Mexico, History, The Aztec Empire
A century after the collapse of the Toltec civilization, several allied tribes of Nahuatl-speaking people moved into the Valley of Mexico from the north. The principal tribe was known as the Mexica and collectively the tribes came to be known as the Aztecs. The Mexica eventually dominated the other tribes and became the major force in the establishment of the Aztec Empire in central Mexico . The name Mexico is derived from the word Mexica. Aztec civilization, drawing on the cultural advances of the Toltec and other peoples that had lived in the region, reached high levels of artistic, economic, and intellectual development. The Aztec created an empire in the 1400s in the region that is now Mexico. Their capital, Tenochtitlán, stood on the site of present-day Mexico City. The empire was destroyed by the Spaniards in 1521.

a b c teach Cinco de Mayo Mexico Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for the Fifth of May. It is a holiday celebrated on May 5th by Mexicans, and Mexican-Americans. Cinco de Mayo honors the victory of a Mexican army over a French army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The Mexican army, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, won the battle, even though the French force was better armed and much larger. Emperor Napoleon of France had sent troops to Mexico to conquer the country. The Mexicans won at Puebla, but the French later gained control of Mexico City. In 1866 and 1867, France withdrew its troops from Mexico because many Mexicans did not like the French being there. The United States didn't like the French there either. The French pulled out. A Brief History of Mexico
The struggle of the masses in Mexico dates back to the early 16th century when Spanish forces invaded the Yucatan and Mexican coasts.
Henadez de Corboda and Herman Cortes were the Spanish officers in charge of the expedition to conquer the vast Aztec and Mayon civilisations. In 1521, after two years of vicious fighting, Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City) fell to Cortes, and by 1525 Francisco Montejo had conquered the Mayon people. By 1540 most of northern Mexico was under Spanish rule. Years of oppression followed as the Spanish conquerors tried to pacify the indigenous population. For the next three hundred years Mexico was ruled as a Spanish colony. The native population revolted in 1541, but the uprising was crushed. The Spanish rulers proceeded to rob Mexico of all its natural resources, mainly silver, and created vast plantations for the export of wheat, sugar cane, etc. By the 17th century the economy of 'New Spain' collapsed. Disease and overwork cut the native population from 12 million in 1520 to one million by 1720, but it was not until the early l9th century that major threats to Spanish rule began. The first revolt occurred in 1810. It was led by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a parish priest who issued 'Grito de Delores', calling for an end to Spanish rule, redistribution of land, and empowerment of the masses. Costilla and his followers were captured and executed. A following uprising by Jose Maria Moreles y Pavon in 1814 was also crushed, and the disintegrating independence movement turned to guerilla warfare.

http://www.great-adventures.com/destinations/mexico/history.html

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MEXICO
Mexico is a rich tapestry of ancient civilizations, diverse cultures, colonial cities, exquisite landscapes and traditions of dance, folk art and songs. It is a country steeped in history where the past meets the present and every place presents the drama of living archaeology. Long before the arrival of the first Europeans, the peoples of ancient Mexico developed complex civilizations with brilliant achievements in agriculture, architecture, astronomy, mathematics, hieroglyphic writing and military strategy. Over 115,000 registered archaeological sites document a fascinating Pre-Columbian past. The Olmec culture is thought by some to be the mother culture of Mesoamerican civilization. They lived around 1200 to 800 BC on the Gulf coast lowlands of southern Veracruz and Tabasco. They were accomplished stone sculptors who developed a system of numbers and a prototype for the Maya calendar. However, some archaeologists believe that Olmec sites may have been colonial outposts organized for trade between the coastal lowlands and the central highlands where newly discovered artifacts predate the Olmec period by as much as 400 years. The Maya of the Yucatan Peninsula flourished from about 250 BC to 900 AD. They were great architects and builders whose cities boasted magnificent palaces, pyramidal temples and large, paved plazas that sometimes served as a catchment area for collecting water in underground tanks called

History
Mexico Table of Contents The conquistadors unified the populations of the former Mesoamerican kingdoms under the rule of a militaristic and theocratic Spanish monarchy. After early attempts by the conquerors and their descendants to establish a decentralized feudal society, central aristocratic authority prevailed. Throughout the colonial period, a distinctly "Mexican" national identity was emerging among the mestizo and creole inhabitants of New Spain. By the early nineteenth century, Spain's mercantilist trade policies and its discrimination against native-born Mexicans in colonial business and administrative affairs fostered widespread resentment and a desire for greater autonomy. The geopolitical crisis of the Napoleonic wars and the influence of Enlightenment ideas provoked a sudden break with Madrid in 1810. In the aftermath of independence, Mexico suffered a prolonged tumultuous period of factionalism and foreign intervention. Riven by bitter disputes between conservatives and liberals and governed by a series of military strongmen, the country languished in political turmoil while it lost half of its territory to an expanding United States. Stability, when it was finally achieved at the close of the nineteenth century, was imposed by the modernizing but politically repressive regime of José de la Cruz Porfirio Díaz.

History
San Miguel de Allende, nestled in mountainous central region of Mexico, is part of the "Bajio" region of the state of Guanajuato. This "low" region in reality averages about 7000 feet, but is so called for being a relatively flat area ringed by mountains. San Miguel El Grande (as it was originally known) was founded by a Franciscan monk in 1542. It was an important stop over of the silver route from Zacatecas. When the Mexican War of Independence began in the nearby town of Dolores (now know as Dolores Hidalgo) on September 16th, 1810, in an act now celebrated as "El Grito", the rapidly growing revolutionary army came to San Miguel El Grande. Dolores Hidalgo is known as the "Cradle of National Independence" while San Miguel calls itself the "Forge of National Independence", for it was here that General Ignacio Allende joined the army as Padre Miguel Hidalgo's chief lieutenant and led the army to several victories. Allende was not able to enjoy a Mexico independent from Spanish oppression, however, as he was captured during battle and summarily executed. He is now a national hero, and the town renamed itself "San Miguel de Allende" in 1826 to honor his actions. As the mineral wealth waned, San Miguel was popular as both a quiet, beautiful place to live and an attraction for the wealthy for its natural hot springs. The world famous Mexican comic actor, Cantinflas frequented San Miguel in the 50's and 60's, bringing with him an entourage of filmstars, singers and hangers-on.

The first Jews to arrive in Mexico were the Conversos who accompanied the Spaniards in 1521. Conversos were Spanish or Portuguese Jews who publicly converted to Christianity to escape death during the Inquisition while continuing to practice Judaism in secret. Despite persecution, Conversos stayed in Mexico, prospering in commerce and overseas trade. Their main centers of population were in Mexico City, Vera Cruz and Guadalajara. Although the Inquisition was abolished in the 19 th century, persecution of Jews continued. At the beginning of the 20 th century, there was an influx of Ashkenazi Jews from Russia, Poland and Germany while, at the same time, Sephardi Jews arrived from Syria, Turkey, Greece, and Lebanon. These newcomers settled in nearly every part of Mexico, prospering as peddlers and proprietors of stalls in public markets. Anti-Semitism eventually compelled the Jews to relinquish their trade in the open markets in favor of private stores. Today’s Mexican Jewry is well established. Though some anti-Semitism exists in Mexico, in general, little violence is directed at Jews. The major problems for the Mexican Jewish community are inflation and the huge economic disparity between rich and poor. The national health system is severely underfunded, and crime continues to rise. Helping Mexican Jewry provide streamlined and efficient outreach services has been a JDC initiative for nearly 60 years.
