Office of the e-Envoy, praised Quizid's solution to the challenge of mass market authentication for an information society. Dr Moores, in discussion with British members of Parliament, also described Quizid as an "ideal" solution for the GCC countries, an opinion based on his recent experience as the UK government's technology 'ambassador' in the region.

What are criminal gangs but petty kingdoms? A gang is a group of men under the command of a leader, bound by a compact of association, in which the plunder is divided according to an agreed convention. If this villainy wins so many recruits from the ranks of the demoralized that it acquires territory, establishes a base, captures cities and subdues people, it openly arrogates itself the title of kingdom. ¤Saint Augustine A woman farmer extracting cannabis plants from field in Ketama. Environmental Legislation In the Middle East A Preliminary Summary
By Howard L. Stovall In the following preliminary summary, we list some of the more significant legislation enacted by Middle East countries concerning environmental matters. This summary is based on material currently available in our Chicago offices, and supplemented in some cases by advice from our correspondent law firms in the Middle East. Many Middle East countries have only recently enacted and begun implementing general environmental legislation. In some cases, those laws do not contain the detailed or specialized rules found in similar laws in the United States for example, specific rules for solid waste, hazardous chemicals, marine pollution and the like. In other cases, however, municipal regulations will provide additional requirements to supplement a Middle East country's general environmental laws. In addition, under general principles of law in the Middle East (whether Islamic law rules in countries like Saudi Arabia, or civil law rules adopted elsewhere in the region) a party causing environmental damage might be liable either under contract or tort for actions which cause injury to the physical or financial interests of another party. In extreme cases, general criminal law rules in a Middle East country might be relevant (as recently occurred in Lebanon, where the import and dumping of toxic wastes was deemed a "violation of the domestic security of the country".)

Resolution "Bringing Justice and Peace to The Middle East" Assistant Moderator Frieberg called on Rev. Susan P. Townsley, Chair of Committee Six, for two pieces of business. Ms. Townsley directed the delegates to the Resolution "Bringing Justice and Peace to The Middle East" and, on behalf of Committee Six, moved its adoption. Rev. Sharon K. Prestemon (WIS) shared that just days before General Synod began she returned from a brief time of service/study in Israel/Palestine. She shared observations from her trip and urged passage of this Resolution. Rev. Eric Kirkegaard (WIS) offered a friendly amendment adding to the first paragraph of the "Be it resolved" the words "non-violent" in the sentence which then would read in part, "to use financial resources in non-violent ways that deter development of Israeli settlements in Palestinian areas."

Director of Churches for Middle East Peace Letter to G.W. Bush To: Christian leaders who signed the Sept. 12 letter to the President on Iraq
From: Corinne Whitlatch, Director of Churches for Middle East Peace Following is the September 12 letter to President Bush with names and affiliations of signers. Some names were provided by staff who are asked to bring this letter to the signer's attention.
September 12, 2002
The Honorable George W. Bush
President of the United States of America
The White House
Washington, D.C. 20500
Dear Mr. President:
We, like all Americans, kneel in prayer and remembrance for the tragedy and violence that obliterated the lives of so many people one year ago. As American religious leaders, we have sought during this year to listen, to learn, and to grow in our faith and compassion both for persons in our congregations and also for those many outside of our churches. We applaud your leadership in bringing peoples of disparate faiths together to worship, to mourn, and to move on boldly with our lives in a more caring fashion and with appreciation for the precious gifts of God given to all humankind. Today, however, we write out of concern that those same precious gifts may be damaged by actions being contemplated by our nation. We, leaders of American churches and church-related organizations, are alarmed by recent statements by yourself and others in the Administration about pre-emptive military action against Iraq for the expressed purpose of toppling the regime of Saddam Hussein. Understanding that Mr. Hussein poses a threat to his neighbors and to his own people, we nevertheless believe it is wrong, as well as detrimental to U.S. interests, to take such action.
