With bright and breezy dresses, energetic stomps and uplifting melodies, the folkloric dance group, Grupo Folklorico Luna y Sol, whirled its way into a sunny Cinco de Mayo afternoon Wednesday, reminding students what the holiday is really about - the celebration of Mexican culture and its people. "All of the dances are the dances of people," said Itza Sanchez, an anthropology major and instructor of the dance group. "Cinco de Mayo honors the people, the working class." Susan D. Posted Saturday, August 2, 2003 Well OK, last Saturday Calixto, Naco, and Manuel pull up in the driveway in Romeo's pickup with a topper on back and Calixto says, "Disculpeme, Tom, no quiero molestarte." "tenemos un chivo" Well, sure enough there was the goat standing  in the back of the pickup, luckily covered by the topper so my neighbors didn't notice. It seemed a pretty good buy at $60. Calixto and I had enjoyed some birria de borrego at a fiesta after the baptism of Maria Fernandez. Little Maria Fe's grandparents and two aunts had come up from Jalisco for a few weeks to be at the baptism and we had it all - birria de borrego, frijoles y arroz (when's the last time you didn't get that?), and a stupendous tres leches cake (Juan's cousin, the baker from Reynoso, is back living in the area again). Juan was a baker, too, and his cakes usually have peach slices between the layers; but his cousin used bananas and strawberry jam between them. And of course, all the guests got laborious and sentimental

Dwayne Shreve's budget travel guide to Maya ruins and culture in Southern mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador, including links to local bus and air schedules.
http://www.mostlymaya.com/
Mostly Maya; An Exploration of Travel Among the Maya Mostly Maya is dedicated to understanding the culture and archaeology of the Maya. It is also geared to making budget and other travel in the Maya areas and in the ruins in Mesoamerica simpler to arrange. I look for links which are relevant to planning an inexpensive trip via the Internet, but this is best done using the additional advice of a good guide book, such as Lonely Planet or the Rough Guide. I also look for better ways to get to some of the more obscure locations. The site is a hobby and it takes no ads. I note mostly local sources, with a preference for inexpensive hotels, local day trips and other local services. I believe that it is better to deal directly with locally owned businesses where possible, because they are more likely to keep both income and profits within the local economies. I also plug places or services I like while traveling in Maya areas. You will also find pages occasionally add pages for commercial and non-commercial places that I like while traveling, which have no website. See additional information For those of you who were wondering where this website was on the 13th of April, my $18 per year web host forgot that I had renewed last January! There have probably been other times and reasons, but be tolerant. Mostly Maya will be here as long as I am and even longer.

OTHER AMERICAS
Adventures in Mexico: Photography, Language, and Culture.
Welcome to Other Americas - At first glance, it may appear that we offer photography workshops... or that we are an adventure tour company... or that we are an educational program on the language and culture of Mexico. In fact we are all of these things rolled into one unique kind of travel experience. ADVENTURE with us means off-the-road travel to parts of Mexico (and Texas this year) that you could not expect to find or explore on your own. PHOTOGRAPHY means hands-on photography instruction and critiques by internationally recognized photographers, who are also enthusiastic fellow travelers. LANGUAGE is an opportunity to study Spanish and/or Mexican history and culture. All this made even more enjoyable by the comfortable setting of first-rate inns, excellent meals and beautiful environments. From our home-base, the group explores surrounding areas by mini-van or jeep. Schedules for each day are flexible, with a choice of activities and/or unscheduled time for photographers and non-photographers alike. In 1979, I took a group of students to Mexico, made a lot of photographs myself, and just fell in love with the country and its people. MEXICO is such a contrast to our country, so profoundly different in its cultural values; its landscape is so varied, mysterious, and beautiful. There are many parts of Mexico that I know intimately now. Certain towns and villages, certain roads and routes that I have found in my 15 years of poking around.

TEXAS BOUNDARIES

To begin, it will be useful to note the boundaries of Texas that existed under the Spanish and Mexican governments. This map shows the boundaries of Texas from its first establishment in 1690 through 1836. Historically, Texas¹ southern boundary was the Nueces River, which separated it from the province of Nuevo Santander, later renamed Tamaulipas as a state in the Republic of Mexico. To the southwest, Texas was bordered by Coahuila and was joined to Coahuila as a single state, from 1824 to 1836. To the west, New Mexico was Texas' border state.
