Michigan Teacher Network Offers Michigan's Most Comprehensive Listing of Professional Development Events
Michigan Teacher Network (MTN) unveiled its new professional development events database in February 2003. The database is available to Michigan educators throughout the state. This new MTN feature provides:
  • A searchable and browsable database of professional development offerings in which users can quickly find relevant professional development events by searching simple keywords, event titles, or event presenters/sponsors. Users can also browse MTN categories for professional development events within each area (math, science, educational technology, educational leadership, special education, parent events, etc.). An online submission form for school districts, Regional Educational Media Centers (REMCs), libraries, and other Michigan educational and community organizations to post their upcoming professional development events. Advanced professional development search features that allow users to narrow event searches by distance; date and time range; sponsoring organization; grade level; event type (e.g., workshop, regional or statewide conference, seminar, distance learning); audience (e.g., school administrators, teachers, media specialists, technology specialists); event setting (e.g., lab, no lab, interactive video, interactive online); and professional development standards.

The GVSU School of Education offers a variety of graduate programs in support of Educational Technology leading to a Masters of Education (M.Ed.) and/or a K-12 Library Science endorsement for school library media specialists. The program allows students to select from three options: (A) M.Ed. in Computer/Technology services; (B1) M.Ed. in Library/Media Services; (B2) K-12 Library/Media Endorsement. Teachers, Computer coordinators, and media center personnel can benefit from the program through these options. The content of the program includes the educational application of technology, including computers and the Internet, CD/ROM, and other related technologies. Courses concentrate on hardware and software, software evaluation, curricular integration, acquisition and use of instructional materials, managerial use of technology, and media center development and management. The K-12 library science endorsement for school library and media specialists is approved by the Michigan Department of Education. Options D and E require the successful completion of the Michigan Subject Area Test in Library Science (administered by the state) to receive state endorsement. The endorsement in library science is then added to the initial Michigan teacher certificate.
