Detroit's First Asylums and Orphanages
Under a special Act of Legislaters, promoters of Charitable Insitiutions engaged in a movement to become incorporated in 1837 as The Ladies' Protestant Orphan Asylum.
The directors were Mrs. Charles C. Trowbridge, Mrs. Robert Stuart and Mrs. Thomas Palmer , and the Asylum was opened in a building donated, rent free, by Cullen Brown , on Beaubein Street, south of Fort Street.
The Institution, although has relocated several times, has remained in operation, with the exception of a 6 year interval, for over 125 years. It's incorporation under the name of The Protestant Orphan Asylum dates from June 8, 1889. At that time, it's location was at 988 Jefferson Avenue.
St Vincent's Catholic Orphan Asylum was later opened by the Catholic Female Association, who had organized in 1834, for the relief of the sick and poor of Detroit. It's organization almost coincided with the Cholera Epidemic that broke out in the city. The parish priest, Father Kundig , took care of 30 children, who's parents have fallen victim to the disease.

Michigan
In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Michigan Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Michigan, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally over see the contents of the web page. My name is Bryan Taylor and I'm responsible for Monroe county. Please contact me if you would like to contribute to this database. If you would like to host a Michigan county, please contact Jan Cortez Monroe County originally Frenchtown created in 1785, and was founded and renamed Monroe on 14 July 1817. Named after President James Monroe, who paid the Michigan Territory a visit in 1817. At this time Toledo was part of Monroe County, but later lost during what is known as the 1835 Toledo War, where Ohio and Michigan fought over a 500 square mile strip of land that included the mouth of the Maumee River. As an exchange, Michigan got the Upper Peninsula, which then was considered a wilderness. Check out the names indexed for SPAULDING CEMETERY, in Milan, Monroe Co., Michigan. There are 119 people layed to rest in this cemetery only six of them are Spaulding's so it's worth taking a look at. Just click on

"Then, as now, they heard the morning songs of the Whippoorwills among the forests of Sleeping Bear Bay; Loons echoed from the secluded beaches of Port Oneida, to the inland lakes of Otter Creek; and at sunset, the cry of the Bald Eagle filled the North  Manitou skies."
An amazing history of the first pioneer veterans of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Leelanau County, Michigan.
This book tells the story of their experiences in the most deadly and challenging conflict in our Nation's history.  Live through the pre-Civil War years of the first settlements in Leelanau and how this tranquil beauty shaped the men who served their country.  Experience life in the 10th Michigan Cavalry through diary and rare photographs of the men who made its' history.  Follow the Gallant 15th Michigan Infantry into battle and pay respect to the Lakeshore Tigers of the 26th Michigan.  Admire the bravery of the Peshawbestown Indians of the 1st Michigan Sharpshooters and other soldiers from the Grand Traverse Region who served in other Civil War units.  The history of all known veterans who later settled around the Leelanau Peninsula after the Civil War, unfold in a rare virtue that includes activities in the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.).

Native Americans in Michigan
Established in 1996
"People of the Three Fires": There are three major tribal groups in Michigan today: the Chippewa (Ojibwe), the Ottawa, and the Potawatomi. They comprise what is called the Three Fires Council. Although these three tribes have similar cultures and share the same territory, there are still some differences. Ottawa are found in the northern reaches of the Great Lakes; in michigan they occupy the western half of the Lower Peninsula. The Ottawa people were seasonal wanderers of the land and sailors of the Great Lakes gathering wild rice, netting fish, trapping both large and small game, and hunting large game such as moose, deer, and caribou. Ottawa people continue to be great traders and craftsmen. One hallmark of Ottawa life is the birch bark canoe. When the French came, the Ottawa people adapted well to the fur-trading economy and managed to avoid major military entanglements with the European colonial powers competing with each other for North American land and resource dominance. They did, however, fight with the Iroquois throughout the early 1600's.

Not to be sold or published without permission. This work is done in honor of my Mother, Maxine Virginia Reed 29 February 1916 ~ 7 February 1989 She did the very best she knew to do in the face of overwhelming adversity "Soar on the wings of angels my Sweet Mother" All of this work is bits and pieces of data I've collected over the years I've spent being a "pack-rat". I love history and research and was a saver of "tidbits of information" since I was a young child. Years before I ever thought about doing our families history. I will name my sources for all information if I know it. This information is being provided in the hope it will shed some light for others who are having some difficulty in finding their way on the path to their families beginnings. I can neither confirm or document any of this information other than as it's being provided here. I hope I'm able to help you toward that end. Jo Garzelloni
