I definitely recommend this program to any ASU student. It has been a priceless experience for me . . . GPH 484 intern This is a great program and I wish more students at ASU would participate in it, especially if they're considering working with children in any way in the future. The service we provide to the community through this program is only surpassed by what we as interns gain in knowledge and experience . . . PLB 484 intern Service learning is a one of a kind learning experience. . . . It made me a more responsible person. . . . It’s not just good for people who want to be teachers; it’s an enriching experience for everyone participating. We learn leadership and teamwork skills through actual training in a classroom environment. . . . PHS 484 intern Service Learning Program

Some Thoughts on Picking a General Microbiology Textbook

First, the good news—there are many excellent choices. The bell-and-whistle coefficient and the quality of the illustrations varies, but failure to achieve success in the GM classroom can't be blamed on a lack of quality textbooks. The book publishers have developed accurate profiles of the market, and the authors write their books for the "typical" student in their mind's eye. Now, the bad news—no text will be an ideal match for your classroom needs. Given the diversity of institutional curricula and student bodies around the world, every teacher will encounter some incompatibility problems in their class regardless of book choice.

Case Studies in Science
. State University of New York, Buffalo. "Although the case method has been used for years to teach law, business, and medicine, it is not common in science. Yet the use of case studies holds great promise as a pedagogical technique for teaching science, particularly to undergraduates, because it humanizes science and well illustrates scientific methodology and values. It develops students' skills in group learning, speaking, and critical thinking, and since many of the best cases are based on contemporaryand often contentiousscience problems that students encounter in the news (such as human cloning), the use of cases in the classroom makes science relevant."

Postdoctoral Fellow in Bacterial Genetics, University of Michigan. My job duties are to provide leadership for the Department of Animal Sciences in research and education activities dealing with the roles of microorganisms in animal production systems. Although microorganisms are invisible to the naked eye they have a major impact on the production efficiency, economic viability and environmental compatibility of all animal production systems. For these reasons, our Department has a social responsibility to conduct high quality research that provides new, unbiased, and useful information about the microbiology of food animal production systems. My research activities are funded in these areas by competitively-awarded Federal grants, and I will teach microbiology classes in the Departments of Animal Sciences and Microbiology.

I currently co-teach two courses: the General Microbiology Lecture ( ) and Teaching Contemporary Biology (BioG410). The General Microbiology course is a lecture-style course with an enrollment of 150 to 200 students each semester. To help the students to better understand the complex, dynamic (and fascinating!) interactions within the realm of microbiology, we have developed a series of computer-based teaching tools, from stand alone, animated modules that illustrate basic concepts of microbiology, to interactive activities presented on our Web site: http://instruct1.cit.cornell.edu/courses/biomi290/ This interest in developing and using computer-based teaching tools has led me into the realm of educational evaluation. Having developed these tools, we are studying ways to make them more effective. This is not an easy question to ask, and we continue to struggle, along with many others, to develop ways to assess the effectiveness of this new technology. Teaching Contemporary Biology (BioG410) is a unique experiential course that allows a small group of undergraduate students to experience, first-hand, the joys (and challenges!) of teaching. We teach microbiology labs to these undergraduate students, then help them develop teaching plans for a high school biology class. They then spend one week over Winter break in a class room in Rochester, NY, teaching their labs to high school biology students. The Cornell undergraduate students end up learning more about science and themselves than the high school students!

I am a biology instructor at Penn Valley Community College in Kansas City MO where I teach a number of biology courses including non-majors biology, zoology, genetics and ecology. In addition I have almost 15 years experience as a player, coach and tournament director in volleyball. My teaching philosophy is dependent partly on my experiences as a student, teacher and athlete. I guess I could explain my philosophy as: Doing is better than Listening. As part of the Penn Valley team I was a participant in FIRST I which ran from December 1998 to December 1999. Prior to my participation in FIRST, I had used inquiry-based learning piecemeal in my classes. However, I had no real organization to what I was attempting to do, I just knew that what I had been doing for almost 10 years was not working.
After participating in FIRST I, I was more organized in what I did in my classes. Students now spend more time working on projects and discovering information on their own. My interest in the FIRST II project includes increasing my use of inquiry based learning in my classes, seeing how others are using inquiry in their classes, and most importantly looking at developing rubrics and grading inquiry based projects.
