Superintendent's Cottage / Michigan School for the Deaf
Superintendent's Cottage The Superintendent's Cottage, completed in 1890, is the oldest building on the campus of the Michigan School for the Deaf. With the exception of the masonry work, the cottage was built almost entirely by male students. In addition, students made the furniture for the house in the school's shops. The building reflects the craftsmanship of the boys who studied under instructors Edwin Barton and James Foss. Student labor saved the state money while preparing the boys for future employment. Construction of the cottage began during an 1880s diptheria epidemic when faculty housing was reorganized to make room hospital space. Beginning with Francis Clarke and his family, who lived in the house from 1892 to 1913, every superintendent has resided in the cottage. Michigan School for the Deaf In 1848 the Michigan legislature established the Michigan Asylum for Educating the Deaf and Dumb and the blind. Flint was selected as the site for the new institution. The first student arrived on February 6, 1854. After the School for the Blind opened in Lansing in 1880, the Flint facilty began serving only deaf children. The curriculum, which combined academics and practical training. emphasized "market gardening and general farming." Boys studied carpentry, printing, tailoring and farming, while girls learned the sciences of cooking, sewing, darning and patching. The schools mission was to educate deaf children so that they "may earn a living ... may have culture enough to enjoy that living ... (and) may be fitted for citizenship.

The Community This school is located in a small, rural community in Jackson County, located in southeastern Michigan, about one and one half-hours west of Detroit. It has the sense of a charming, small town. At it's center is a stop sign for a crossroads around which are clustered the major businesses and community institutions- churches, city hall, etc. The community is growing rapidly, however, as part of the overall growth of the metropolitan area making demands on the school system. The School.
Principals: Annette Smith and Pam Barnes
Students: 800 K-5 Ezra Eby Elementary School is part of a small district composed of the middle and high schools. These three schools are located across from one another a 1/4 of a mile from the town's central crossroads. The administration of the school district has new leadership over the last few years. They have been seeking to establish a new sense of accountability in the school system and greater responsiveness to the community. The district's mission statement: "In partnership with our community, the mission of Napoleon Community School, as a leader in education, is to strive for excellence by providing students with quality, equitable and diverse learning experiences, preparing them to become responsible and productive members of a competitive society."

MOUNT PLEASANT - For the first time in school history, the prestigious Reese Trophy has been won by Central Michigan University. Given annually by the Mid-American Conference, the award goes to the school with the best overall performance in men's athletics. "It's a great moment for Central Michigan athletics, its student body, alums and friends," said athletics director Herb Deromedi. "This is a tribute to the coaches and their athletes in all sports for us to achieve an honor of this type. "To win this for the first time is outstanding. All of our men's sports have to count which makes it even more impressive." Each school counts its best six finishes in the 11 sports the MAC sponsors although football, basketball and baseball have to count. Schools can count either indoor or outdoor track but not both. Central Michigan had 61 points followed by Ball State with 59.5 and Miami 59.

The area now known as Bridgman was originally known as Plummer's Pier. In 1856, the Charlotteville Lumber Company renamed the village Charlotteville after one of the owner's wife, Charlotte. The company built a 500 foot pier into Lake Michigan and the sawmill soon prospered into a thriving industry. George C. Bridgman, another co-owner of the Charlotteville Lumber Company, founded another settlement a short distance away. Mr. Bridgman's settlement was near the future railroad station site, which opened in 1870. The two settlements were parceled together and given the name of Laketon. In 1874 the postmaster was successful in renaming the community as Bridgman.
Even though the lumber industry has refrained, Bridgman still plays a vital role in the economy of southwest Michigan. The tourism industry thrives in Bridgman. Warren Dunes and Weko Beach are among the favorite beaches in the region. The two areas also offer hiking and camping. The Cook Energy Information Center is also a choice spot for visitors. The Bridgman community is not only a pleasant location to visit, it is also a nice place to live.
Bridgman's small town pride shows in their neighborhoods and schools. The Bridgman Schools have been rated among the best in the country by Money Magazine.

By Della Bradshaw
There are perhaps two things that really characterise the University of Michigan Business School. The first is that although it is a state university, it operates like - and competes - in the same market as many of the best private business schools in the US. Key Michigan Business School statistics The second is that it is, above all, a school specialising in general management - not finance, not information technology - but general management: from human resources to strategy and organisational behaviour to leadership. In MBA2002, Michigan ranks in 23rd place behind just three other US state universities, the University of California at Berkeley, UCLA in Los Angeles and the Darden School at the University of Virginia. One of the biggest issues facing all business schools in the long term is how to retain their best faculty and attract the best from other schools. However, the problem is particularly acute for state schools where course fees are often maintained at an artificially low level and there is a rigid pay scale, both of which prevent schools from paying competitive salaries.

North Muskegon, situated on the north side of Muskegon Lake in Muskegon County , includes a small peninsula jutting south out into the lake, forming Bear Lake to the north. This is a quiet, scenic residential area, with some businesses located to the northeast in the Four Corners Shopping District. One can get a good view of Muskegon Lake along Ruddiman Ave., which runs by the high school and City Hall. A park is also located on Bear Lake, just a few blocks behind the high school.
North Muskegon was formed because of the lumber boom and originally recorded as Reedsville in 1872, named after first settler Archibald Reed. It was later renamed North Muskegon in 1881, at which time it was incorporated as a village, then as a city in 1891.
