Capped at $110 million, the program provided K-12 teachers with a free personal computer, software and Internet access. Today, MVU is involved in the second phase, providing professional development opportunities to these 90,000 teachers, especially in the areas of computer technology. Beatrice M. Harrison, Michigan Department of Education At a Michigan Department of Education meeting on February 20, 2004, school counselor educators were informed that the school counseling profession is no longer a tenureable profession. This means that individuals can no longer gain tenure in Michigan while serving in a school counseling position. The purpose of this article is to officially and simultaneously inform the membership of the Association of Michigan School Counselors, the Michigan School Counselor Association, and the Michigan Counseling Association. Some History
    What is tenure?
It is important to understand that tenure in Michigan is not awarded by individual school districts or school boards. It is also important to understand that tenure is a legal status specific to teachers in Michigan. As such, tenure is only available to those employed in professions for which a teaching certificate is the only means by which to enter the profession. Tenure is gained by operation of law upon completion of the teaching probation period if the employing school district fails to act to deny tenure. School Counselors and Tenure: The Bad News

Certification Virtually every state or province requires that prospective teachers hold a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree and a teaching certificate. To qualify for the certificate the student must complete a number of state-prescribed professional studies in education.
    STATE OF MICHIGAN
The State of Michigan charges a substantial fee (approximately $125.00) to issue a Provisional certificate. Information on this is provided during directed teaching.
The Teacher Education program at Calvin College matches or exceeds the requirements for a Michigan Provisional certificate. Because Calvin College is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation in Teacher Education, graduates can more easily obtain certification in other states.
However, many states are presently changing their certification requirements. For example, the states marked with an asterisk (*) now require a course in teaching the exceptional child. If you are an elementary teacher and if one of these states is your home state, or if you are quite certain you may teach in one of these states, you should consider taking a course in the exceptional child.
A number of states, such as California, require a master's degree or its equivalent for regular teacher certification. All states require some sort of validation after a teacher completes a college program.
