MOLLIE

MOLLIE is the Mobile Learning Lab for Information Education whose purpose is to provide access to technology in underserved areas of the community. The primary use will be in schools, neighborhood centers, and at locations where existing programs lack equipment and technical support. The only requirement is that they are non-profit organizations. Project Ethiopia
Project Ethiopia is a pilot project that provides developing countries training in socially responsible video documentary production. We believe societies all over the world can help themselves by making educational and informative videos in the local dialect pertaining to the local culture. PE is a little over a year old and we look forward to expanding our goals and mission as we learn more. Recently we have joined up Ms. Jean Donohue of the Media Working Group out of Kentucky, USA for a second trip of planning, training and research. See what the Cincinnati Film Commission had to say about PE.

Study Shows Water Flow Management In Michigan
Aiding In Salmon, Trout Recovery
Editor's Note: Ensuring the survival of migratory fish that spawn up stream is an issue of increasing concern. Yesterday (3/16) NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service announced that nine more species of salmon in the Puget Sound watershed would be listed as endangered or threatened. Dam operations, combining with heavy fishing pressure, are making such fish increasingly candidates for listing on threatened or endangered lists. While such listings of endangered salmon runs in the Pacific Northwest have generated a great deal of attention, the issue is also being faced in the Great Lakes region. NOAA Sea Grant research is showing that changes in water flow management and dam water draw operations could provide significant payoffs. River fluctuated dramatically each day - ranging from 10-year floods to drought conditions. The variation was caused by hydropower dam operations known as peak flow management, a practice that permits the periodic release of large amounts of water. Studies have shown that such erratic flows can cause aquatic organisms to alternately become stranded or swept downstream, negatively impacting the fish that rely on them for food. On the Manistee, a major Lake Michigan tributary, relief came in 1989. Peak flow management was abandoned in favor of a less-disruptive practice known as run-of-river flow management. Water was allowed to flow naturally through the Tippy and Hodenpyl dams as a result of terms specified in new hydropower licenses. Today, a decade later, the change is beginning to pay off. Researchers at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, funded in part by NOAA's Michigan Sea Grant Program, have found that survival of young chinook salmon in the Manistee has increased dramatically since the late 1980s in response to a stable water flow.

Michigan Regional Educational Media Center 10 Great Lakes State Gets a Superior Video Bridge Printable version (PDF, 71KB) Recognizing the potential of a statewide videoconference and distance learning service, Tim von Hoff, director of Michigan Regional Education Media Center 10, partnered with Sprint, Marconi and MiCTA to design, build and manage a network that 17 member organizations use up to 40,000 minutes each month.
Starting Out: The Growth of Educational Media
A media resource for over 20 years, REMC10's programs reflect the evolution and importance of educational media to teaching and learning. REMC10 Director Tim von Hoff recalled that when he joined the REMC in 1996, the staff included a driver who delivered videotapes, a purchasing agent, and a person who fulfilled and packed media orders for schools. There was Thumb-area TV, an instructional and educational television service "but no one to operate it," von Hoff said, "so it became one of my responsibilities." "We're in a rural area, so our staff is comparatively small," von Hoff added. However it didn’t take long for the REMC10 to make significant progress:

Childhood Obesity Prevention Agenda for States, Municipalities and School Boards
American children are suffering from an epidemic of obesity. In spite of this, purveyors of junk food increasingly are able to use public schools as a platform for their marketing campaigns. In effect, the junk food lobby has latched onto the compulsory school laws as a way to corral a captive audience of impressionable children. Parents should guide the eating habits of their kids. Corporations have no business wedging into that relationship. Schools should support parents in this. We are what we eat, as the old saying goes; and in this the schools play an important part, for good or ill. Schools should encourage healthful eating habits and exercise. They should not become marketing zones and shopping centers in which junk food manufacturers get open access to impressionable children. WE CALL ON STATE AND LOCAL OFFICIALS TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN BY PROHIBITING THE MARKETING AND SALE OF JUNK FOOD IN SCHOOLS. Schools should help parents promote good nutrition, rather than support junk food companies that promote products high in added sugar and fat.
