A Capsule History The United States is now the only industrialized country in the world that does not use the metric system as its predominant system of measurement. Most Americans think that our involvement with metric measurement is relatively new. In fact, the United States has been increasing its use of metric units for many years, and the pace has accelerated in the past three decades. In the early 1800s, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (the government's surveying and map-making agency) used meter and kilogram standards brought from France. In 1866, Congress authorized the use of the metric system in this country and supplied each state with a set of standard metric weights and measures. In 1875, the United States solidified its commitment to the development of the internationally recognized metric system by becoming one of the original seventeen signatory nations to the Treaty of the Meter.

English / Metric Units of Measurement and Conversion Factors Clearly understanding the units of measurement is very important, but seldom given enough attention because the beginning student is usually hurried along through other topics. Mass is the quantity of matter in the thing you are studying. The metric unit of measurement of mass is the kilogram (kg), which is 1000 grams. The English unit is the slug, which is rarely used. The mass center of an object is where the balance point is. Weight is a force, which arises when a mass is acted on by gravity. The metric unit of weight should technically be the Newton (N), which is the unit of force, but commonly it is the kilogram of mass that is used to measure weight in the metric system because gravity is about the same everywhere on the Earth. The English unit of weight is the pound (lb). Length in the metric system is measured by meters (m), and in the English system by feet (ft). A mile is 5280 feet or 1609 meters (1.6 kilometers). Velocity is how fast something is moving in a certain direction. Remember, direction is key. You can have negative velocity if you are moving in the wrong direction. In the metric system, the unit for velocity is meters per second (m/s). In the English system, it miles per hour (mph).

27. Systems Of Measurement
We will not stress conversion between the systems in this class. All our measurementswill be done using SI units the size of the units of the metric system.
http://www.howe.k12.ok.us/~jimaskew/bmetric.htm
Systems of Measurement Why do we need a measurement system? When experiments are performed there are almost always some observations where questions like "how fast", "how far", or "how much" must be answered. The only way to answer these questions is through measuring. Because of this, numbers in science will always have "units". These units are just as important as the numbers when communicating observations. Never write a number without its units. A "standard" is something that is used as a comparison for measuring. Two things are important for any standard:
  • The standard must be available for everyone to use when checking measurements. This means a standard should be something in nature that is the same all over the earth.
  • The standard must never vary.
The English System of Measurement is commonly used as the day to day system in the United States. Since we are familiar with this system, we know about pounds, feet, and gallons. But what are the standards for these units? Because there are no standards in nature for these units, the rest of the world has moved to another measurement system. It might be alright to use the English System when communicating with others in the United States, but what about communicating with the rest of the world? Scientific discoveries are made all over the world. It is important that observations made in one country can be verified by someone in another country. For this reason, science observations must be measured using standards that are available around the world.

Locate the unit of measure that you want to convert from along the top of the chart. Then look down that column until you reach the row of the unit of measure that you wish to convert to . The number at the intersection of column and row is the conversion multiplier. For example, if you know that an area of land is 8 acres in size and you want to convert that value into square feet, look down the "acre" column until you find "square foot" row, where you will find the value 43,560. Multiply 8 by 43,560 and you will find that 8 acres contain 348,380 square feet. Conversions between English and Metric values are performed in the same way.

Locate the unit of measure that you want to convert from along the top of the chart. Then look down that column until you reach the row of the unit of measure that you wish to convert to . The number at the intersection of column and row is the conversion multiplier. For example, if you know a water depth is 1230 feet and you want to convert that value into fathoms, look down the "foot" column until you find "fathom" row, where you will find the value 1.6667e-1. Multiply 1230 by 1.6667e-1 and you will find that 1230 feet equals 205 fathoms. The table is used in the same way even when the conversions are between English and Metric units of measurement. For example, if you knew a destination was 7 miles away and wanted to know the metric equivalent, look down the "miles" column until you find the "kilometers" row, and you will find the value 1.609,344. Multiplying 7 miles by 1.609,344 gives you 11.235,408 kilometers, the equivalent metric distance.

Unit 1: Introduction to Scientific Methods Lesson 20: Introduction to Measurement Objectives: After completing the lesson, students will be able to:
identify the basic units for measuring length, liquid volume, mass, and temperature using the International System of Units
identify the measurement tools to measure length, liquid volume, mass, and temperature in the International System of Units
identify the prefixes used in the International System of Units, and explain what they mean
convert units of measurement in the International System of Units Key Question: "How do scientists measure objects?" Overview: In this introductory lesson, students are introduced to the Inte rnational System of Units (abbreviated SI), as a process scientists use to measure length, liquid volume, mass, and temperature. It is best left up to the individual teacher how best to explain the International System of Units, and the metric system from which it was derived. It is important that students are exposed to the vocabulary of the metric system, and learn how to calculate conversions between units. It is also a good idea to allow some time for students to practice using rulers, balances, graduated cylinders, and thermometers. Measuring objects they bring to class or themselves is usually an interesting approach. The important goal is exposure: future lessons will provide students with a chance to measure objects in a more interesting context.

Measurements are determined in many different ways depending on the items to be measured and the system used. As such, it is important to have equipment for liquid and dry volume measurers for both U.S. and metric, as well as a variety of scales for accurate measurement by weight.
