Birds are a monophyletic lineage, evolved once from a common ancestor, and all birds are related through that common origin. There are a few kinds of birds that don't fly, but their ancestors did, and these birds have secondarily lost the ability to fly. Modern birds have traits related to hot metabolism, and to flight:
  • horny beak, no teeth large muscular stomach feathers large yolked, hard-shelled eggs. The parent bird provides extensive care of the young until it is grown, or gets some other bird to look after the young. strong skeleton
There are about 30 orders of birds, about 180 families, and about 2,000 genera with 10,000 species. Most of them don't live in Michigan, though there are about 400 species that do. Related web sites: BIRDNET Bird Accounts 2004/05/18 13:28:17.100 GMT-4

Order Cetacea
(whales, dolphins, and porpoises)

editLink('skunkworks/.accounts/200310302130') 2004/05/18 13:28:39.317 GMT-4 By Eric J. Ellis Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Subphylum: Vertebrata Class: Mammalia Order: Cetacea Members of this Order The order Cetacea comprises two extant sub-orders and one extinct sub-order. The extant sub-orders are the Mysticeti (baleen whales) and the Odontoceti (toothed whales). The extinct sub-order is the Archaeoceti (ancient whales). Both the mysticetes and odontocetes are thought to be descendants of the archaeocetes. Cetaceans, along with bats, are considered some of the most derived mammals on the planet. They evolved from terrestrial animals to an entirely aquatic life form that is completely separated from the land in all aspects of biology. Cetaceans live, breed, rest, and carry out all of their life functions in the water. The phylogenetic relationships discussed above are in the currently accepted form but many biologists still classify the Mysticetes and Odontocetes as separate orders. All cetaceans share a number of similarities: they have a fusiform, or streamlined body shape; paddle shaped front limbs; vestigial hind limbs (which are within the body wall); no external digits or claws; tail flattened laterally and bearing horizontal flukes at the tip; vestigial ear pinnae; basically hairless body (some young have hair on their snouts); thick subcutaneous blubber layer filled with fat and oil; telescoped skull bones; external nares (blowhole) on the top of the head; addition of compressed vertebrae; shortening of the neck; lack of sweat glands; internal reproductive organs; 3-chambered stomach; and an airway reinforced with cartilage down to the alveoli. Many of these characteristics are adaptations to reduce drag for fast swimming in an aquatic environment. Protuberances such as external ears or genitals would create turbulence and would be very inefficient for an animal in the water.

Study Finds Senior Exams Are Too Basic

Jun 10 2004 - New York Times (Requires free registration)
A study of America’s high school graduation exams shows they primarily test material taught in the ninth or tenth grades, compared to other industrialized countries that teach similar material at the middle school level. A spokesman for Achieve Inc., a nonprofit group that conducted the study, added the report found that such exams were “not pegged at a very demanding level.” High school exit tests in math and language arts from six states and writing exams from four states were analyzed for the report. The study also compared the material tested with benchmarks from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study.
Study Warns About School Achievement Scores

Apr 13 2004 - The Washington Post
President Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act may prompt some parents to transfer their students from low performing schools to other schools that appear to foster high student achievement, but fail to do an adequate job of raising individual test scores, according to a new study. The report, by the Northwest Evaluation Association, supports the views of several educators that school achievement ratings will improve once all school systems can monitor every student’s improvement on an annual basis. Education Department officials said they would have to review the report before commenting on its worth.

Subsequently, this classification has held up reasonably well, except in Australasia, where there are numerous problems at all taxonomic levels. An examination of the described Australasian gnaphosoids reveals a total of 37 genera and 131 described species. However, such a list is illusionary, obscuring as it does many taxonomic problems. First, whereas in the rest of the world recognition of members of the superfamily is relatively unproblematical, in Australasia this is not yet the case. Some of the Australian taxa currently considered gnaphosoids seem not to belong to the superfamily (the genus Battalus Karsch, for example, is probably a corinnid of the subfamily Castianeirinae, and may be a senior synonym of the relatively well-known Australasian genus Supunna Simon). At the same time, there are Australasian genera placed outside the superfamily that may well be gnaphosoids (for example, the genera Aristerus Simon

Taxa included 5 genera of Cyperaceae, 13 sections of Carex , 24 Orchidaceae genera, and 9 Liliaceae genera. We are working on all three volumes comprising the monocots except Poaceae (old volume 11). Volume 22 consists of 31 "small" families, volume 23 includes Liliales and Orchidales, and volume 24 is Cyperaceae. We encourage regional reviewers to review their manuscripts and forward them to regional coordinators within a month. Regional reviewers with computer capability are encouraged to access their latest manuscripts electronically via the web process explained in 27 February mailing. Authors of treatments, still outstanding, of Monocots except Poaceae should finish their treatments as soon as possible and mail them to their taxon editor Alan Whittemore, FNA staff botanist, began a term of office last fall as an associate editor for Systematic Botany , the research journal of the American Society of Plant Taxonomists. The eight associate editors and the editor-in-chief, David Giannasi of the University of Georgia, divide up the job of reviewing incoming manuscripts and editing them for publication. The editor-in-chief has final responsibility for putting together the issues of the journal.
