The above map is historically skewed, in that boundaries follow the most modern studies when possible, but where current information is not available the boundaries must often reflect the 1939 LAMSAS data. At certain points the modern and older studies clearly conflict: Schuylkill County with its consistent monophthongization would have been better classified with the Lehigh Valley and Reading in 1939; today, its acceptance of the low back merger shows that it clearly belongs to the Anthracite region.

History Geography of St. Clair County St. Clair County Townships A Brief History of Michigan and St. Clair County
by Tom Kephart French explorers, looking for a passage to China through the unexplored North American continent, visited what is now Michigan in the early 1600s. The native people gave the visitors some much-needed assistance during their journeys, building and navigating canoes, protecting and teaching them about the environment, and helping them forage and hunt for food. The Indians also traded animal furs for guns, powder, ammunition and other tools that moved their culture into the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. In 1679, the French explorer Robert Cavelier de la Salle and French missionary Père Louis Hennepin entered a body of water while sailing on the Griffon up from Lake Erie on what is now the Detroit River. The date was 12 August 1679, which was the day of the religious festival of Sainte-Claire, who founded the order of Franciscan nuns in the 13th century. Ste.-Claire was a contemporary and friend of St. Francis of Assisi. Père (Father) Hennepin held a mass, during which the newly-discovered lake was given the name Lac Sainte-Claire. In time, the river leading north out of Lac Sainte-Claire, the county that developed along it, and a city on the river all took the same name St. Clair. (The name was often spelled St. Clare in English in the 1700s, but most mapmakers had settled on the current spelling by 1840.)

    Setting/Geography

    F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic The Great Gatsby is not set in just one location. From Long Island to Chicago to Detroit, pertinent action takes place all over the United States. These locations in the 1920s, however, were nothing like they are in modern times. If one considers the phenomenal technological breakthroughs that have occurred in modern times, one can begin to appreciate how much the following modern cities have changed from the era that the novel takes place.
    New York City
Years ago, New York City was a small-scale version of the bustling metropolis that it is today. The 1920s was a time of great change and innovation and a town of "roaring music, gaudy entertainment and perpetual prosperity" (Arakian and Smith n.p.).
New York City is composed of five different sub-cities, known as "boroughs." The five boroughs are Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. In The Great Gatsby , Nick, Myrtle, and Tom most likely go to Manhattan on their excursion, as Manhattan is the "original New York" (Climo). Manhattan is the home of skyscrapers, subways, Fifth Avenue, Greenwich Village, theaters, museums, and concert halls. Even in the 1920s, buildings as high as 66 stories stretched to the sky. The subway, originating only a decade earlier, was growing and becoming a staple in NYC transportation. Tom would be particularly attracted to Manhattan because of the fashionable Fifth Avenue and trendy Greenwich Village, both appealing to the wealthy in general.

For what geographic areas does the Census Bureau produce estimates?
The Census Bureau produces population estimates for the Nation, the States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, counties and equivalents, incorporated places, minor civil divisions, consolidated cities, census regions and divisions, and metropolitan areas.
    Census Regions and Divisions
    Counties (and equivalents)
    Minor Civil Divisions
Legally defined county subdivisions are referred to as minor civil divisions (MCDs.) MCDs are the primary divisions of a county. They comprise both governmentally functioning entities that is, those with elected officials who provide services and raise revenues and nonfunctioning entities that exist primarily for administrative purposes, such as election districts. Twenty-eight states and Puerto Rico have MCDs. However, the MCDs function as general purpose governmental units in all or part of only twenty states. Within these twenty states, PEP produces estimates for all governmentally functioning MCDs and for nonfunctioning MCDs in counties that contain at least one functioning MCD. The legal powers and functions of MCDs vary from state to state. Most of the MCDs in twelve states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin) serve as general-purpose local governments. In the remaining eight states for which PEP produces MCD level estimates (Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota) the MCDs, for the most part, perform less of a governmental role and are less well known locally, even though they are active governmental units.
