The University of Michigan Geographic Name Server can provide basic information, such as population, latitude and longitude of U.S. cities and many mountains, rivers and other geographic features. Telnet: martini.eecs.umich.edu 3000 No password or user name is needed. Type in the name of a city, a Zip code or a geographic feature and hit enter. The system doesn't like names with abbreviations in them (for example, Mt. McKinley), so spell them out (for example, Mount McKinley). By typing in a town's name or zip code, you can find out a community's county, Zip code and longitude and latitude. Not all geographic features are yet included in the database. Michigan, U.S. Political Geography
Related Category: U.S. Political Geography Michigan u n] Pronunciation Key Economy The Upper Peninsula is northern woods country, with what has been described as "ten months of winter and two months of poor sledding." The abundance of furred animals and forests early attracted fur traders and lumberjacks. Animals were trapped out, virgin forests were stripped, and, in addition, pure copper and high-grade iron ore were rapidly wrested from the earth, so that virtually all of the Upper Peninsula's mines have been closed. Deer, bear, and other game in the forests, as well as abundant fish in streams and lakes, keep the area a rich hunting and fishing ground. Selective cutting and replanting of trees are now employed in the second-growth forests. The Lower Peninsula is less wild, but in parts no less beautiful, than the Upper. Its forests were also cut over in the lumber boom of the late 19th cent., when Michigan was briefly the world leader in lumber production. The soil of these cut-over lands, unlike the productive earth in other areas of the Lower Peninsula, proved generally unsuitable for agriculture, and reforestation has been undertaken. The Lower Peninsula has its own mineral riches, including gypsum, sandstone, limestone, salt, cement, sand, and gravel, but its great wealth lies in the many farms and factories. The surrounding waters temper the climate, providing a long growing season. Fields of grain and corn cover much of the southern counties, and Michigan's noted fruit belt lines the shore of Lake Michigan (the state leads the nation in the production of cherries). Dairying is the most lucrative farm business. Corn is the chief crop, followed by greenhouse products, soybeans, apples, carrots, celery, cucumbers, and other vegetables.

    History
The Grand Rapids area was first settled in the 1820s by missionaries and fur traders, who generally lived in reasonable peace alongside the Ottawa tribespeople who had their settlements near the Grand River. The official founder of Grand Rapids itself was Louis Campau , who arrived in November 1826 to trade with the Indians. Yankee immigrants and others began immigrating from New York and New England in the 1830s. The city of Grand Rapids was officially created on May 1 when the village of Grand Rapids voted to accept the proposed city charter. The population at the time was 2,686.

Linguistic Geography of the Mainland United States
Traditionally, dialectologists have listed three dialect groups in the United States: Northern, Midland, and Southernalthough some scholars prefer a two-way classification of simply Northern and Southern, and one may also find significant difference on the boundaries of each area. The map shown above represents a synthesis of various independent field studies this century. These are in chronological order: the Linguistic Atlas fieldwork begun under the direction of Hans Kurath in the 1930's; the informal but extensive personal observations of Charles Thomas in the 1940's; the DARE fieldwork of the 1960's under Frederic Cassidy; and the Phonological Atlas fieldwork of William Labov during the 1990's.
Although it may seem that a great amount of data has been collected over a short time span, the shifts in American dialects this century have been rapid enough to outpace the data collection. What appears to be a well-entrenched dialect marker today such as the Northern Cities Shift, may barely appear in earlier studiesaffecting both classification and mapping. Nevertheless, some basic observations on current American linguistic geography can be made.

    District of Columbia (geography)
Apart from its role as capital of the US, the District of Columbia , or Washington , can also be described by its own historical, municipal, and physical geographic characteristics, many of which aren't well documented. The term "Washington" is often used for the city including the parts in Maryland and Virginia , while there is still the notion of the District being a distinct entity within that city, as most residents refer to the area simply as " D.C. ". The area is 159 sq. km (98.5 sq. miles).
    History
The district has several distinct historic neighborhoods, which include Georgetown Tenleytown Capitol Hill Anacostia , and Congress Heights . Out of these neighborhoods, Georgetown was originally an incorporated city of the State of Maryland The District of Columbia originally also included land from the State of Virginia , but this land was returned in . This land in Virginia makes up the modern cities of Arlington and the old part of Alexandria, Virginia
