Alumni Overview On November 2, 1986, a special constituency meeting of the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventists voted to merge Adelphian Academy and Cedar Lake Academy. This vote set into motion the process that culminated in the establishment of Great Lakes Adventist Academy (GLAA) on the grounds of what was formerly Cedar Lake Academy. The school is centrally located on M-46, three miles east of the village of Edmore. This rural setting encourages the development of an appreciation and love for nature. The spacious grounds and modern buildings provide the students with a comfortable atmosphere in which to live and learn. When GLAA opened its doors for the 1987 - 1988 school year, it did so with a commitment to continue the 179 combined years of service that characterized Adelphian Academy and Cedar Lake Academy. History
Even though GLAA is Michigan's newest boarding academy, in a very real sense it is also the oldest. Our school is dedicated to carry on the traditions begun by Cedar Lake in 1898 and Adelphian in 1904. We present here a historical glimpse of the two schools that provide the foundation upon which we are building.

1900 Census - Colorado Indian Industrial Schools
Ft. Lewis Grand Junction Indian Boarding School at Fort Lewis, 1895
(Photo courtesy of Fort Lewis College Center of Southwest Studies)
The Colorado State Archives volunteer, Connie Ryan, has extracted names from the Fort Lewis and Grand Junction Indian Industrial Schools 1900 Federal Census. These enumerations were slightly different from the usual 1900 Census entries or the Federal Indian Census as there was a special section, "Special Inquiries Relating to Indians." The main section included the headings found on the 1900 Federal Census. In addition, however, this special section listed the tribe of the Indian as well as the tribe of his/her father and mother. There is also a heading entitled "Mixed Blood" which asked if the Indian had any white blood and how much. In the Grand Junction index several additional headings are usually filled out including, "Conjugal Condition," "Citizenship" and "Dwelling" ("Is this Indian living in a fixed or in a movable dwelling?"). The information found in these indexes is especially helpful since the Federal Indian Census before 1930 provided only information on the person's name, date of birth, gender, and relationship to the head of the family. After 1930 the Census provided information on the individual's degree of Indian blood, marital status, ward status, place of residence, and also included miscellaneous commentary. For a further explanation of the Federal Census and the Indian Census from 1885-1944, please see

T he latest stated objective of the GivEm 40 Coalition of Northwest Michigan is to tap into the business sector. And when GivEm 40 targets a community sector for attention, the Healthy Communities • Healthy Youth initiative marshals an impressive cadre of supporters for an in-depth foray. So a turnout of 700 youth and business people for the kickoff event—a September address by the popular HC • HY conference presenter Mark Scharenbroich—was par for the course.
But showing up and listening was only the beginning. Following Scharenbroich’s address, students from the GivEm 40 Youth Council teamed up with local businesspeople for a roundtable discussion: How might the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce support local youth? Proposals under review include supporting youth business entrepreneurs, creating a community service clearinghouse, and sponsoring a youth tent at the National Cherry Festival, which brings half a million visitors to the area each July.

Class action status is being sought in a $25 billion dollar lawsuit filed against the federal government and three Roman Catholic boarding schools. The schools named in the suit include St. Francis Mission school on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, St. Paul's in Marty, the headquarters of the Yankton Sioux Tribe, and Holy Rosary on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, all of which educated Sioux children in South Dakota. The suits were filed by five Sioux who claim they were abused at the schools, and there may be thousands of other students who could join the suit. The plaintiffs allege various forms of abuse by the priests and nuns, including beatings and sexual abuse while attending the boarding schools as a federal program to induce Indians to assimilate into white society.
If you feel you qualify for damages or remedies that might be awarded in this class action please fill out the form below.

Erie School Board says 'no' to sports program and corporal punishment
The Erie School Board Wednesday voted down a proposal to start a sports program at the Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy, approved a ban on corporal punishment in Erie schools and awarded bids for the new East High School. The resolution forbidding corporal punishment "by hand or paddle" in Erie schools passed without comment from the board. It was sponsored by Director Richard Hilinski in response to a "zero tolerance" for aggressive acts by Erie students, a policy he voted against last month. Hilinski wrote in the resolution, "If we believe that physical assault of any sort is unworthy of our students to each other and teachers, then the same should apply to educators in the application of discipline to students." During the citizens' comment portion of the meeting, Erma Lindsey of Holland Street said of the resolution, "If I spank my grandchildren, it's called child abuse. If I can't do it, I suggest you keep your hands off." But Diann Cutri, president of the Erie City Council of PTA, said, "I'm in your schools all the time and I'll tell you that kids don't have any kind of respect for teachers. They need more discipline."

H I S T O R Y Michigan: A History of the Great Lakes State by Bruce A. Rubenstein, Lawrence E. Ziewacz To be sure, this history includes accounts of the French and British, the rise of the automobile industry, and the tales of lumbering and mining. This history also intends to go beyond the well-known aspects of the state's development; it intends to tell the story of the people of Michigan. Special emphasis is given to American Indians and their fight to survive in a "white man's world," the struggle for black rights and women's suffrage, and the contributions of white ethnics. Battle for the Soul: Métis Children Encounter Evangelical Protestants at MacKinaw Mission, 1823-1837 by Keith R. Widder In the 1820s and 1830s, evangelical missionaries encountered the Métis Indians of the upper Great Lakes. Confident in their ability to transform the children, their parents and all others on MacKinaw Island, William and Amanda Ferry opened a boarding school for Métis children. However, Clarence Stephens overcame many racial barriers to become only the ninth African American to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics. In addition to being a superior mathematician, he has also been highly regarded as a pioneer of African Americans in mathematical education, as his methods of teaching are recognized as some of the “most profound in producing mathematics majors (MAD1).” Clarence Francis Stephens was born on July 24, 1917 in Gaffney, South Carolina (SC). He was the fifth of six children, three girls and three boys. His parents were Sam and Jeannette Morehead Stephens (MAA). Sadly his mother died when he was two and his father died when he was eight years old (MAA). All six children went to live with their grandmother who died two years after Stephens’ father. No relative could take in all six children, so the had to live with different relatives. Stephens lived with his great aunt Sarah in Harrisburg, North Carolina (NC), in a three-room house.
