Don't Touch That Doorknob!
How Germs Can Zap You and How You Can Zap Back , Warner Books, Publisher, publication date, October 1, 2001 was written by me and Edited by Dinah Dunn of Byron Preiss Visual Publications, New York and Jackie Merri Meyer of Warner Books. Available on-line and at bookstores, the book provides information on microorganisms associated with foodborne illness, colds and flu, day care, hospitals, travel, pets, home, work and those that may be used as an agent for biological warfare.
All of the "Feature Articles," and the articles in "What the Heck is...?" and in "General Interest" were written by me, and therefore, any mistakes are mine, alone. I have tried to be as accurate as possible within the limits of providing the information in a "reader-friendly" format. Therefore, please forgive any latitude I have taken with the pure science discussed. With these caveats in mind: in keeping with the spirit of the "Web" and Internet, and the fact that this institution has been established for, and is devoted to, learning, all of the articles on these Pages are for anyone's use, as long as the use is for non-profit only, and this statement accompanies any copies.

http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/GenWeb/Microbiology/General/general.htm
Current Level Previous Level What is microbiology? Microbiology is the study of living organisms too small to be seen with the naked eye - a diverse group of microscopic organisms ranging from viruses and bacteria to protozoa and fungi. Microbes can be useful, such as those that decompose dead plant and animal matter or those that can be harnessed to produce antibiotics or foods like cheese, bread and yogurt. Microbes can also be harmful, such as those that cause disease, spoilage, or contaminate water supplies. Microbes can live in almost any environment, from Antarctica to the very hot, very acidic springs of Yellowstone. Some microbes are key to the cycling of crucial nutrients like carbon and nitrogen in their environment. The study of microbiology is important to a number of fields including medicine, food science, agriculture and biotechnology. General microbiology is a broad field which looks at the basics of microbial structure, physiology, growth and diversity. Microbes come in a range of shapes and sizes as can seen by checking out some of the image links below. Links to some

General Immunology
Host defense is present in many forms. Overall, the Immune Response (IR) can be divided into two major classifications; humoral and cell-mediated. While these responses are not mutually exclusive, they provide distinctly different avenues for dealing with pathogenic organisms or altered host cells. These different responses will be discussed in more detail later. Immune response Humoral Immunity Cell-mediated Immunity (Antibody) (Cytotoxicity) Some of these responses are specific, others are non-specific. This page will introduce host defense mechanisms by defining some commonly used terms and describing the specific cells and tissues involved in these immune responses. DEFINITIONS: Antigen (Ag): A molecule which elicits a specific immune response when introduced into an animal. More specifically, antigenic (immunogenic) substances are:
  • Structurally complex (proteins are usually very antigenic),
  • Accessible (the immune system must be able to contact the molecule), and
  • Foreign (not recognizable as "self"). Antibody (Ab): A glycoprotein produced in response to an antigen that is specific for the antigen and binds to it via non-covalent interactions. The term "immunoglobulin" is aften used interchangeably with "antibody". We will use the term "immunoglobulin" to describe

    General Meeting
ASM's General Meeting is held annually in the late spring and brings together microbiologists from diverse environments. ASM members in 26 topical divisions work together to create a program that is informative and educational in the following broad categories: diagnostic microbiology and epidemiology; pathogenesis and host response mechanisms; general and applied microbiology (including environmental microbiology); and molecular microbiology, physiology, and virology. Workshops in a small-scale hands-on setting are offered immediately preceding the meeting for an additional fee. 2003: May 18-May 22, Washington, DC

Apart from hinting that this book is more expensive than I had expected, there is no negative comment I have for it.It is a well-defined lab manual, which will be useful for both students and investigative scientists. The book covered all aspect of microbiology: including related parasitology topics. It explained various methods used in the identification and classification of all types of microorganisms.
