Description This course surveys the history of Mexico from the earliest human inhabitation to the present. It will present different interpretations of the major themes and developments in Mexican history. A goal is to understand Mexico from the perspective of the Mexicans rather than from the point of view of the United States. It is important to understand, however, that Mexico is not a singular homogenous entity; there are “many Mexicos.” In particular, this course will emphasize the creation of Mexican identities, the role which Indigenous peoples have played in that creation, and how that role has changed over time. How have Indians been turned into Mexicans, and how have Mexicans been turned in to Indians? people have visited this page.

Prehistory
Hunter-Gatherer peoples are thought to have inhabited Mexico more than 20,000 years ago. Evidence shows the beginning of farming between 1500 and 900 BC. Between 900 and 300 BC, more complex cultures began to form. From AD 100 to 900 some matured into great civilizations, such as the Olmec, Toltec, Mayan, and Aztec. The Aztecs were the rulers of much of Mexico by about 1200. edit
Pre-Columbian Mexico
Present-day Mexico covers the area where several advanced Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican civilizations like the Maya Olmec Toltec and Aztec cultures developed and flourished for centuries before first contact with Europeans. The modern name "Mexico" comes from either an Aztec god named Mextli or a name for ruling group of the Aztec people, the "Meshika". edit
Spanish Conquest
The native cultures were invaded and conquered by Spain starting in 1519.

Cinco de Mayo means more than parties Peter Ortiz The Arizona Republic May. 5, 2004 12:00 AM Mention the Battle of Puebla in 1862 or Benito Juarez and you're likely to get a blank stare from patrons who will crowd East Valley bars tonight. Celebrating Cinco de Mayo prompts smiles for bar owners who gladly serve up tequila, margaritas and beer to Americans celebrating the Mexican holiday. One Tempe bar is promoting its event as "Cinco De Drinko." But look beyond today's fiestas and you'll discover fascinating stories. Eduardo Hernandez will tell his children why Juarez, a national hero in Mexico, is compared to Abraham Lincoln and how he inspired Mexican peasants to defeat a powerful European army.

And Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday, but it should be. Mexico declared its independence from mother Spain on midnight, the 15th of September, 1810. And it took 11 years before the first Spanish soldiers were told and forced to leave Mexico. So, why Cinco de Mayo? And why should Americans savor this day as well? Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862. The French had landed in Mexico (along with Spanish and English troops) five months earlier on the pretext of collecting Mexican debts from the newly elected government of democratic President (and Indian) Benito Juarez. The English and Spanish quickly made deals and left. The French, however, had different ideas. Under Emperor Napoleon III, who detested the United States, the French came to stay. They brought a Hapsburg prince with them to rule the new Mexican empire. His name was Maximilian; his wife, Carolota. Napoleon's French Army had not been defeated in 50 years, and it invaded Mexico with the finest modern equipment and with a newly reconstituted Foreign Legion. The French were not afraid of anyone, especially since the United States was embroiled in its own Civil War.

History: Mexico’s earliest known civilisation was the Olmec in the second century BC, which reached its peak in about 1200 BC. The Olmec (meaning ‘people from the rubber country’) were a Mayan culture advanced in religion, architecture and mathematical systems. By AD 500, two great cities had emerged, Teotihuacan (with a population of approximately 200,000) and Cholula, a religious centre near Puebla that survived until the Spanish Conquest in 1521. The height of Mayan civilisation was reached between AD 600-900. The Toltecs, whose capital was Tula, were the predominant civilisation of this time. Known for their fine architecture, elegant speech and intellectual pursuits, they were the ancestors of the famous Aztecs who were thriving at the time Columbus arrived in the New World in 1492. In 1519, a Spaniard named Hernan Cortés arrived from Cuba with a crew of 550 sailors and explorers and settled just north of today’s city of Veracruz. By this time, the Aztec Empire controlled vast territories from the Yucatán peninsula to the Pacific, with over 370 individual nations under their authority. Ruling from their capital city, Tenochtitlan, the Aztecs demanded heavy tribute from their subjects, which may have caused some to side with Cortés in his attack on the Aztecs.

Brief History of Juarez
Until the latter half of the 17th Century, no real permanent settlement was built in the area. During this time, the Rio Grande (or Rio Bravo) was often a raging river. In fact, with no bridges to cross, travelers often were forced to wait on one side or the other for months for the waters to subside enough to allow crossing. In 1659, Fray Garcia de San Francisco y Zuniga began constuction of a mission church to serve the Mansos Indians. In 1668, the structure was completed, and the town that we now know as Juarez, with a population of more than a thousand people, began its slow development. This same church still stands today just a few blocks from the City Market in downtown Juarez. In 1680, the Pueblo Indians living in what is now Santa Fe, New Mexico revolted, sending 2,000 Spanish and Indian refugees south toward Paso del Norte. When they arrived in October 1680, they effectively doubled the population of the town. To accomodate the influx of people, three more towns were built along a twelve-mile stretch of the south side of the river. Paso del Norte grew slowly in the 18th and 19th Centuries. The area was mostly a stopover point for north-south and later east-west travelers.

Map of Gavelston Bay. , Madrid, 1809 The donation of Daniel B. Schirmer's Collection on the History of American Imperialism in 1994 marked the beginning of our efforts to expand the Library's nineteenth century Latin American holdings. The Schirmer Collection, dealing with the debate within the United States during and after the Spanish-American War over the appropriate relationship between the English-speaking and Spanish speaking Americas, is an important complement to the John Hay Collection and its resources for the study of American diplomacy at the turn of the twentieth century. And the presence of the Schirmer collection convinced the Library of its special obligation to provide students, faculty, and other researchers with broader and better balanced opportunities for studying the Western Hemisphere in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as well as in the centuries of exploration and colonization.
The Dupee Collection enables Brown to continue meeting this responsibility. With but one exception, the Dupee Collection's more than 340 books, broadsides, pamphlets, and periodicals were published after the Mexican republic secured its independence in 1821. This belief would eventually cause a great deal of suffering for many Mexicans, Native Americans and United States citizens. Following the earlier Texas War of Independence from Mexico, tensions between the two largest independent nations on the North American continent grew as Texas eventually became a U.S. state. Disputes over the border lines sparked military confrontation, helped by the fact that President Polk eagerly sought a war in order to seize large tracts of land from Mexico.
