Grutter v. Michigan By Pete Williams, NBC News correspondent Along with a similar lawsuit over the university's undergraduate program, this legal battle presents the United States Supreme Court with its most important civil rights case in 25 years, challenging the use of racial preferences in school admissions. The challengers claim the programs improperly discriminate on the basis of race. The university responds that it can legally use racial preferences to achieve a diverse student body. The court's decision will determine the future of affirmative action at public and private colleges and universities nationwide. Case: Barbara Grutter v. Lee Bollinger and the University of Michigan Supreme Court #: Argument Date: Tuesday, April 1, 2003 Issue: Does the University of Michigan's affirmative action admissions policy in its law school violate the Constitution by impermissibly considering a minority student's race as a favorable factor? Background: Because of a difference in the facts and the associated legal arguments, the two cases are being treated separately before the court Barbara Grutter, a white Michigan resident, applied for admission to the 1997 first-year class of the University of Michigan law school. At the time she applied, she was 43, having graduated from college 18 years earlier. She applied with a 3.8 GPA and a score on the Law School Aptitude Test of 161, ranking in the 86th percentile of students nationally. But the law school turned her down. In response, she filed a class-action lawsuit against the university in 1997, claiming that she was a victim of reverse discrimination. The trial judge ruled in her favor, finding that the law school's reasons for using race as a factor in admissions, to achieve diversity among the law students, was not a sufficient one to overcome the legal impediments to discriminating on the basis of race.

POLICE ACADEMY INTERNSHIPS
GENERAL INFORMATION
ELIGIBILITY FOR EMPLOYMENT AS A POLICE OFFICER
IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN
Minimum Standards
You must successfully complete a Police Academy in the State of Michigan. Several academies are available in the State and have varying lengths of programs. A minimum program is 440 hours, but most exceed that time. This is a full-time commitment of five days per week and recruits are urged to concentrate solely on the academy by not working or carrying academic courses elsewhere. Rigorous testing takes place and a minimum standard must be maintained as outlined by both the Michigan Council on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and the local academy. Application Alternatives:
  • A law enforcement agency hires you and sponsors you into an academy. The sponsorship means you are an employee of that department, and the department assumes all costs for your attendance. You apply to an academy as a pre-service candidate; and if you successfully pass the MCOLES requirements for pre-employment AND the additional requirements by the local academy, you may be accepted. You pay for this training, which may also include housing costs while you are in the academy. Each academy differs on the cost, dependent upon how long the training is and other varying costs associated with training.
  • After successful completion, your eligibility to be hired by a police agency remains in effect for one year. An extension may be possible, but you would be required to retake the physical and other examinations.

Groups Support University of Michigan Affirmative Action Case
    By DIANA JEAN SCHEMO
    New York Times
WASHINGTON, Feb. 17 — A month after the Bush administration filed a brief with the Supreme Court opposing affirmative action policies at the University of Michigan, more than 300 organizations representing academia, major corporations, labor unions and nearly 30 of the nation's top former military and civilian defense officials, announced that they would file briefs supporting the university by Tuesday's deadline. The friend-of-the-court briefs, expected to top five dozen, may challenge the record of 62 briefs filed during the court's 1978 decision in University of California Board of Regents vs. Bakke. The variety of organizations filing briefs this time reflects the broad reach of affirmative action policies in the quarter century since the Supreme Court's landmark Bakke ruling. Speaking by satellite to hundreds of university presidents gathered at a hotel for the American Council on Education's annual conference here, Mary Sue Coleman, the president of the University of Michigan, defended admissions policies at the university's law school and undergraduate divisions, urging the Supreme Court "not to turn back the clock." "The debate over the landmark 1978 Supreme Court decision," Dr. Coleman said, "is a debate about the future direction of this country."

    Senators Introduce Operation Adopt-A-Family
Focus Will Be On Needs Of Military Families
As the nation begins a war with Iraq, three Michigan senators introduced Operation Adopt-A-Family to provide families of military personnel who have been deployed with information on financial, emotional and spiritual support available in Michigan communities. The senators are Vaide Garcia, Michelle McManus and Laura Toy. "As a member of Michigan's National Guard, my wife and I know first-hand what it is like to receive orders for deployment," Garcia, R-Howell, said. "Operation Adopt-A-Family has been designed to help our military personnel focus on protecting the United States while Michigan focuses on the needs of their families." The operation will provide help for families in three ways, linked together by encouraging local organizations to "adopt" families who may need assistance: Local organizations will be enlisted to help families in their search to alleviate hardships directly resulting from the deployment of their spouses or parents.
