GUIDE TO FINDING LESSON PLANS:
Internet Resources and print materials
Education and Social Science Library
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The Education and Social Science Library has many materials containing lesson plans, primarily in the form of curriculum guides, in both print and microfiche formats. According to the Facts on File Dictionary of Education , a curriculum guide differs from a lesson plan , in that it includes "one or more aspects of curriculum and instruction, such as philosophy, policies, aims, objectives, subject matter, resources and processes" (p.138), while a lesson plan "includes the instructional objectives and methods for a particular functional unit or period of instruction" (p.271). Many lesson plans are embedded within the curriculum guides. The following is an explanation of several ways to locate lesson plans and other teaching materials on a particular topic in the Education and Social Sciences Library. Please direct all comments or requests for information to Nancy O'Brien.

    1. Studying rainfall
    • Students will work in pairs or teams to read the history of rain measurement handout and create a visual representation that includes reasons for measuring rainfall and tools past and future. This could be a poster, cartoon strip, children's storybook, or educational brochure. Part 2 - Testing the Accuracy of a Rain Gauge
Students will work in cooperative teams to identify and test variables that may affect the accuracy of a rain gauge, including evaporation potential, durability of the materials, materials expansion/contraction potential, uncertainty caused by the cross-section of the opening, and location of installation. Students will share findings of their research with the class in a 'mini-meteorology-convention'. Part 3 - Design and Build a Rain Gauge
Students will work in pairs to design and build a rain gauge based upon the class research in part 2. Rain data will be collected and analyzed over a period of time with opportunities to improve on rain gauge design.

    LIGHTNING IT'S SHOCKING, IT'S FRIGHTENING,
    IT'S LIGHTNING!

    by Karen Byers
GRADE: SUBJECT MATTER: Earth Science: meteorology; physics TIME ALLOTMENT: 4 or 5 one hour lessons OVERVIEW
Opposites attract. That’s lightning! It is an electrical discharge between positive and negative regions of a thunderstorm. It was once only magical, mysterious, and misunderstood. However, we know much more about it today. Yet, for children, it is still magical and mysterious. Students’ will decide what they want to learn about lightning, how to go about finding their answers, and deciding what skills they need to further study some of their questions. Using Newton’s Apple show #1513 LEARNING OBJECTIVES Students will:
    • Build a knowledge of lightning and static electricity through video, hands-on demonstrations, the Internet, the library, and a guest speaker. Define and understand these vocabulary words: static electricity, charge, electrons, negative charge, positive charge, neutral charge, supersonic, conductor, insulator, attract, repel.

      Educator Resource Center
      - The Educator Resource Center at the Goddard Space Flight Center serves educators in the eleven northeastern states (Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont) and the District of Columbia. Located at the Goddard Visitor Center, the Educator Resource Center is a place where educators can come and use NASA resources to develop their aerospace education programs. Here educators research, gather ideas and duplicate audiovisual materials. Materials available at the resource laboratory reflect NASA's research and technology development and relate to such curricula areas as astronomy, Earth science, aeronautics, mathematics, physical science and life science. Teachers in disciplines other than science and mathematics are encouraged to explore ways in which aerospace materials may be incorporated into their classroom lessons.

    Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program
The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program is a multi-laboratory, interagency program that was created in 1989 with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The ARM Program is part of DOE's effort to resolve scientific uncertainties about global climate change with a specific focus on improving the performance of general circulation models (GCMs) used for climate research and prediction. These improved models will help scientists better understand the influences of human activities on the earth's climate.

    3-5 forty-minute class periods
Surfers live for the big waves, and on January 28, 1998 in Waimea Beach, Hawaii many of the best surfers in the world gathered for the chance to surf the largest waves in recorded history. But most of them just watched in awe. What caused the massive waves? How did they know the waves were coming? Why does the north shore of Oahu offer the best surfing waves in the world? Would YOU surf an 80-foot wave!!
Using the Nature episode " Condition Black ," students will view the breathtaking force of the sea. They will understand how surfers study waves in an attempt to tame them. Students will also gain a greater understanding of the different types of waves, how they are created, and whether they can experience them in their local environment. Through an interactive Web site, they will learn about the parts of a wave and how energy is transferred from the wind to the water. Ultimately, the students will generate their own waves during a hands-on experiment, and create a fun video demonstrating how surfers use science to predict when the surf's up. Cowabunga!

    What's the Chance of Rain?
Objectives By the end of this lesson the student will:
    • use and interpret numerical statements which quantify chance
use language of chance in everyday situations.
Extension activity outcomes By the end of this lesson the student will:
    • design and prepare surveys and experiments to answer questions or test conjectures and predictions.
Background There are long-term events that happen year after year and affect the rainfall pattern. The Bureau of Meteorology analyses the past patterns and tries to predict the future patterns. The predictions are presented as probabilities (chances) and published to help people make informed decisions. The three wheels (pie charts) you'll see on the website given in the Resources section below tell you what the chance of rain is during different climatic events. An El Niño climate event is when there is a greater chance of low rainfall and a smaller chance of high rainfall. A La Niña climate event is when there is a greater chance of high rainfall and smaller chance of low rainfall.
