The Award carries a prize of Rupees One lakh and a citation. The Award aims to stimulate research in the areas of International Trade. Winning Entries 4. Dr. Mukherjee's thesis is on International Joint Ventures and Technology Transfer in Developing Economies. The thesis analyses the issues which impact on the preferences of joint ventures over technology licensing including the impact of host country policy and threat of imitation. Empirical findings show that in an economy with relatively weak patent protection, foreign firms prefer joint venture than licensing and better technology comes from joint ventures than licensing. The factors which influence technology licensing under various market structures including duopoly and oligopoly and the commitments by way of capacity installation or incentives have also been studied. Initial industry structure and technological differences among the firms are key factors determining the profitability of bilateral agreements.

India is home to some 1,200 different species of birds. Despite measures designed to protect this rich array of bird life by banning the capture and trade of wild birds, records indicate that as many as 300 of these species are caught and traded with impunity. The estimate comes from figures compiled by the Trade Records Analysis of Flora and Fauna in Commerce (TRAFFIC). These records show that large seizures of illegally captured wild birds in India number about 30 each year. In one of the largest recent incidents illustrating the huge scale of this flourishing black market, more than 10,000 birds were confiscated at the Mumbai (formerly called Bombay) international airport in March 2001. Until 1991, India was one of the largest exporters of wild birds to international bird markets. Most of the birds traded were parakeets and munias, especially the rose-ringed parakeet ( Psittacula krameri ), the black-headed munia (

Vinod Khanna to lead India at WEF Jordan meeting
Minister of State for External Affairs Vinod Khanna will lead the Indian delegation to the World Economic Forum extraordinary annual meeting in Jordan from June 21-23. R M Abhyankar, secretary, MEA, will also be part of the government delegation to be accompanied by a seven-member Confederation of Indian Industry team led by Hindustan Construction Company chairman Ajit Gulabchand, whose presence is seen as crucial with regard to the reconstruction work in Iraq. The extraordinary annual meeting is being held to bring the 'Spirit of Davos' to the Middle East during a period of global tension. The meeting would focus on the current conflict situation in the region and aim at replacing this with the spirit of cooperation through exchange of views among academia, religious, political, social and business leaders, a CII media release said on Thursday. Issues that are likely to figure during the meeting include state of trans-Atlantic relations, future of Middle East, the need to improve global economic performance and the effort to build a world more secure for all citizens. Khanna would speak on the prospects of global trade along with US Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Grant Aldonas, Boeing CEO Philip Condit, and Nestle CEO Peter Brabeck-Letmathe.

International Relations DPG places a high value on integrating national policies in a global context. In the last few decades, the world has been witness to the end of the ideological war of the century. New sources of conflicts and threats to traditional nation states have emerged. Regional economic centers have come into being. Economic issues have gained ascendancy in the policy dialogue among nations. And globalisation has made its impact down to the grassroots level. In such a scenario, it is essential to examine India's integration into a global economic, political and security system.
