Abstract The Multicultural Literacy Program (MLP), a three year project funded by FIRST (Fund for the Improvement and Reform of Schools and Teachers) of the U. S. Department of Education, was designed to address the needs of the changing racial and cultural demographics of school districts. The program used a wholistic approach to reading/writing instruction, integrating multicultural literature into the existing reading program to increase reading achievement and engagement. Site-based staff development and parent involvement were important elements of the program. The results of a two year study in two districts, one culturally diverse and the other predominately Anglo, showed that attitudes toward reading, writing, and other cultures were significantly more positive for students using the Multicultural Literature Program than the basal program. In addition, students in the culturally diverse district improved their reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and total reading performance significantly more than comparison students using the basal reading program.

Division of Instruction K-8 LITERACY Rationale Back to Curriculum Index Top of Page Philosophy As educators in the Aurora Public Schools, we believe that..... the learner is the center of the educational experience. all children have a rich and varied potential for learning and must be provided with appropriate educational opportunities to meet their diverse learning needs. ongoing assessment must drive instruction so that instructional methods and sequences are based on the strengths, needs and experiences of the learners. students build knowledge and develop competency over time. This progression in students' competencies is reflected in the APS Communication and Arts and Humanities standards and benchmarks, as well as the APS developmental continuums for reading and writing. To implement these beliefs, we will develop a balanced curriculum which will include: explicit instruction provided within meaningful contexts in:
* the three cueing systems: phonics, syntax and semantics so that students can integrate these skills to create meaning.
* reading comprehension strategies so that students can develop a repertoire of skills and strategies for creating, analyzing and interpreting text.
