The right chemistry
With a little help from HSBC, Al Nahda International has turned today's invoices into tomorrow's cash flow
Al Nahda International's unassuming head office, deep in Dubai's Al Quoz industrial area, tells little about its scope of operations. The company supplies industrial chemicals to some of the largest companies in the world – detergents to Unilever, oil refining chemicals to EPPCO, and paint chemicals to Jotun, to name just a few examples. Its distribution network stretches as far as China, although the majority of its customers are located in the Middle East and India. In addition, the company plans to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by oil-rich Iraq, and it also plans to expand into Africa. Typical of most companies with corporate customers spread all over the globe, Al Nahda conducts its trade through letters of credit (LCs), cheque discounting, and on open account terms with its regular customers. With the latter it often meant that payment could be delayed for up to 12 weeks. With an annual sales turnover of over $20 million, that meant a lot of cash tied up in debts owing to the company. Now, however, thanks to a new factoring service from HSBC, Al Nahda has been able to take more control of its trade cash flows.
How factoring works
"With LCs, there was a lot of paperwork," acknowledges T.R. Vijayan, MD of Al Nahda International (pictured). "The documents had to be 100% correct, and any discrepancy meant that there were no timely funds coming into us." With cheque discounting, Vijayan adds that customers were in the habit of extending credit lines beyond their stipulated terms of credit. This meant that factoring, a trade finance instrument that is widely practiced in the US, Europe and Asia, but that has so far had little application in the Middle East, was an appealing option.

March 26, 2002
To be staged at Mumbai's World Trade Centre (WTC), from September 30 to October 2, the World Free Trade Zones Expo 2002 will bring together free trade zone operators, investors and regulators under one roof.
"The exhibition is of particular importance to those operating or thinking of setting up free trade zones or set up industry in these zones. In the past regional free zones have used individual road shows to generate investments. The World Free Trade Zones Expo 2002 will, for the first time, provide a unique forum in which international operators and investors can come together, in the same place and at the same time, to compare and evaluate the many investment opportunities available", said Abdul Rahman Falaknaz, Chairman, IEC - Dubai.
The World Free Trade Zones Expo 2002 will also be a point where CEO's from India and world over will converge to evaluate these free trade zones to optimize their investment option. The opportunities provided by various zones in terms of finance, tax benefits, skilled manpower, investor - friendly labour laws, export - import duty benefits and hosts of other factors that together form the basic facilities for running a business profitably.

Middle East
India has traditionally pursued a pro-Arab policy regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict in order to counteract Pakistani influence in the region and to secure access to Middle East petroleum resources. In the 1950s and early 1960s, this pro-Arab stance did not help India in establishing good relations with all Arab countries but may have served to keep peace with its own Muslim minority. India concentrated on developing a close relationship with Egypt on the strength of Nehru's ties with Egyptian president Gamel Abdul Nasser. But the New Delhi-Cairo friendship was insufficient to counteract Arab sympathy for Pakistan in its dispute with India. Furthermore, Indian-Egyptian ties came at the expense of cultivating relations with such countries as Saudi Arabia and Jordan and thus limited India's influence in the region. mujahideen and Pakistan by redirecting Indian petroleum purchases to Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf countries. New Delhi, which traditionally had had close relations with Kabul, condemned the Soviet invasion only in the most perfunctory manner and provided diplomatic, economic, and logistic support for the Marxist regime. In the early 1990s, India stepped back from its staunch anti-Israeli stance and support for the Palestinian cause. Besides practical economic and security considerations in the post-Cold War world, domestic politicsespecially those influenced by Hindu nationalistsplayed a role in this reversal. In December 1991, India voted with the UN majority to repeal the UN resolution equating Zionism with racism. In 1992, following the example of the Soviet Union and China, India established diplomatic relations with Israel.

“The big players in the marine and ancillary industry have confirmed their participation and Gulf Craft is obviously one of them. They are participating in VIP and the normal boats segment of the Middle East International Boat Show. I think the response from boat manufacturers from around the world has been good and we are confident the exhibition will measure up to the high expectations of the discerning marine products buyers in the Middle East,” Wahid Attalla, general manager of Dubai World Trade Centre, said.
Dubai World Trade Centre in the UAE and the RAI Group from Amsterdam, co-owners of the exhibition, agreed to implement an exciting new format in 1999.. The main objective behind altering the exhibition format was to maximises its potential from an exhibitor’s point of view and improve attendance by regional visitors. The exhibition will be held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President, Department of Civil Aviation, Government of Dubai and Chairman of Emirates, which is Dubai’s national air carrier.
More than 70 companies from Greece, India, Taiwan, Japan, Canada, Germany, US, UK, Italy, UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Australia and Belgium have confirmed their participation in the boat show. It is expected the final tally would be more than 100 exhibitors participating in the show, which attracts visitors to the boat show come from all over the Middle East.

By Rebecca T. Michael
UPI Correspondent
Washington, DC, Apr. 23 (UPI) The world's two largest democracies India and the U.S. stand to make sizeable financial gains from bolstering economic cooperation, yet neither can agree on what steps must come next. While Washington faults India's slow pace of economic reform for negatively affecting U.S.-India economic relations, New Delhi points to U.S. barriers to trade and technology transfers as the culprit. Both sides agree that the issue deserves attention. "A growing awareness of India's economic and strategic potential has led to serious revaluation in the United States of the India relationship" said Gautam Adhikari, former executive editor of the Times of India, speaking at the American Enterprise Institute this week. Anand Mahindra, President of the Confederation of Indian Industry, also speaking at AEI, noted, "In India, we've been through upheaval...now good economics makes good politics." For some, the direction of future U.S.-India relations seems clear, based on India's strong economic growth. India's economy has grown at an average annual rate of six percent over the past decade, and the current rate is likely to exceed seven and a half percent for the year. A forecast by investment bank Goldman Sachs predicts that India's economy will maintain an average annual growth rate of six percent over the next 50 years, outperforming other major emerging economies like China, Brazil, and Russia.

SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY Pages from the History of India: The British East India Company and Colonization
From Trade to Colonization - Historic Dynamics of the East India Companies
"In the middle of the seventeenth century, Asia still had a far more important place in the world than Europe." So wrote J. Pirenne in his 'History of the Universe', published in Paris in 1950. He added, "The riches of Asia were incomparably greater than those of the European states. Her industrial techniques showed a subtlety and a tradition that the European handicrafts did not possess. And there was nothing in the more modern methods used by the traders of the Western countries that Asian trade had to envy. In matters of credit, transfer of funds, insurance, and cartels, neither India, Persia, nor China had anything to learn from Europe." (Quoted in Auguste Toussaint's 'History of the Indian Ocean') In this period, relations between Indian and Britisher were not lacking in cordiality and the East India Company included employees from both worlds. Friendships between the two nationalities developed not only within the context of business relations, but even beyond, to the point of inter-marriage. Unaffected by the pompous stuffiness of the British gentry, the British employees of the East India Company made the most of life in India - dressing in cool and comfortable Indian garments, enjoying Indian pastimes and absorbing local words in their dialect. With as yet unprejudiced eyes, these British traders delighted in the delicate craftsmanship and attractiveness of Indian manufactures and took good advantage of their growing popularity in Britain and France. So lucrative was the trade that even though India would accept nothing but silver (or gold) in return, the East India Company prospered.
