Pre-Hispanic Mexico: The proven presence of the first human beings in the Valley of Mexico dates from 8000 years BC. They were primitive, strong and agile hunters, wearing loincloths made of animal fur. Their weapons were lances, darts, knives, flints, punches, bone scrappers, sticks and batons. The Central and Southern regions of the current Mexican territory had already been densely populated for many years, due to the agriculture, initiated several milenium before Christ, of some of Mesoamerica own species: corn, punpkin and beans.
Colonial Mexico: The presence of the Spanish conquers in the coasts of Mexico produced a tremendous impact in the natives' mentality. For the Mexican people today, the Conquest does not mean, in itself, the demonstration of racial, nor social, political or military superiority. Rather, for the natives of that time, it meant a confrontation, considered fatal and inevitable, a sign of their fate with the invincible and unavoidable divine will, a part of their religious mysticism.

Access Mazatlan says Mazatlan may be considered newer than other places in Mexico, but they do not consider the ancient origins of the city by the natives who were there before the Spanish conquerers came into Mexico. Even one of the Catholic churches is built on the foundations of an ancient Indian church structure that predated the Catholic church by thousands of years.
Scientists have found petroglyphs on the off shore islands that they believe date back as far as 10,000 years. Though human settlement dates back before the Spanish, many historical records were destroyed by the zealots who considered any other civilization inferior to theirs. Slavery, slaughter, and disease took it's toll on the local Indians which occupied this and other regions of Mexico. So, as history is written by the victors, I am confined to the record which begins with the Spaniards.

Joseph Descans The accident happened on a typical late summer morning at a mainland Mexico beach infamous for its dangerously powerful waves. I was staying in a nearby town with my Christian missionary friend and knee boarder, Jimmy "Jaime" Downs, and taking the first bus to the beach every day where surfboards and helmet awaited my arrival. On this particular morning I passed the remains of the 6' 10" surfboard, which a wave had splintered a few days earlier, as I retrieved my 7'6" from the board room at Edgar's hotel on the beach. The sandbars on which the waves broke were in fairly poor shape. Earlier in the summer they had been battered by waves from several south Pacific swells, and the beach had lost dozens of yards of sand along with over 30 beachfront restaurants. The surf didn't look too special. But remembering how much worse it looked the day before when I got the best tube ride of the whole trip on my first wave, I was eager to get in the water. While every one else waited to see how the wind and wave conditions progressed, I headed for the surf as a sleepy-eyed Floridian wished me luck with a semi-enthusiastic nod of the head.
- advertisement - In time a number of surfers joined me and negotiated the ever-changing rip currents and inconsistent sets to get a few good waves. It was a nominal day, but there was definitely potential to get some spitting tubes—the ultimate surfing experience.

MEXICO: History and textbooks
Our history learning project has two aspects: how do history textbooks depict other countries, and how do they tell the story of their own country? The second is the more explosive, since people often refuse to face up to their own history. Often it is a generational thing. The older generations are pained by more recent viewpoints. When I came to this country in 1937 the western expansion of the US was taught, following the interpretation of Frederick Jackson Turner, as a grand advance of democracy. Affirmative action has balanced this with accounts of the brutal suppression of Indian tribes. Some older Americans are unwilling to face this fact. The case of Mexico is more complicated. In addition to the conflicting interpretations of clericals and anti-clericals, there is the precise question of the Tlatelolco massacre of students on October 2, 1968. This is the subject of a long article in the New York Times (2/7/03) titled "Mexico Digs at Last for Truth About 19698 Massacre". The article says: "For the next thirty years, Mexico's high.school students learned nothing about the event from their official history textbooksnothing that was true, at any rate." In November, 2001,President Fox appointed a special prosecutor to investigate the massacre. Things are changing. Ronald Hilton - 2/9/03

The beginnings
There is evidence of human existence in México since 20,000 years BC. In Tepéxpan to the North of the Valley of México, the remains of a human corpse were found beside those of a mammoth. Using the Carbon 14 test, these remains were dated at approximately 10,000 years BC. Agriculture began to manifest itself from the year 3,000 BC.
The American continent was isolated during many centuries, which explains the originality of its civilisation. Northern México was populated by peoples who lived from hunting and collecting in a desert or semi-desert geographical environment. The South was populated by agricultural societies.
Eventhough in the vast Mesoamerica region (a term used by scholars to designate peoples which occupied the central area of México down to Guatemala and Honduras to the South), many different peoples with their own ethnic and linguistic differences coexisted, they had a cultural homogeneity, for instance they cultivated corn, they have a singular structure of government, they used the 365 day calendar, they built pyramids, they used similar rituals and worshiped the same gods and goddesses of the sky, of nature, of fertility and of war. The same concept of cosmic duality - the beginning and the end - appears in the religion and art of all Mesoamerican cultures. The most evident example of this cosmic duality is the god Quetzalcoatl (or Kukulkán in the Mayan area) which is represented by a feathered serpent (earth and sky).
