Abstract
The economic policies implemented in Mexico to confront the December 1994 crisis, even though instrumental in coping with the external deficit caused a strong recession coupled with falling real wages and a worsening in income distribution. These effects of the adjustment strategy stem from its contractionary impact on aggregate demand and supply. The recovery from the crisis was not the consequence of the strategy implemented, but rather of the evolution of the international economy as well as some modifications in the fiscal policy stance. An alternative economic strategy, based on subsidizing domestic production, would stimulate the recovery by promoting utilization of idle productive capacities, and moderate inflationary pressures. Besides that, selective fiscal and monetary policies must be implemented, and a mechanism to control capital flight has to be devised. The future of Documents on Mexican Politics
On July 2nd, 2000 Mexico underwent its largest internal transformation since the end of the revolution in 1917-1920. This time however, change was achieved throught peaceful and democratic means, although at no small cost. Since 1994 this page was dedicated to the pursuit of such democratic change. As this transition has been achieved, the focus of this page must change. The papers collected here used to reflect the experiences gained over sixteen long years of personal political work. Their new focus will reflect the effects democratic change, its possible avenues, and its potential outcome. We hope readers will continue to find this forum as useful as in the past. I would like to hear your comments and suggestions about this page. The following is a repository of documents and statistics of relevance to the current political discussion. Many viewpoints are represented in them. Contributions are welcome. You may consult the archive for older articles. Note: this page http://db.uwaterloo.ca/~alopez-o/polind.html.

El Paso and its sister city, Ciudad Juarez, (located in the Mexican state of Chihuahua) comprise the largest metropolitan area on the border between the United States and Mexico; in fact, the downtown areas of these two cities are within walking distance of each other.
El Paso’s proximity to Mexico furnishes an excellent opportunity for businesses to capitalize on NAFTA, the maquiladora industry, and other prospects in Central and South America, especially when used in conjunction with El Paso’s Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) #68. Encompassing over 2,500 acres in 17 non-contiguous sites, FTZ #68 is the lowest cost and second highest volume general purpose FTZ in the United States.

By Sheridan Prasso
No matter where in the world you live and report, there are multinational corporations, government policies and international treaties that affect you, your community and your readers. The key is finding the information that brings a broader worldview to local business writing, and puts it in a global perspective. It is a mistake to assume that readers in a small city or rural province are not interested in, say, global trade or international agreements. They just need to understand why they care and what, exactly affects them in their daily lives. It is the job of the business writer to tell them, to figure out how to bring these policies, news and information home to the local level and make it understandable to all levels of readers. There are a number of resources and Web sites at your fingertips to help you find a global angle, and this backgrounder is designed to help you find them. While some examples are of Web sites that are available through U.S.-based Internet Service Providers, many of them are available through international search engines as well. Government-related sites may well have counterparts in other countries.
