AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC ARCHIVE FOR ARCHAEOLOGY IN THE MIDDLE EAST PATRON: HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS CROWN PRINCE HASSAN BIN TALAL
REMOTE SENSING FOR ARCHAEOLOGY IN THE MIDDLE EAST
As this photograph by James Sauer of the Roman fort of Qasr Bshir in Jordan illustrates, the antiquities of Jordan can be spectacularly well-preserved (see Kennedy and Riley 1990). The AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC ARCHIVE FOR ARCHAEOLOGY IN THE MIDDLE EAST was established in 1978 under the patronage of Crown Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan. Financial support has been provided by, amongst others, the British Academy, the Society of Antiquaries of London and the Australian Research Council. To date it consists of over 8000 photographs and several hundred maps for several countries, mainly Jordan. See also the link to the Aerial Archive for Jordan. Many other sites can be far less well-preserved. This small Byzantine town at Khirbet Khau in northern Jordan was difficult to interpret at ground level when visited by travellers a century ago and has been "lost" within the perimeter of a military base for the last half century. The air photograph, however, makes it far more readily and immediately intelligible, depicting the fort in the top right and the town which grew up around it on the west and south. The REMOTE SENSING FOR ARCHAEOLOGY IN THE MIDDLE EAST project is an outgrowth of the former, funded since 1991 by the Australian Research Council.

THE HIDDEN SPLENDORS OF SYRIA
At the crossroads of the Middle East, Syria’s colorful history dates back to primeval times. Yet, Syria remains a land to be discovered. This fascinating country, stretching from the shores of the Mediterranean Sea to beyond the Euphrates River, is extraordinarily rich in historical sites. And these ancient sites are refreshingly free of commercial ventures with an atmosphere of uncluttered authenticity no longer present at more well-trodden historical locations. Stately Roman ruins, ornately-painted Byzantine basilicas, awe-inspiring fortress-castles built by the Crusaders, and elegant Ottoman turbas (tombs) - all and more abound in this ancient land.

86. Omega Star-Child Seminars
Looks at prophecy on both a mundane and a personal level, with analysis of events in the middle east and the US, and references from the Bible and from ancient Egypt.
http://www.omegastar.org
Welcome to the website of Omega Star-Child Seminars and to the writings of Julie Redstone. Our purpose is to bring to you a vision of the sacred future of the earth and the sacred future of each individual being. This vision links the past and future and is built upon the spiritual legacy of ancient Egypt, the Covenant of Sinai, and the new Covenant of Christianity, each of which brought into the world new and increasing levels of awareness concerning God's reality. It is also built upon the bridge of emerging consciousness which links Eastern and Western spirituality, finding in both, the Divine presence within all of life. Prophesies of the past, particularly in the West, convey to us a future in which mankind will come to know God and the self in a whole new way. This new way is opening up now. Through the reawakening of the Divine Presence in human experience, through an understanding and reverence for the sacred action of the Word in life, and through the incorporation of a vision of one unified Reality which permeates all forms, the new way is being born. Such a way is not a new religion. Rather, it integrates teachings of East and West into a broader understanding of who and what God is. This understanding unites 'above' and 'below' in a way that was not possible before. As the awareness of unity awakens, so, too, does hope for "heaven on earth" - a heaven that includes the perception of God within the physical substance of matter as much as it does the perception of God as Creator of all. The emerging awareness of Divine and holy life present now is influenced by the experience of one Breath infusing all, moving all toward wholeness, linking Creator and Creation. As we awaken to this Breath and feel the sacredness of life, we begin to bring into manifestation the ancient Covenant of the Hebrews

Herat hones ancient skills
By Mike Patterson
HEART Bent over a slab worn down by time and use, Omaid employs centuries-old skills to mix ground-up stone, glass and metals to make colors for the tiles to restore Herat's magnificent mosque, the Masjid-i-Jami. Working in the gloom, Wakhil Ahmed, 30, fires lapis blue, turquoise, yellow and green tiles for the mosque that he has worked on for 20 years. In another room, a dozen men use sharp-edged hammers to chip the tiles into intricate shapes for the mosaics that will be fixed on to the mosque walls in place of those lost over the centuries. They are part of a team of 60 craftsmen who are working to restore the ancient building in the oasis city of Herat. "They are working the same as people did 500 years ago, and even better," Mashad Wahidi, head of Herat's historical monuments department, said of the craftsmen. "In Herat there are lots of old craftsmen so there is no problem with a lack of skills." The mosque dates back more than 1,000 years and was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1200 AD before suffering at the hands of Ghenghis Khan, who in 1222 slaughtered all but a handful of the city's population of 160,000. Later occupations and wars have also taken their toll.
