Microbiology for School Teachers Hands on Activities for Students This database represents a collection of laboratory exercises, developed by grantees of the Foundation, which are intended to show school teachers how microorganisms may be used for science teaching in American high schools, middle schools or, in a few instances, elementary schools. Many have been used and field tested over a number of years. All material received from an individual source (school, university, scientific society) is presented in a single directory as one or several files, or in some instances as a link to a website in which the laboratory exercises are described. The Foundation believes that, given the excellence of the scientists and teachers who have cooperated to develop the various exercises presented here, most will prove to be valuable in conveying both basic principles of scientific research and something about the microbial world. Teachers adapting any of these exercises for use as hands-on activities in their classes, if actual microbes are involved, may need reassurance that these are safe for handling by children of the age group they teach and safe for the environment. Links to Other ASM Pages: Faculty/Departments Education Contacts 1997 Undergraduate Microbiology Education Conference Defining Instructional Goals for the Microbiology Laboratory: Content, Process, Skills, and Safety Rod Anderson Ohio Northern University The fourth ASM Undergraduate Microbiology Education Conference was held May 2 to 4 at Broward Community College and Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. One hundred and fifty microbiology educators from 38 U.S. states and territories and 3 other countries actively participated in outlining a core curriculum shared by all introductory microbiology labs (presented in the accompanying article) and developing lab activities that integrated the core concepts. Lab activities will be field tested and revised before being made available on ASM's Web page. In addition, conference participants unanimously agreed that a laboratory be required for every introductory microbiology course. Participants were able to review new teaching materials, books, CDs, and software during a session on "What's New in Microbiology and Teaching Resources" and also discussed posters on the themes of (i) classroom testing of active learning strategies; (ii) creative, investigative, and cooperative lab activities; and (iii) teaching ideas to share.

A Teacher's Eye View of the ASM Microbial Discovery Workshop Joe R. Martinez Joe Martinez and other participants examine pond life I was excited to attend the Microbial Discovery Workshop sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology this past June. The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) sent two teams. Each team consisted of a high school teacher and an ASM-SACNAS scientist. The workshop I attended was held at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi during June 25-29 1997. Most people would cringe at the idea of a workshop in Mississippi during the summer, however the weather was cooperative and we were subjected to southern hospitality at its best. The workshop was presented by Drs. Malcolm McEwan (Delta State) and Ken Anderson (California State University, Los Angeles) and by local high school teachers. Each of the five days was filled with several hands-on activities that were easy to duplicate and very inexpensive. For many of us, budgets are tight and do not allow for the purchase of materials. Each attendee received their own copy of several references (e.g. Bottle Biology, National Science Standards, Microcosmos Activities

TEACHING INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES In 1996, the eight edition of The Biology of Microorganisms went to press. I was asked to prepare the ancillary materials, including the instructors guide, the test item book, and the student study guide. In addition, I prepared an interactive web site to go with the course. In 1999, with the ninth edition, again, I prepared the web site. The Department of Microbiology had an interest in developing its distance education abilities. To meet this objective, I developed our introductory microbiology course (MIPM 302: Introduction to Basic Microbiology) as a totally electronic course. This course, which was taught to 10 students in the Fall of 1996 and 40 students during the spring of 2000, uses the World-Wide Web (WWW). The methodology uses a web-browser presentation that provides students with the lecture materials. Lectures are provided by use of RealAudio® technology. Thus, students at remote locations are able to view the lecture materials as they would in a typical lecture setting while listening to the audio portion of the lecture. The Department of Microbiology, as with most Microbiology graduate programs, recognized a fundamental problem with our graduate students.
