Between Ancient and Modern
In AD 476, warriors attacked the city of Rome and ended the more than 800 years of glory for the "eternal city." Historians mark the fall of Rome as the end of ancient history. The next one thousand years were called the Middle Ages. The Latin term for Middle Ages is "medieval." The early Middle Ages are often called the "Dark Ages" because the great civilizations of Greece and Rome had fallen. Life in Europe during the Middle Ages was very hard. Very few people could read or write and nobody expected conditions to improve. The only hope for most people during the Middle Ages was their strong belief in Christianity, and the hope that life in heaven would be better than life on earth. The Dark Ages were anything but dark in other parts of the world. The Muslims in the Middle East and North Africa studied and improved on the works of the ancient Greeks while civilization flourished in sub-Saharan Africa, China, India, and the Americas.

Ancient history of the Viking
History of the ancient Vikings.
The common perception of the Vikings is that of uncivilized, cruel raiders: innately violent and with no head for diplomacy. This public misconception, created in a great part by the European Christian historians of the time, is being disproved by modern archaeology. Archaeological findings give evidence of a highly organized network of trade and commerce, centered on the bustling ports of medieval Denmark, Norway and Sweden. bodyOffer(28867) Firstly, the delusion of surprise raids from unknown men of the North is a historical fallacy. The existence of the Norse people was very well known to Europeans, though Scandinavia was of little importance to the Christian heart of Europe. This deception was largely construed by Christian historians, who were, at that time, mostly men of the Church. Vikings were not only raiders and plunderers. While a strong farming economy supported them at home, they also excelled in trade and settlement of the lands they explored. In fact, Kiev and Dublin both began as Viking colonies! Most surprisingly, the Vikings were invited to settle France by the French themselves. The French King invited a Danish chieftain to settle in Normandy! So much for the Vikings being unwanted.

After the capture of the city by the Babylonians some thousands, probably selected for their prosperity and importance, were deported to Mesopotamia. The number of those who remained is disputed by scholars. Such deportations were commonplace in Assyrian and Babylonian policy. The exiles maintained close links with their kinsmen at home, as is clear from Ezekiel, the prophet of the early years of the Exile. In 538 B.C. , Cyrus the Great, the new master of the empire, initiated a new attitude toward the nations and decreed the restoration of worship at Jerusalem. The century following this decree was critical in the history of the Jews, for it is the time of their reintegration into a national and religious unit. For parts of the period, Ezra and Nehemiah are the best sources. The prophesied 70 years of captivity were fulfilled when the new Temple was completed in 516 B.C.

The name is sometimes given to the whole civilization of S Mesopotamia, including the states established by the city rulers of Lagash, Akkad (or Agade), Uruk, and Ur in the 3d millennium B.C. Historically it is limited to the first dynasty of Babylon established by Hammurabi (c.1750 B.C. ), and to the Neo-Babylonian period after the fall of the Assyrian Empire. Hammurabi, who had his capital at Babylon , issued the code of laws for the management of his large empire : for he was in control of most of the Tigris and Euphrates region even before he defeated the Elamites. Babylonian cuneiform writing was derived from the Sumerians. The quasifeudal society was divided into classes : the wealthy landowners and merchants and the priests; the less wealthy merchants, peasants, and artisans; and the slaves. The Babylonian religion (see Middle Eastern religions ) was inherited from the older Sumerian culture. All these Babylonian institutions influenced the civilization of

History of Iraq - Ancient to Present
CRADLE OF CIVILIZATION - What we now know as Iraq was historically called Mesopotamia. - It occupied the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers (in Arabic, the Dijla and Furat). - Another common reference for the Mesopotamian plain was the Fertile Crescent. - It is considered to be the Cradle of Civilization, as it provided the setting for the rise of many important developments that marked the division of mankind's social evolution from prehistory to history. Prior to the rise of Egypt, Greece, and Rome, the Sumerian people developed many of the cultural and economic affects that define civilization.
IMPORTANT INVENTIONS - Around 4000BC, the people of Sumer produced .. writing (in essence, out of economic need to keep tabs on "who owned and owed what") .. sophisticated agriculture and domestication of livestock (they developed the first plow) .. and contrary to a popular theme in cartoons, it was the Sumerians (not "cavemen") who invented the wheel.
Like many river systems in flood plains, the Tigris and Euphrates were unpredictable .. their banks would regularly rise and fall .. often creating devastating floods .. taking entire population groups with them. - Obviously, that's a drawback to living in flood plains .. however there is a significant benefit to this type of flooding. - Each flood would deposit mineral and nutrient rich sediment for miles along the river banks. - Over the centuries, that amounts to some very fertile land.
