World Data Center for Meteorology, Asheville
    Introduction
World Data Center(WDC) for Meteorology, Asheville is one component of a global network of discipline subcenters that facilitate international exchange of scientific data. Originally established during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) of 1957, the World Data Center System now functions under the guidance of the International Council of Scientific Unions ( ICSU The WDC for Meteorology, Asheville is maintained by the U.S. Department of Commerce , National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA ) and is collocated and operated by the National Climatic Data Center ( NCDC In accordance with the principles set forth by ICSU, WDC for Meteorology, Asheville acquires, catalogues, and archives data and makes them available to requesters in the international scientific community. Data are exchanged with counterparts, WDC for Meteorology, Obninsk and WDC for Meteorology, Beijing as necessary to improve access. Special research data sets prepared under international programs such as the IGY, World Climate Program (WCP), Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP), etc., are archived and made available to the research community. All data and special data sets contributed to the WDC are available to scientific investigators without restriction.
    Exchange Policy
WDC for Meteorology, Asheville services requests for WDC holdings either in exchange for contributions or at a cost not to exceed that of processing and shipping. For certain type of requests, limitations in funding, personnel, or facilities may preclude direct or free provision of data or information by WDC. For requests for unusually large amounts of data, for specifically formatted data, for derived products, or for data outside of the WDC System, WDC will normally be required to recover the costs of processing and shipping.

WHY METEOROLOGY? Thousands of career choices are available in our fast-changing society. Why would you choose atmospheric science or applied meteorology? You will find very specific answers in the following pages, but here is a quick look at some of the challenges of our changing atmosphere: Do you have a deep curiosity about the world around you? As a meteorologist, you can satisfy that curiosity by investigating the natural forces that shape our weather and climate. You can look for answers to important questions that our society is asking-how can we save lives, how can we protect our environment? You can use your knowledge to warn others when danger is approaching in the form of tornadoes and

    and Consultative Services
Introduction : The Hong Kong Observatory was established in 1883. Scientific observations and related investigations formed an essential part of the work programme of the Observatory at its inception. Within a few years of operation, the Observatory published reports on such topics as the "Climate of Hong Kong" and the "Laws of Storms in the Eastern Seas". The latter report by Dr. Doberck, the first Director, was one of the earliest treatises on typhoons in the Far East. Responding to the needs of the local community, weather forecasting and warning services were inaugurated in 1884 and these activities have since become the focus of the operations of the Observatory. There is a long tradition of research work aimed at the development of a scientifically sound basis for weather forecasting in Hong Kong. Over the years new innovative technologies such as wireless telegraphy, radiosonde, radar, satellite and computer, were applied by the Observatory for improving its weather forecasting and warning services. In the past few decades, there has been a growing interest in the applications of meteorological information and climatological data for the development of Hong Kong. The Observatory has often been called upon to provide meteorological information and advice for engineering work, such as the siting and design of reservoir catchments, the design and construction of bridges and high-rise buildings and the design of drainage systems. The Observatory now assists and participates in studies on the formulation of design parameters required for a wide range of engineering applications. Special investigations are sometimes organised and carried out by the Observatory itself or in co-operation with other institutions as necessary to meet the requirements of consulting engineers.

Climate Data Records from Environmental Satellites: Interim Report
Where the Weather Meets the Road: A Research Agenda for Improving Road Weather Services
Snow, rain, fog, ice and other inclement weather greatly impair road conditions and contribute to 1.5 million accidents each year. Many parallel advances in transportation and meteorologysuch as in-vehicle communication systems and improved storm tracking could be brought together into new services that help drivers and roadway managers make better decisions in adverse weather. The report recommends that the Federal Highway Administration take the lead in creating a focused, national road weather research program that brings together the transportation and meteorological communities, identifies research priorities, and implements new scientific and technological advances. Understanding Climate Change Feedbacks Characterizes the uncertainty associated with feedbacks in the natural climate system that are important for projecting the evolution of Earth's climate over the next 100 years and defines a research strategy to reduce the uncertainty associated with these feedbacks, particularly for those feedbacks that are likely to be important and for which there appears to be significant potential for scientific progress.
