Students will use maps to look at the distribution of oil in the Middle East and discuss what it means for the different countries in the region. They will also examine how water has influenced the region historically (in the "fertile crescent" region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers) and politically (for example, how Iraq's access to water is limited to one small part of its border). Finally, they will study specific aspects of Iraq's struggles with water, using satellite imagery to understand and illustrate the problem. Connections to the Curriculum: Geography, geology

In The Multiple Identities of the Middle East, eminent Middle East historian Bernard Lewis elucidates the critical role of identity in the domestic, regional, and international tensions and conflicts of the Middle East today. Examining religion, race and language, country, nation, and state, Lewis traces the rapid evolution of the identities of the Middle Eastern peoples, from the collapse of the centuries-old Ottoman Empire in 1918 to today's clash of old and new allegiances. He shows how, during the twentieth century, imported Western ideas such as liberalism, fascism, socialism, patriotism, and nationalism have transformed Middle Easterners' ancient notions of community, their self-perceptions, and their aspirations.

SUMERIANS The earliest known people of the Fertile Crescent were the Sumerians. About 4000 B.C. they lived in southern Mesopotamia in a number of independent city-states . Each consisted of a small city and its surrounding area. The rulers of these city-states constantly warred with one another. Map of Ancient Mesopotamia A. Cities Sumerian cities were often rectangular in shape, surrounded by high, wide walls. Inside the city gates were broad avenues used for religious processions or victory parades. The largest buildings were ziggurats (ZIHG uh rats), pyramid-temples that soared toward the heavens. Their sloping sides had terraces, or wide steps, that were sometimes planted with trees and shrubs. On top of each ziggurat stood a shrine to the chief god or goddess of the city.
Rulers lived in magnificant palaces with spacious courtyards. Most people, though, lived in tiny houses packed in a tangled web of narrow alleys and lanes. Artisans who practiced the same trade, such as weavers or carpenters, lived and worked in the same street. These shop-lined streets formed a bazaar, the ancestor of today's shopping mall. B. Economy

    Symbols From The Middle East
    by Shira
There are many ancient symbols that evoke images of the Middle East in our minds. Often, we recognize the symbol, but no longer know anything about its original significance. On this page, I would like to share those symbols with you and introduce you to a bit of their history.
    Aladdin's Lamp
Marco Polo reported a real-life individual named Aladdin, who was chief of the secret brotherhood of assassins, the hashishim, in the fortified valley of Alamut near Kazvin. Over time, several chieftains in turn adopted the name of Aladdin. This sect worshiped the moon as a symbol of the Goddess, as a Vessel Of Light. The Vessel was simultaneously Aladdin's lamp (source of a genie), and the moon (source of all souls).
All-Seeing Eye See the entries for Utchat and Eye Of Horus
Ankh The ankh was the Egyptian cross of life, representing the union of male and female sexual symbols: a female oval surmounting a male cross. Its other name was Key Of The Nile, because the sacred marriage between God and Goddess was supposed to take place at the source of the Nile each year before the flood. Egyptians regarded the ankh as a universal life-charm. In hieroglyphics, the ankh stood simply for the word "life".
Eye Of Horus This old Egyptian symbol actually appears on the Great Seal of the United States, and on every United States dollar bill. The reason is because the original designers of the Great Seal were influenced by Freemasonry, which had adopted a number of Egyptian religious symbols, including this one.
