Feature of the Week Multipurpose Global Container Line stresses advantage of variety Med, Africa, Middle East, and Indian subcontinent cargoes require diverse services by Janet Plume October 14, 2002 "There was an opportunity at the time because of a lack of service between the Middle East and East Africa," said Bijan Paksima, GCL vice president for North America. "There were few carriers in that sector." "GCL was founded on the idea that it would always be a multipurpose service and never focus on any single mode of transport," Paksima said. "It’s been a successful formula." "There was a big area of demand for aid cargoes in the Red Sea ports in Africa such as Eritrea, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique," Paksima said. "Today, it’s a huge market for us, and can account for a substantial percentage of our business."
