General Map of the Mediterranean and Middle East
All boundaries, and borders of countries, are aproximate . The territory controlled by a king or people varied from time to time, and was often disputed by other peoples. Even the coast-line has varied over the years, particularly in the Gulf of Persia; an approximation to the modern coast-line is generally used in the maps. The sites of some ancient cities are now not known with certainty; such cities are either not shown on the maps, or are labelled as "probable site of . . " NATIONS and REGIONS Notes : Upper and Lower Egypt were so called because of their relative altitudes. Upper Egypt lay along the upper reaches of the Nile, where it comes down from the mountains. Lower Egypt lay along the lower Nile as it approached the Sea.
Not all the countries shown existed together at the same time.
Carthage was a colony founded by the Phoenicians.
Rome (shown here as the Italian penninsular) started as a small village, and eventually became a great empire.
The Hittites eventually lost their homeland.

In the 1930s, the discovery of oil transformed the country. Following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Saudi Arabia accepted the Kuwaiti royal family and 400,000 refugees while allowing Western and Arab troops to deploy on its soil for the liberation of Kuwait the following year. A burgeoning population, aquifer depletion, and an economy largely dependent on petroleum output and prices are all major governmental concerns.
