The Lower Peninsula, shaped like a mitten, is separated from Ontario, Canada, on the east by Lake Erie and Lake Huron, and by the Detroit River and the St. Clair River, which together link these two Great Lakes. It is bordered by Lake Michigan on the west, across which lies Wisconsin. The Upper Peninsula lies northeast of Wisconsin between Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, and is separated from Ontario by the narrow St. Marys River. The Upper Peninsula. known as the U.P. (its residents call themselves Yoopers), is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac; a bridge connecting the two peninsulas was opened in 1957 and has spurred the development of the Upper Peninsula. The eastern portion of the Upper Peninsula has swampy flats and limestone hills on the Lake Michigan shore, while sandstone ridges rise abruptly from the rough waters of Lake Superior; in the west the land rises to forested mountains, still rich in copper and iron. The northern Michigan wilds, numerous inland lakes, and some 3,000 mi (4,800 km) of shoreline, combined with a pleasantly cool summer climate, have long attracted vacationers. In the winter Michigan's snow-covered hills bring skiers from all over the Midwest. Places of interest in the state include Greenfield Village, a re-creation of a 19th-century American village, and the Henry Ford Museum, both at

Introduction Grand Rapids , though sitting well outside of metropolitan area Detroit where the majority of Michigan ’s people reside, is Michigan ’s second city. While Detroit and many of the other industrial cities of Michigan continue to dwindle in population, Grand Rapids and the West Michigan area are booming. Overshadowed by the megalopolitan regions of Detroit and Chicago which bound it at almost equal distances to the east and west, the Grand Rapids region is leading the state into the 21 st Century.
    Geography
Grand Rapids is in Kent County , in the western Lower Peninsula The city lies on both banks of the Grand River Michigan ’s largest river in terms of both length and flow. The central city lies on a series of rapids which give the city its name. The river runs south through most of the city, then turns west to complete the final 40 miles of its journey to Lake Michigan, where it outlets at Grand Haven. Grand Rapids represents the highest navegable point on the river from the lake. Because the river has a large watershed, it is subject to damaging floods

Coin to put Michigan geography in palm of your hand
October 1, 2003 BY CHRIS CHRISTOFF
LANSING BUREAU CHIEF LANSING Michigan's two bits will let the Mitten speak for itself. Gov. Jennifer Granholm will announce today her choice of design for the state's commemorative quarter, which will highlight the state's distinctive shape the Lower and Upper Peninsulas, surrounded by lakes with the words, "Great Lakes State." The dates of statehood 1837-2004 will appear on the coin. And there are no cars on the state's proposed quarter. The 25-cent coin aims to show off Michigan's most distinctive characteristic, its geographical contours, said Granholm spokeswoman Liz Boyd. "No other state makes its home in the heart of one of the largest freshwater reserves in the world," Boyd said. She said the governor was struck by the observation of former NASA astronaut and Michigan native Jerry Linenger, a member of the commission that helped design the quarter, who said that as seen from space, Michigan is the most recognizable region on earth. The 25-member quarter commission was appointed by former Gov. John Engler.

Michigan Curriculum Framework for Geography
APPLICATION NO : R215G30033 APPLICANT : Michigan Department of Education Curriculum Development Program P.O. Box 30008 Lansing, Michigan 48909 CONTACT PERSON : Barbara Atkins TELEPHONE : (517) 373-7248 AWARD TO DATE : $699,917 PROJECT PERIOD : 09/01/93-08/31/96 The Michigan Geography Framework Project has developed content standards in geography as part of the state's core academic curriculum and reform of education in the State of Michigan. The need in Michigan is for a geographic framework which will meet or exceed national standards, be consistent with the Michigan Common Goals of Education, and be useful to teachers involved in school restructuring. The framework must also emphasize the ways geography supports and links with other disciplines and be accompanied by non-threatening ways of assessing learning standards which help teachers improve instruction. The Michigan Department of Education and the Michigan Geographic Alliance will develop and disseminate content standards and related support materials, including materials for parents. The Project will create performance-based assessment mechanisms to help teachers evaluate their instruction. The Michigan Geographic Alliance will provide a 24 day-long teacher workshops, two two-week summer institutes, and six one week summer teacher workshops on the framework. Six model programs will be developed in school districts. Central Michigan University will develop a model program in teacher education based on the framework, run four workshops on teacher preparation, and work with the Department of Education to revise teacher certification standards.
