GEOGRAPHY 275: GEOGRAPHY OF THE MIDDLE EAST Fall, 2003; JOE HOBBS, PROFESSOR The purpose of this course is to introduce you to the Middle East. When you finish this course you will be able to think and speak effectively about the Middle East, particularly about relationships between villagers, nomads and city folk; about the environmental history of the region; about management of modern environmental problems such as water shortages; about the civilization of Islam; about the geographies of sacred places; about the reasons for war; and about the need for peace. The course is divided into quarters. The first of these deals mostly with the ecological history of the region. We will look at the natural resources of the region and at the adaptations of peasants, pastoral nomads and ancient urbanites to local environments. In the second quarter we will examine the roots of the faith and culture of Islam, and the sacred places of Sinai and Jerusalem. The Arab-Israeli conflict will occupy the third quarter. We will pay special attention to the Palestinian-Israeli troubles. In the last quarter we will examine the reasons for American involvement in the Middle East (particularly in Iraq and in the war on terrorism), and look at political and environmental problems related to growing human populations and diminishing water. We will cover many topics that you might think have nothing to do with geography. Geography, however, is much more than place names and major industries. Peoples' cultures, religions, world views and politics affect the landscape. It would be impossible to understand the region without considering these factors.

Toward this end, the IES has taken under its aegis the Middle East Water Database, containing some 10,000 catalogued entries. IES has transformed the database into a web-accessible bibliography open to all users anywhere in the world without charge. The current range of sources in the database encompassing such topics as hydrology, geography, science and technology, economics, population, politics, law, management, and strategic affairs will be retained. The database already contains items that go beyond the Middle East and new bibliographical entries pertaining to other regions will continue to be added to broaden the scope of the database. Quick retrieval of bibliographical information is facilitated by the variety of ways entries can be searched. Please see the instructions below.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
  • Searches may be conducted by author, title, subject, country, basin, and keywords (e.g., climate, security, flow, population) Specify the information you would like to search. You can be as specific as you like, but more specificity may mean there will be fewer (or no) matching documents in the database.

    Al Jazeera: Voice of Arabia
Founded in 1996, Al Jazeera was the first 24-hour news channel in the Arab world. This documentary, shot on location in Qatar goes behind the scenes of this Arab independent satellite TV channel. Combining news footage, excerpts from various Al Jazeera programs, and interviews with executives, anchors and journalists, the film explores the paradoxes that emerge between the apparent orthodoxy of Arab societies and the journalistic freedom flaunted by Al Jazeera in a dictatorial culture which does not know the meaning of dialogue. 1993. 52 min. Recommended for maps that encompass the Middle East region or focus on individual countries. Several specialty maps. Topics and materials include country and region maps in formats such as historical, relief, and political. The impressive part of this site are the specialty maps. For example, Palestinian Refugee Camps, satellite images, land use, population density, economic activity, administrative division and some interactive maps. Be aware of one downfall. The maps are large and often cannot be seen in their entirety at a glance online. However, maps are in pdf (You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader) or j-peg format and are easily printed out directly from the web site.

GEOGRAPHY: Lebanon lies to the east of the Mediterranean, sharing borders to the north and east with the Syrian Arab Republic, and to the south with Israel. It is a mountainous country and between the two mountain ranges of Jebel Lubnan (Mount Lebanon), Mount Hermon and the Anti-Lebanon range lies the fertile Bekaa Valley. Approximately half of the country lies at an altitude of over 900m (3000ft). Into this small country is packed such a variety of scenery that there are few places to equal it in beauty and choice. The famous cedar trees grow high in the mountains, while the lower slopes bear grapes, apricots, plums, peaches, figs, olives and barley, often on terraces painstakingly cut out from the mountainsides. On the coastal plain, citrus fruit, bananas and vegetables are cultivated, with radishes and beans grown in tiny patches.
