Momentum for Indian jewellery sector. Indian jewellers are close-mouthed when it comes to talking about their individual turnovers, for fears over security as they develop their businesses ever wider through Africa and the Middle East. But there is no doubt they are doing well. With a share of up to 50% of the world's net exports of precious stones, India accounted for about US$5.2 billion in global trade in 2001, followed by Israel and Belgium (which came in a poor third). India's strength lies in its global predominance across a variety of niche markets and products. Although it imports almost all of its requirements for rough and uncut diamonds - mainly, through the UK's London Trading Company, which controls about 75% of the world's diamond mines - India still manage to come out consistently on top. China, however, is beginning to challenge India's domination in several sectors, albeit from a position of infancy according to SV Sury, secretary of the country's Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council. But Sury believes that there remains adequate scope for both countries to develop, even if current trends were to continue in the global marketplace.

    Non-aligned in the Middle East
What is the precise nature of Indo-Israeli relations, wonders Michael Jansen from New Delhi India is engaged in a delicate balancing act in its relations with the countries of the Middle East, called "West Asia" here. In January Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres paid a high profile visit to India and the United States, during which Washington approved India's purchase of the Israeli airborne Phalcon radar system. New Delhi promptly dispatched a high level delegation to the region to reassure the Arabs that India remains a constant friend and ally. This mission was led by Najma Heputllah, president of the inter-parliamentary council and deputy speaker of India's upper house, a staunch advocate of Indian-Arab cooperation. Since establishing full diplomatic relations with Israel a decade ago, India has combined the expansion of its ties with Israel with attempts to reassure the Arabs that this process is not moving forward at their expense. Although uneasy over India's growing cooperation with Israel in the military sphere, the Arabs remained satisfied that India was firmly committed to its long-standing policy of supporting the Arabs on Palestine and other issues. However, after 11 September India placed itself squarely in the US anti-terrorism camp and hardened its policy line on the Pakistan-backed insurgency in Indian-administered Kashmir. Pronouncements by senior Indian politicians on this issue sound very much like statements issued by their Israeli counterparts on the Palestinian uprising. Some Indian political figures have adopted a bellicose, anti-Muslim tone similar to that of the Israelis.

DECEMBER 01, 2000 INDIA PLAYS BOTH SIDES IN THE MIDDLE EAST
In the past year, India's economic and security ties with Israel have made remarkable strides, while its political relations with Arab countries have drifted. On the other hand, growing oil trade and substantial remittances from Indians living in the Gulf have made India and the Arab states even more economically intertwined. India's growing energy needs make energy trade one of the key elements in its security and economic health. While some BJP-friendly thinkers see India's future in a strategic relationship with Israel and Japan, a more likely Indian approach will involve concurrent efforts to build ties with Israel, Iran and the major Arab countries. Israel: hot new friendship: During the independence movement, Nehru and Gandhi rejected the Zionist claim to Palestine. When the Israeli state became a reality, Nehru viewed Israel as an imperialist creation, and another sectarian state like Pakistan. The BJP and its predecessors in the Hindu nationalist movement saw Israel in a different light, as a fellow struggler against Muslim militancy. But the Nehruvian perspective dominated Indian intellectual circles for decades. More pragmatically, India needed Arab oil. It may also have hoped, however vainly, that pro-Arab policies would earn it some sympathy on the Kashmir issue.
