Effects of Development of Water Resources on Dead Sea Water Level
Water is the most precious and valuable natural (and national) resource in the Middle East, vital for socioeconomic growth, sustainability of the environment, and—when considered to the extreme—for survival. This publication presents an overview of Middle East water resources in areas of Israeli, Jordanian, and Palestinian interest. Areal and site-specific hydrologic, meteorologic, and geologic data provided by water-resources agencies of the region are presented to allow a broad depiction of the overall water conditions in the region. This publication was developed as part of the Middle East Water Data Banks Project, which encourages management and protection of water resources on a regional basis. Work was completed as a cooperative effort among the three Core Parties and was coordinated under the umbrella of the Water Working Group of the Middle East Multilateral Peace Process. The participating water-resources institutions are the Palestinian Water Authority, Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation, and Israeli Hydrological Service.
Population and Water Supply
Water use will continue to increase with population and economic growth.

Return to 2000-2001 reports Cross-cultural home page February 27, 2001 Student comments at the end of biblical, geography and history study, Jerusalem University College “Learning about the land of the Bible is helpful to the understanding of it like a playing board is essential for a board game.” “I have a mental picture of Capernaum, where Jesus spent much of his life ministering and I have a deeper appreciation for the courage it would take for Jesus to enter a totally Greco-Roman area such as Decapolis and start preaching the Word. Understanding the politics of the time of Jesus’ life does nothing but enhance my admiration for Jesus.” “For me, the archeology helps to bring the Bible to life. I will never again read the Bible in the same way. Never!”

NUMBER 1515 . — April 17, 2002 ISSN 0882-3731 Contempt Causes Insanity
Dear Unknown Friends: The tremendous lesson that arises from the anguish and brutality now going on in the land of Israel/Palestine, is that humanity, all of us, must learn from Aesthetic Realism what contempt is. We must learn how contempt works in our own selves and how to criticize it. There is certainly brutality coming from both sides in the conflict. Yet the happenings in that land near the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea should make for these big questions: How could people whose relatives were tormented by the Nazis, were imprisoned in concentration camps, humiliated, worked to death, murdered in gas chambers — how could Jews now destroy the homes of Palestinians, shut off their water supply, kill women and children and keep ambulances from reaching them so that they bleed to death? I present these questions as a person who is Jewish, who cares very much for the state of Israel and wants her to flourish — to flourish authentically. Another question, which cries out to be asked by all humanity, is: If Jews, who have been so victimized, so brutalized, can become brutes themselves, who is not capable of large cruelty? Everyone is.

Geneticists Trace Migration of Mideast Agriculturists to Europe
By Kurt Holden
"[Dr. Cavalli-Sforza] finds that after the introduction of agriculture in the Middle East about 10,000 years ago, farmers from there spread at the rate of one kilometer, or five-eighths of a mile, a year, eventually settling throughout Europe. " New York Times July 27, 1993 The world generally credits the Sumerians, who lived in the marshlands created by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in southern Iraq, with the development of civilization. Although nearly contemporary river valley civilizations also developed in the Nile Valley of Egypt and the Indus Valley of Pakistan, the Sumerians seem to have been the first people to live in cities and to create a system of writing. Scientists also regard the "fertile crescent," an arc linking Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Israel/Palestine, as the site of the earlier "neolithic revolution," when hunter-gatherers first learned to plant crops, and then created permanent settlements to cultivate, guard and harvest them. The evidence is the fact that wild ancestors of the food crops associated with traditional Middle Eastern and European agriculture are native to the fertile crescent.
