PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Senate Floor Statement by U.S. Senator James M. Inhofe (R-Okla)
March 4, 2002 I was interested the other day when I heard that the de facto ruler, Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Abdullah, made a statement
which was received by many in this country as if it were a statement of fact, as if it were something new, a concept for peace in the Middle East that no one had ever heard of before. I was kind of shocked that it was so well received by many people who
had been down this road before.
I suggest to you that what Crown Prince Abdullah talked about a few days ago was not new at all. He tallked about the fact that under the Abdullah plan, Arabs would normalize relations with Israel in exchange for the Jewish state surrendering the territory
it received after the 1967 Six-Day War as if that were something new. He went on to talk about other land that had been acquired and had been taken by Israel.
I remember so well on December 4 when we covered all of this and the fact that there isn't anyhing new about the prospect of giving up land that is rightfully Israel's land in order to have peace.
When it gets right down to it, the land doesn't make that much difference because Yasser Arafat and others don't recognize

According to reports by United Nations and Human Rights agencies, each month an estimate of about six thousand Iraqi children perish from sanction related causes. That is, 133 children each day, nearly 50,000 a year die from complications from malnutrition and sewage contaminated water, from diarrhea, pneumonia and diseases like polio, cholera and typhoid. The proportional equivalent for the United States would be 69,000 children dying a month.

The Proto-Neolithic Cemetery in Shanidar Cave by Ralph S. Solecki Texas Archaeologists the world over breathed sighs of relief in April of 2003 when it was announced that of the three thousand artifacts looted from Baghdad's Iraq Museum, the prehistoric skulls and bones recovered from Shanidar Cave, which represented some of the earliest human ancestors found in the Middle East, remained safe and untouched. One of the real-life inspirations for Jean Auel's popular 1970s novel, The Clan of the Cave Bear , Shanidar Cave, discovered in 1951 by Ralph S. Solecki and his research team, lies nestled in the Baradost Mountains about four hundred kilometers north of Baghdad and is the only prehistoric cemetery site east of the Mediterranean. Long-awaited by anthropologists, The Proto-Neolithic Cemetery in Shanidar Cave systematically catalogs the thirty-five human skeletons, 26 burials and associated funerary artifacts excavated during the 1950s and 1960s. Other cave contents included stone tools, bone tools, gastropod shells, and animal teeth, all offering new evidence about the culture, agriculture, and trade of these people of the ninth millenium B.C. Although Shanidar Cave lies out of the main trade routes, its inhabitants maintained contact with distant areas in order to obtain obsidian, bitumen adhesive, exotic stones for beads, and other material. Because of this, cultural, social, economic, and religious customs were also being diffused throughout the area, heralding the "Neolithic Revolution."

History, Geography, Politics and Culture When the Middle East comes up in American conversation conventional wisdom usually has it that Arab civilization was great at one time, but not now. Is this a fair statement We don't think so. A good way to start is to focus on what the Middle East is, and not what it lacks. Whether it's the deep spirituality of Islam, the bustling entreprenurial energy of a souk (market), or the close ties of family and community, it's a pretty strong contrast to our fast connect/fast disconnect way of living. Religion is such a strong part of the region that it really belongs on this page, but in the interests of ease of use we have given it a separate (following) page. This page together with Religion starts to address an essential core of values and energy that come from the area, and are not necessarily evident on casual viewing. Don't overlook visiting our publications , where there is original writing dealing with these topics.

The New Push for Middle East Studies
by Arthur Clark
Saudi Aramco World
January/February 2003
When Will Smith needed a crash course in Islam to play Muslim prizefighter Muhammad Ali in the 2001 film "Ali," he turned to the Center for Near Eastern Studies at the University of California at Los Angeles. Munir Shaikh, a Ph.D. candidate there, took on the job of instructing the actor after film director Michael Mann promised Smith that "he would get to the point where he understood Islam from the inside," Shaikh says. Mann knew that if his film biography were to show respect for its subject, it would have to show respect for the religion Muhammad Ali embraced in 1964. That meant Will Smith would have to reach beyond the Muslim boxer's external behavior and come to some understanding of the faith in his heart. So Shaikh not only taught the actor how to perform the physical postures of Muslim prayers and to recite them in Arabic, but also taught him the principles of Islam. "He was very interested in understanding the meaning behind the religious acts," says Shaikh, "things like the value of fasting during Ramadan in terms of curbing one's ego and one's desires." Shaikh's role on the set of "Ali" is one—somewhat unusual—part of a fabric of formal education, scholarly research and public outreach being woven by a group of 15 Middle East area-studies centers partly funded by the federal government under Title VI of the Higher Education Act and the Fulbright-Hays International Studies Program. The centers, located on university campuses across America, focus on a region that, traditionally defined, stretches from Morocco in the west to Iran and Turkey in the east—but which lately has also come to include countries with Muslim populations in Central Asia and the former Soviet Union. Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, these centers have found their services more in demand than ever.

SERGE SCHMEMANN, "Jerusalem Is at the Heart of Most Middle East Disputes," New York Times, October 27, 1996
JERUSALEM It is a city with no river, no major airport, not much
industry, little strategic significance and too little water. Yet of all the
issues separating Jews and Palestinians, none approaches the passions
fired by Jerusalem.
"Why?" said the tough-talking mayor of Jerusalem, Ehu Olmert. "Because
when you separate all trivia from substance, this is the core of Jewish
existence. This is everything that constitutes the raison d'etre of our
existence."
Among Palestinians, rare is the home, shop or office that does not
prominently display a picture of the gilded Dome of the Rock, which has become the dominant symbol and icon of Palestinian nationhood. Every speech by Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian leader, includes an invocation of a future Palestinian state "with Holy Jerusalem as its capital." So powerful is the national and religious symbolism of the city and specifically of the man-made plateau that is sacred to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Haram al-Sharif, the "noble sanctuary"

Readers write in on WSWS coverage of the Middle East crisis
28 October 2000 Use this version to print The following is a selection of letters sent in reply to the October 16 WSWS http://www.wsws.org/articles/2000/oct2000/mide-o16.shtml I wholeheartedly agree with the last paragraph of the above article by Messrs. Marsden and North. Further, I can say with some conviction that unless their warnings are heeded: then Israel might well be cast into the sea, as some Arab spokespersons have iterated. There can be no way in which one nation's people can carve out a place for themselves without first providing a place for that other nation's people whose country they plan to use as a mould. To attempt to do so is at once suicidal, and genocidal. If Israel is unable to come to terms with the Palestinian people, to say nothing about their Arab neighbours, then certainly Israel's longevity can be calculated in years rather than in decades or centuries. Armageddon is the surest way to homelessness yet to be assayed in modern times. Shall Israel be that nation whose citizens who, collectively, are willing to launch it? PC 18 October 2000 There is no way that there will ever be peace in the Middle East, so long as there are states that are based on ethnic, racial and religious exclusivism, just as you said, and there will be no peace in the world so long as there are states based on financial market exclusivism as I am sure you agree as well. The mechanisms of religious monopolies, economic monopolies, government monopolies, and knowledge monopolies have plagued us for too long. Without a coordinated cease, desist, and transition they will continue to threaten our existence just as they do right at this very moment. Thank you for your article.
