Byrd Polar Research Center Quarterly publication first published in 1977 as a vehicle for making available, in English translation, important Soviet, Japanese, and west European research on the polar regions. Over the years, the journal's focus has shifted to the north circumpolar region with emphasis on the Russian Arctic, publishing articles dealing with human as well as physical dimensions of Arctic and Subarctic environments. The new editorial team from Byrd Polar Research Center and the Department of Geography at The Ohio State University are broadening the geographic scope and scientific content of Polar Geography . As the Arctic and Antarctic are integral components of the global climate system, the editors will publish papers with a polar focus that recognize these global interactions and thus will be of interest to a broader audience than just the polar scientific community. The journal offers scientists a venue for publishing longer papers such as might result from distillation of a thesis, or review papers that place in global context results from coordinated (international) research efforts currently underway in both polar regions. While we analize the problems facing this area, we will visit groups and interview people that have started to develop their own solutions to these problems. About Oaxaca
The program is based in the City of Oaxaca, in the southeastern part of Mexico. Oaxaca's city center with its outdoor cafes and its historic buildings offer a glimpse of Mexico's colonial past, while the new settlements spreading up the hillsides and the ongoing protests in the Zocalo, the main plaza, point to some of the more problematic issues facing this area. The program also includes several fieldtrips into the countryside. The state of Oaxaca is in itself a world of many worlds. The state's ecosystems range from deserts and high mountain cloud forests to tropical rainforests and coastal regions, yielding the greatest geographical range and biodiversity in Mexico.

The future of Documents on Mexican Politics
On July 2nd, 2000 Mexico underwent its largest internal transformation since the end of the revolution in 1917-1920. This time however, change was achieved throught peaceful and democratic means, although at no small cost. Since 1994 this page was dedicated to the pursuit of such democratic change. As this transition has been achieved, the focus of this page must change. The papers collected here used to reflect the experiences gained over sixteen long years of personal political work. Their new focus will reflect the effects democratic change, its possible avenues, and its potential outcome. We hope readers will continue to find this forum as useful as in the past. I would like to hear your comments and suggestions about this page. The following is a repository of documents and statistics of relevance to the current political discussion. Many viewpoints are represented in them. Contributions are welcome. You may consult the archive for older articles. Note: this page http://db.uwaterloo.ca/~alopez-o/polind.html.

    Mexico's Culture
    Blending Traditions Near and Far
Ancient Mexico and Central America were home to some of the earliest and most advanced civilizations in the western hemisphere. This region is known historically as Mesoamerica, a term that refers to the geographic area and cultural traditions of the pre-Columbian civilizations of Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Maya civilization flourished in southern Mexico and Central America between AD 250 and 900, a time known as the Classic period. The Maya built large religious centers that included ball courts, homes, and temples, and developed a method of hieroglyphic notation. Chronology among the Maya was determined by an elaborate calendar system. Although highly complex, this calendar was the most accurate known to humans until the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in the 16th century.
    The Root of Mexican Culture
The Toltecs rose to power in the 10th century AD and are the first people in Mesoamerica to leave a relatively complete history. Their capital of Tula, whose ruins are located near the town of Tula de Allende 75 km (47 mi) north of Mexico City, extended its political influence over much of central Mexico. Other groups paid them tribute. The Nahuatl-speaking Toltecs established colonies along their northern frontier, protecting the region against hostile groups and greatly expanding the amount of land given over to agriculture. In the 12th century droughts in the north central region weakened the Toltec hold on the region. Desperate and starving people from the north surged southward, eventually overwhelming the Toltecs and forcing them to abandon Tula. Toltec survivors migrated south to the Valley of Mexico, where they joined with other peoples.
