At Northern Michigan University, we understand this. When we opened our doors in 1899, it was as the region’s teacher certification institution. Throughout our more than 100 years, teaching teachers has remained one of Northern’s most important roles. In fact, education ranks as our top major, and more than 10 percent of our undergraduate student population is enrolled in elementary, secondary, or special education programs. High academic standards, innovative teaching practices, and close relationships with schools and practicing teachers make NMU a strong choice for pursuing a career in education. Do you have what it takes to be a teacher? If you do, there is a classroom of students waiting somewhere for you.

B-1: Bringing Diverse Populations into the Teacher Certification Process
The College of Education at Wayne State University focuses on the preparation of professional educators for urban settings. In 1997 the College won the AACTE award for best practice in the area of supporting diversity in the teaching profession. Preparation programs at the College are field-based and work in close collaboration with the public schools, including the Detroit Public Schools. The theme of the College is "The Urban Educator as a Reflective, Innovative Professional."
    History
The College of Education at Wayne State University has always been committed to recruitment of a diverse population of students. Approximately 25% of the 30,000 students at the University are from minority groups. Within the College of Education, however, small pools of students from minority groups were applying for initial teacher preparation programs. In an attempt to increase the number of certified teachers from minority groups, two major initiatives were developed: articulation agreements with local community colleges; and alternative pathways to teaching programs with the Detroit Public Schools. Located in the center of Detroit, in close proximity to downtown, Wayne State University is commuting distance from the five campuses of the Wayne County Community College District. Henry Ford Community College is located in Dearborn, Michigan, also an easy commute to the campus of WSU. Both community colleges have open admissions policies and serve a non-traditional population with an average age of 27. Both institutions have high numbers of students who are members of minority groups. All three institutions are large and complex.

Reforms in Preservice Preparation Programs and Teacher Certification Standards
Just as states, districts, and educational associations are beginning to rethink professional development strategies to support school improvement, they are also trying to reform preservice preparation programs and teacher certification standards. They have been exploring better ways to prepare new teachers, certify experienced teachers, and provide ongoing professional development to practicing educators. Many organizations-including schools, universities, and national educator groups-have created professional development schools that fit the continuing needs of teachers, from their preservice period to after many years of practice. In addition, educators, professional organizations, private foundations, and others have established a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards that can certify and recognize exceptional, experienced teachers.
    Professional Development Schools
The professional development school framework encourages simultaneous restructuring of K-12 schools and colleges of education. Professional development schools provide clinical settings that prepare novice teachers to succeed in real schools and communities. Like medical students who serve an internship in hospitals, novice teachers learn to apply their coursework to the everyday challenges of actual teaching. The schools also provide ongoing professional development for experienced teachers and university faculty.

TEACHER CERTIFICATION State of Michigan In the state of The state of Michigan charges a substantial fee and requires passing scores on a number of tests to issue a Provisional certificate.  Calvin College also may not recommend anyone for certification to the Michigan Department of Education unless Calvin has proof that, in addition to passing the Basic Skills Test, the appropriate tests in the concentration majors and minors, and for elementary, the Elementary Test have been passed.  However, even if you have no intention of teaching in Michigan , it is to your advantage to get a Michigan provisional certificate before going to another state because another state is more likely to certify you without requiring you to take additional courses once you have been certified in Michigan .  You will receive more information on certification during directed teaching. The Teacher Education Program at Calvin College matches or exceeds the requirements for a Michigan Provisional certificate.  Because Calvin College is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, graduates can more easily obtain certification in other states.
